Swiss Nigerian Defender Manuel Akanji Shining Bright At FC Basel

Nigeria and Switzerland might go head to head for 21 year old defender Manuel Akanji who has broken into the first team set up at Swiss side FC Basel.

A full international for Switzerland at youth level, he is eligible for Nigeria through his father who is a Nigerian, but Nigeria are yet to establish contact with him to switch allegiance to the Super Eagles.

However, if he sustains his progress at FC Basel, a drag over his international future will no doubt take place in the nearest future, as Nigeria are presently trying to lure players with dual nationality to the senior national team.

Akanji scored one of the goals for his side in a seven goal thriller which his side edge 4-3 against Lausanne Sport, a game that also saw him go up against former Super Eagles star Taiye Taiwo.

Since joining FC Basel last season, the young centre back has made ten league appearances for the Swiss giants in addition to playing three more games in the domestic Cup, and a solitary appearance in the Europa League.

Ex Spurs Youth Teamer Oduwa Impresses On Olimpija Debut, Picks Lucky Shirt Number

Former Tottenham youth team prospect Nathan Oduwa has settled down into his new surroundings faster than many expected following his move to Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana.

Oduwa ended his over a decade association with Spurs last week when he inked a three year deal with the Slovenian side, and immediately made an instant impact in his first game.

He made his unofficial debut for the team in their 1-0 win over champions of Kazakhstan Astana, where he set up the winner shortly after coming on as a second half substitute.

Known for his pace, tricks and quick dribbles he is expected to make his official debut when the league resumes in Slovenia, hence he has picked up his favourite shirt number.

The former Nigeria U-23 man will dorn jersey number 11 for the team, a number he is hoping will bring good tidings to help him fufill the potential that once made him one of the most sought after teen prospect in English football.

Chelsea Loanee Omeruo Shines In Clash With Eagles Teammate Onazi

On loan Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo once again proved his mettle for Alanyaspor with another excellent display against Trabzonspor in a Turkish league game which ended 0-0.

Omeruo who has been deployed as defensive midfielder, reverted back to his natural position as a centre defender and was very influential at the back for his team.

He denied Trabzonspor forwards time and space on the ball, and also launched attack from the back for his team. A performance that saw him cover almost every blade of grass around his defence line.

The 23 year old wasn’t the only Nigerian who distinguished himself in the tie, as Eddy Onazi continued his fine form for Trabzonspor with another strong showing in the midfield.

Onazi was by far the busiest midfielder on the pitch, as evident in the statistic that rates the former Lazio man as the player who covered more grounds than any other during the course of the game.

Alampasu Yet To Regain Number One Spot At Third Division Portuguese Side

Super Eagles third choice shot stopper Dele Alampasu is still playing second fiddle to Bruno Pinto at third division Portuguese side Cesarense.

Alampasu is on a season long loan to the club from first division side CD Feirense, but after a fine start with the struggling team he has lost his spot as the first choice shot stopper.

The 20 year old kept goal in 8 games with no clean sheet to his name, and his case was made worst when he arrived Portugal late from a national team assignment with Nigeria, which paved the way for Pinto to keep goal and since then remained as first choice after a clean sheet in his first game between the sticks.

Despite the reported extension of his loan deal, he has fail to wrestle the number one spot from the hands of Pinto, who has kept goal in the four games they have played this year, while Alampasu is yet to play a game this year.

Rohr Warns – We Won’t Pick More Than Three Players Playing In China

Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has warned players of the senior Nigeria national team moving to China, that players based in Europe are going to be considered ahead of them when it comes to selecting of players.

Brown Ideye is close to joining Super Eagles duo of captain John Obi Mikel and Odion Ighalo in China, which will bring to five the number of Nigerian players who have moved to the Far East since January.

Overall there are now seven Nigerian players plying their trade in the big paying Chinese environment, and Rohr has warned that he will consider less players from the league.

” The Chinese League is not as backward as many thought, or it has moved forward from what it use to be. But Europe is still where I feel is best for players as the level is very high”, Rohr told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” We have to consider the players in competitive leagues before looking at the players in less competitive league, maybe three players from China would be ideal for our squad”.

Man City Coach Guardiola “Betrayed” Iheanacho – Nigeria Coach

Kelechi Iheanacho lack of game time at Manchester City is a form of betrayal by manager Pep Guardiola according to coach Manu Garba, the ex-Nigeria U-17 coach who gave him his breakthrough at the 2013 World Youth Championship.

Iheanacho has missed the last seven games of Manchester City. He failed to make the matchday squad on five occasions and was twice left on the bench by Guardiola.

Even the injury to Gabriel Jesus hasn’t worked in his favour as many speculated and Garba believes the 20 year old has not been fairly treated by the manager.

” He (Iheanacho) pulled out of the Nigerian team to the last Olympics in Rio on the orders of Guardiola, who also made the club sign an extension with him. Fast forward June to this day and he can’t get into the team”, Manu told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” It’s normal for him to feel betrayed by the man who made him sacrifice the chance to play at the Olympics with Nigeria. He is a good lad and will definitely prove people wrong in the future”.

