Last year, I was playing with my 4Runner (98 model). I discovered I could slid the gear into 'N' position while in motion. I was using it on hold-up, just to avoid applying the brakes.

I tried it along Peter Odili - Alcon link road (you know how sweet that road is if you stay around).

Then one day, I was head towards YKC from Town Hall area, then somewhere around 2nd Creek view gate, I wanted to try the shit again. Mehn, no be small. I can remember the kind of sound I heard, but I know the car made some noise and came to an abrupt halt (speed originally was at about 60-80km/h)/.
I can remember if the engine went off, but I concluded the car had "quenched". When I looked, the lever was on 'R'. My heart skipped. My woman kept asking me what it was.
Luckily, I started the car, it started. I shifted lever to 'D' and the car responded. Nothing has happened to the gear box till date (to the best of my knowledge anyway).
But since that day, I never tried that D to N shift again. It may have some damaging effects if done continually. But for my '98 4Runner, nothing happened.

You can't go from positive to negative without passing through zero. Same way you can't move backward from forward motion without first coming to a halt. Coming from high forward speed motion to reverse motion first take you car to an abrupt stop. You risk somersaulting your car, don't try it. Too dangerous. Its like applying a brake at high speed.

On newer cars there are safety measures that prevent the car from coming to an abrupt stop. The car will only decelerate slowly just like when u shift to neutral.

Just try it with manual cars...

I think most cars have this safety feature that prevents car into going to reverse while going forward above 10mph even when u shift to reverse. Not just new cars, this myth was busted on discovery TV with a very old car as u can see in the video below.

As for manual transmission, it is virtually impossible to shift to reverse while going forward.

tried it once...the gear selector removed, that was on manual car.

A manual car will almost NEVER enter reverse while driving forward above 10mph.

Worst that could happen on a manual doing this is your clutch plate shredding up.

I've tried this in a benz 200 auto. The car just coasted like it was in Neutral & then engaged Reverse gear when the car was almost at a complete stop.

Thumbs up to the design engineers of Mercedes-Benz for integrating such a safety feature into a car that old.

Yes, safety measures ensure the car doesn't come to an abrupt stop (ABS) BUT with auto tranny, you just can go to R from D..... the lever is extremely stiff and would not shift.

Notice that before you shift to D, if you don't depress the brake, your gear lever is going nowhere. same applies if you want to reverse, the importance of this is that while on motion, you must come to a FULL STOP before re-engaging the gear. you can easily switch to N from either of R or D because you are essentially "letting go" of the shaft. think of spinning a wheel with your hand, then you release the wheel (N) from that N you can continue spinning in that same direction but to spin in opposite direction at the full opposite spees, be ready to break something.

so yes, you MUST come to a full HALT before you can go from D to R and vice versa

I tried it with my Acura tl manual transmission...and it damaged my gear box.car didn't engage reverse afterwards

As a curious learner, I tried putting my car in park while in motion, I hrd this crack sound from the gear, I was so scared and I returned it back to drive. Nothing happened to the car sha.

I have also tried that before, I was very scared when I heard that loud cracking sound but nothing happened to the gear box. That was like 4 years ago and the gear box was still working properly until I sold the car back in November.

Yea, I get ur drift. I think some old cars also have this earth feature, I don't know about older Toyota cars though but in the video below the card used are old cars. Fast forward to 3:20. Check engine lights up, battery lights up but car still moving forward.

I have done it mistakenly before.....nothing significant happened to the gear. It's an auto tyranny.
