Thank you buddy; but I heard it's kinda hard to maintain with small change

Funny enough, its very easy to maintain, havevyour installers look at once a year and your good to go. but the initial cost is a bit high.

I wrote this analysis actually a few months ago to answer a question about using solar setup for an hair saloon or so. I have modified to reflect current market scenario. Pls enjoy!##

I will attempt to answer this. I have a business that must have power supply 24/7. This is my 6th year and 10th generator (6 petrol, 4 diesel including two 3.5kva, one 5.5 Lister and the biggest is a 15kva diesel.) About a year ago I installed a 5kva inverter coupled to 4 deep cycle batteries and 1.4kw solar panels. This decision I have not regretted as I will analyse below.
First: The CHEAPEST power source in Nigeria is the National grid (Nepa of Old) BUT this is almost always unreliable for business.
Secondly: A good business centre should run from 8am to 6pm or even 8pm if in a school area, increasing the fuel use by 50%.
Thirdly: For his power need he will have to get a bigger gen set than a 2.8kva!!!! Otherwise the generator will be dead in 3 months carrying that load for 8 hours a day. A 5kva gen is more realistic.
Finally: the worth of anything you purchase is more meaningful is considered over a reasonable lifespan. So my calculations will be based over 3 years of usage since the common deep cycle batteries in Nigeria's lifespan is 3 years .
Now to calculations:
Gen 5kva petrol :130-150,000
Fuel@150/L X15L/dayX300 working days per year X 3 years = 2,025,000
Maintenance cost (oil/servicing/parts)@ 50,000X 3= 150,000
Total = @ 2,325,000
That is 2.3 million to provide NOISY power for 12 hours.
////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now to solar - inverter set up that can last for 24 hours or more of heavy usage.
5kva pure sine wave inverter : 200,000
2 X 60amp charge controllers : 200,000
12X 250w Mono solar panels@ 60k: 720,000
8 X 12v 200amp deep cycle batteries : 840,000
Installation costs/ accessories @ 200,000
Total : 2,160,000
That means for the generator person to enjoy 24/7 power over the first 3 years, he will pay 2.3 million X 2 =4.6million compared to solar setup of @ 2.2million with change.
Since solar panels can last 25 years or more, the cost benefits keep accumulating yearly. The only component that you need to change as efficiency reduces is the batteries.
The ONLY negative of solar - inverter power system is the INITIAL cost of purchase and installation. After that comes the enjoyment!!

is the "initial current draw" the same as the starting torque" ?

torque is turning force, so it's related but not the same.

the high initial current is needed to torque the compressor from it's still starting point.

For a 50 horsepower electric motor, how many kva gen set will you recommend ? Thank you.

wow, a 50hp motor shocked shocked shocked

men, hopefully that motor comes with a datasheet(spec-sheet), that provides the LRA (Locked Rotor Amps) needed for initial torquing.

once you have the LRA, you can multiply that by the voltage and power factor ( 0.8 ) to get the appropriate kva gen capacity needed.

I'll advice you to hold your installer responsible

Where do you stay BTW lemme come see your system and know what might have gone wrong

It should have lasted longer than you stated

the guy must have been duped by a quack engineer whose only aim is to make money.
The setup he described there shouldn't have cost up to a million (depending on the solar array)

What's d inverter type u bought and what's d cost.
Thanks

We install the Schneider Electric SW and XW+. The one you see in the video is made by Rich Electric in Taiwan. It is the 3 kw Invertek Combi 24V with a 70 amp AC charger. I paid $1500 for it. It is up for sale for N420k.

That's impressive, I guess it's down to the installed capacity of the solar batteries which should be directly proportional to the cost of installation.

Well said @frenchwine. The Kva means nothing. Your storage means the most followed by your PV. J'aime beacoup du vin rouge.

This is what I've been willing to read. ..how many hrs does the 2.4KVA runs for, how many bedrooms, and what are the things you power it with. .please reply me sir, as I am planning to install soon....thanks

Because I'm at work during the week days, I have my 3W x2 bulbs, ceiling fan (I'm planning on buying a standing one), laptop, phone and modem plugged in all through the night.