If Kelechi had gone to FC Porto, by now he would have become a better player than what he is now.

I just wonder what his handlers keep thinking day in day out.

I hope some one will not say Mbappe's performance is not as a result of blablablabla you all know what I mean.

Iheanacho must leave Man city for a Club than can guarantee him good playing time, if and only if he wants to play for the Super Eagles.

Super Eagles may not need an Iheanacho who keeps warming the bench.
My brother, this Iheanacho issue don taya me.

First of, I think Man city developed him the wrong way. Playing him as a striker was just selfish of the club because one aspect of his game was developed(goal scoring) while others were left hollow.

Watching him take on the world in UAE as a left-footed wing forward was delightful, just like watching Mbappe.

Many city just cashed on his goal scoring prowess and nothing more.

Developing him first on the wings would have pushed Iheanacho's game immensely, gradually he can be converted to a centre forward. That's the way to go. I give kudos to wenger and the coach at Maastrachi for the work they are doing with Iwobi and Nwakali.
I hope Wolfsburg does the same with Oshimhen.

For the sake of his development, I wish to see Oshimhen develop first on the flanks.

Oyibo Wall – Gernot Rohr Receives Good News From Leon Balogun Ahead Of Senegal Friendly

As Super Eagles of Nigeria continue the countdown to their first game in 2017, which is the friendly tie against Teranga Lion of Senegal in March, there is some good news coming from the camp of Mainz 05.

Super Eagles dependable defender Leon Balogun who plays for the German club has grown into one of the leaders of the Nigerian team in recent games, particularly the two World Cup 2018 qualifiers tie which Nigeria has won.

His central defence pairing with William Troost-Ekong earned the duo the nickname “Oyibo Wall”, but since the turn of the year, there has been fears over their continual partnership owing to issues with their clubsides.

While Troost-Ekong has found it hard to get game time at Belgian side Gent since his return to the team after an 18 months loan spell with FK Haugesund of Norway, Balogun has had fitness issues.

Balogun ended the year battling to be fit, but few days ago he returned back to training and is in line for his first game of the year very soon.

His return to full fitness will no doubt gladden the heart of the coach of Super Eagles Gernot Rohr, who views the player as an integral member of his squad ahead of the friendly tie against Senegal in London next month.

Nigerian Contingent In Porto First Team To Swell By Two Owing To Mikel & Chidera Ezeh Performances

Portuguese giants FC Porto will according to information gathered by Owngoalnigeria.com promote two Nigerian players to the first team of the club next season.

Already they have five Nigerians on their books namely Mikel Agu, Fidelis Irhene, Chidera Ezeh, Chidozie Awaziem, Moses and Musa Yahaya but only Awaziem is a first team player.

Awaziem has surprisingly not played a game this season after his breakthrough season last time out but has remain very pivotal to the B team who are campaigning in the second division.

Yahaya is yet to play for either of their teams, while Moses John has so far struggle to pin a spot in the U-19 following his transfer to the club in the summer.

However Irhene and Ezeh who are at Portimonense at loan have shown enough promise and one among them will be given a shot at the first team when pre season resumes ahead of the start of next season.

Mikel Agu is already guaranteed to make the first team rooster for pre season engagements, where his performances might earn him another shot at the first team for the first time since 2014.

UCL – Ranieri Hand Starts To Ndidi, Musa Set To Trouble Sevilla With His Pace

Wilfred Ndidi will make his UEFA Champions League debut against Sevilla in the round of 16 after been named by coach Claudio Ranieri in the starting line up for tonight’s clash at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Ndidi will play in the midfield alongside Marc Albrighton and Danny Drinkwater, as Ranieri prefers him in the defensive midfield role ahead of Daniel Amartey.

The 19 year old is not entirely new to playing in Spain against Spanish opposition, as he starred for his former side Genk against Athletic Bilbao in the group stages of the Europa League this season.

Meanwhile his fellow Nigerian at the club Ahmed Musa will also start for the Foxes, in a three man attack alongside Riyad Mahrez and Jamier Vardy.

Why Panathinaikos Pulled Out Of Deal To Sign Eddy Onazi

Fresh reports emanating from the Greek media indicate that Eddy Onazi did not fail trials at Panathinaikos before he switched to Lazio the following year.

Onazi and ex-Golden Eaglets teammate Sani Emmanuel tried their luck at Panathinaikos in 2010 but the capital outfit passed up the opportunity to sign both players due to the demands of My People FC.

Contra.gr says the Nigerian club demanded €500,000 before agreeing to sell the defensive midfielder to The Greens.

Onazi had tested with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur prior to his trip to Greece but the deal fell through because he was not eligible for a UK work permit.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a possible move to Chinese outfit Henan Jianye this month.

