The Misuse Of The Words 'ADVICE' And 'ADVISE'. by ayesco202(m): 1:31pm On Dec 07, 2016
Good day fellow nairalanders. Many a time I come across posts where these words 'advice' and 'advise' are used interchangeably . For instance, someone might want to say 'I need your advice' and we see something like 'I need your advise' which is wrong. 'Please advice me' instead of 'Please advise me'. Now the thing is, the word 'advice' is a noun and does not take 'to' modal auxiliaries such as will, would, may, can etc,. Has/have/had cannot also come before it, eg, my advice for you is this, work hard. NOT My advise for you is this, work hard. Advise is a verb which can admit 'to' and the auxiliary verbs above before it eg, I wish to advise you/I may advise you/I will advise you to... So advice seekers need to take note of these things so that we can as well, advise you. Peace. cool

On to more important issues, OP this is a brilliant write up that would help young graduates mostly and it had me going through all my emails to make sure I wasn't falling afoul of this simple but effective rule.

The trick is to know that N comes before V so does C before S, With C is a noun (N), with S is a verb (V).

Once this is recognized you can go back to basics and ask yourself if you're using the word as a verb or noun.

Good but no paragraphs.

on the contrary,

"There's nothing scarier than using the toilet at
your crush's place and it refuses to flush. You'll
just be staring at your shit like. . . Please go, i'm
begging you in the name of God, just go."

Primary principle of language I believe, is to express and not to impress.

It is a good development however, but let's understand the language and it's dynamism first, which alot do not. smiley

Good write up.I also learned. smiley

In addition to that, words that have "c" and "s" cannot be used interchangebly just as the op explained. The ones with 'c' are noun while the ones with 's' are verb!

e.g:
advice/advise
device/devise
etc