The same applies weekends except it is used for longer hours, say, 15hours because of public supply. The good thing about this is that it charges on both public supply and solar power.

6. Clients abuse.
Some clients strain their batteries and inverter. You can't use an electric pressing iron in a 1.5KVA inverter, it'll damage it. Clients behave very funny and more often than not, they don't own up to the installer.

There is always an engineering solution to everything.

My cousin provides inverter setup in each of the new houses he constructs and the electrical engineer simply wires a fuse/breaker from the battery to the inverter to limit current draw.

So if a client decides for instance to run a 1200watt iron on a 1.5kva inverter, the breaker would simply open up and shut the system down.

You will enjoy it but its more expensive than generator! You are the ignorant here.
For example .... Our 4
batteries cost about ...510.000 naira
Sola panels about 120.000 naira
inverter ....engine .....110.000
controller or something like that i am not sure 30k
The whole shiiit lasted for like 18 months (547 days)before we replaced the batteries
come to think of it,we use 1700 diesel per day for our generator that means 1100x547....601.700 naira

Uncle, 1700 for 547 days will take you closer to 1m.

Secondly, how deeply were you discharging your batteries? Till the low alarm sound S or it switched off?

Also, while the 510k may have been a recurring cost, the costs for the inverter, solar panels, charge controller et al, were not recurring.

Based on your own analysis above( even with an assumption that the batteries were drained to 0%), solar power still works out cheaper.

Your opinion is not true. I currently use solar in my house and it works very well. Infact, I just bought a solar refrigerator last Saturday and believe me. It''s making a whole lot of sense as I now refrigeration of food items and cold drinks. I will be buying solar Iron this week and later the deep freezer. Then, I will call Ikejaelectric to come remove their power from pole if my hse can't be metered.

I will enjoin everyone that can afford it to go for it.

Do you have to place your refrigerator and iron outside in order to catch the sunlight?

Or are these DC equipment?

very low output..

forget heavy industrialization with only solar..

solar is not an option for a nation of 180million....

for small nations of 5million its possible...

but for nigeria its a very bad idea...

one panel for 70000naira..calculate how many you would need..
only the panels is useless..the sun dont shine everytime...you need batteries to store energie too..

costs will explode..solar fridge..solar frying pan..solar iron..

with which money??

I spent roughly 260K NGN on my 2.4KVA solar inverter. It is serving me well. No generator noise, no fuel, no maintenance, nothing.

My heart leaps in joy every time the sun shines. I complain like the people around me because moaning about the weather is a British pastime. But I'm secretly happy.

I'm gonna add two extra batteries and solar cells soon.
Is the solar supplying the aouse directly, or charging the inverter battery

And when did u do it
Thinga arr more xpensive nw

not also including the cost he'd use in servicing it

Even if it's once in three months that's like 6 times within the same period

Well I have a neighbour that has been running solar since Feb 2016 with no issues. He spent almost N1.5M and tries not to overload it.

But I wonder all those solar street light, they don't last more than a few months.

I know one solar shop in Ikeja, there is never light in the shop, I wonder what their selling point is.

The reason why most solar street lights are not working and don't last is as a result of poor installation processes, lack of strict adherence to maintenance when due and substandard or crooked applications or use of substandard accessories and batteries.

also for the shop owner, that may be due to the factors mentioned above, especially when the battery is faulty or tampered, the whole solar system is also tampered or faulty.

the lifespan of a solar system is meant to be 8Years atleast. The Nigerian factors such as corruption, unfriendly govt policies, hostile business climate, as well as the cabals in the Generator Business and oil and gas industry etc has made it abit difficult for the solar industry to grow massively, made it expensive and be accepted fully by the average Nigerian.

But I believe with time and persistent efforts the solar sector will grow and all the challenges being experienced will be a thing of the past. It's another multi-Billion dollar industry waiting to explode in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

Heavy industrialisation will require what is called a solar farm. That's a multi-billion project.

Please be reminded that there are smaller solar farms already running in Nigeria, most of those ones are targeted at rural areas and villages.

It may take time, but as soon as we start manufacturing the solar components, it'll be readily affordable.

you surpose to know that as an solar person...