Chinese Super League club Tianjin Teda ended their eight-game losing streak after a 5-1 rout of Japanese J3 League team Ryukyu FC in a warm-up game on Wednesday afternoon.

Before the friendly today, Tianjin Teda had lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach U23s, St. Pauli, Dinamo Bucureşti, Dynamo Kiev, Gyeongnam FC, Busan, Ulsan Hyundai and Gyeongju citizens.
Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel played a key role in Tianjin Teda’s first pre-season win and was named in the starting line-up.

It is all but confirmed that Brown Ideye will link up with the former Chelsea midfielder at Tianjin Teda in the coming days.

owngoalnigeria.com/2017/02/22/man-city-coach-guardiola-betrayed-iheanacho-nigeria-coach/

The headline of this article is too misleading. Coach Manu Garba did not say Guardiola betrayed Iheanacho but it was normal Iheanacho to feel betrayed.

Iheanacho needs to master the lessons. We saw Aguero against Huddersfield and Monaco. He is catching up with the requirements. When Iheanacho get games, we will see how improved he is. As I said, the development comes on the training pitch. Iheanacho is getting that at a high level. He is developing. Benching did not stop Morata from developing.

After this season, Iheanacho can get game time but this period, training everyday under Guardiola is important to Nacho's development, more than game time.

As for FC Porto, they should play Ezeh and Yahaya before making us believe they will play Iheanacho. Iheanacho has gotten more game time at the top flight at City, more rep and recognition than those that went to Porto.

Super Eagles Chief coach, Salisu Yusuf has confirmed that the players playing in the Nigeria Professional Football League still have a place in the senior national team.

He made this statement after two of the Nigerian clubsides booked their place in the round of 32 of the CAF Champions League qualifying stages, where Enugu Rangers held JS Saoura of Algeria to a goaless draw to qualify on the away goal rule after playing a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Algiers while Rivers United smashed AS Real Bamako from Mali 4-0 in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

Having managed teams such as Enyimba FC and El Kanemi Warriors in the NPFL, Salisu pointed out to Soccernet.com.ng that Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr has not abandoned the home based players despite putting more faith in the foreign pros.

“I don’t believe on this idea that the home based players have been abandoned by the Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr. I am of the view that some of the home based players will still play a major part in the team’s World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series,” Salisu told Soccernet.com.ng.

“Rohr has always love to give every players equal opportunity to play in the senior national team regardless of your club status and I am so sure they will be given a look in if they continue to improve their standard.

“Besides, you can observe that even the standard of the Nigerian league has improved, something which has caught the attention of the technical adviser and also myself. Mind you, I am the eyeball of the NPFL and I won’t be happy if we ignore the NPFL stars.”

I kind of like this Salisu guy.

He should be Rohr's successor IMO(that is if we settle down for a local coach again)

The loan deal with Aston Villa was worth 1M with an option to buy if he impressed
It's a pity your guy couldn't muster one single appearance at Aston Villa. grin

Jezz..... The more I dig, the more dirt I find on this guy. Its getting scary grin
No wonder Tim Sherwood is an object of ridicule in the football world these days. He won't be getting a decent gig with shitty transfers like this.

Hehehehe! Add the £ 1m : to the £3.7m pound Liverpool-fc sold him, we have not even added the money Granada and Bordeaux payed ooooooo, then substrate the result from the £3.4 M Liverpool bought him, how much is the profit Liverpool made from his sales? grin grin grin

Bhuuuhahaha! Where is the 50% loss? shocked shocked grin

Do you call that gain or loss? grin

You no sabi anything, ba!? shocked grin

This never ending contention about Ilori not being a waste man.

The discussion has centred on Ilori with Forgiveness essentially thinking he is a quality player and Goldfish80 of the opinion which I support that's he is a player that has very little quality and has failed to prove his quality.

Hehehehe! He has little quality yet he played in the Portuguese Liga, La Liga and Ligue 1.!? shocked grin

Did you even bother to read the article I showed you?

Oh! I see, you stylishly ignored it and pretended as if there was nothing like that. Continue!? grin

Well, you have said it all. It is truly ya opinion. That's all. grin

Forgiveness,

I am impressed by your open-minded approach and willingness to consider all options.

I have mentioned Obagoal but nobody apart from you has really given him consideration. Young player that we are talking about are largely unproven. We can not dismiss older players on account of age and or there is a possible new better kid on the block.

How many of our young promising strikers have achieved what Obagoal has achieved. Martins could be our most consistent striker over the last 10 years everywhere he has gone he has scored goals.

What's his performance level like now? Now as much as we think the Chinese league is a weak one. They will not be spending big chunks of money on dead strikers, they are not stupid. You now have a lot of world class strikers there now.

In this regard I can no longer say the Chinese league na moi moi. Comparatively is the Greek, Turkish, Bosnia, and Nordic leagues better, I doubt this currently.

So what about OBAGOAL don't know if he can still cut it
