Chairman, you need to go collect your money back from your Economics teacher if you think the $ CBN are pumping into the system should be spent on infrastructures.

If spent on infrastructures, who are going to use the infrastructures? International companies wouldn't wanna come to a country where the exchange rate isn't stable. Hence, losing foreign investment.

You're also talking as if $250 million is a lot of money, don't forget this isn't coming out of any individual savings o. How much were the politicians stealing per day during Jonathan Era ? There's a lot of money to buy up all the $ in the market and hence making Naira stable again which is better for the country

onatisi:

250 million dollars for 10 months !!!!!!!!!
I sincerely hope they don't . But on the implications
the pros are,the dollars rate will come.down, imported goods may become cheaper
Cons are it may likely kill the local industries .
And eventually the naira. But why will any sane government pump 250 million dollars a month for 10 months just to keep the naira value?
That money alone if judiciously spent can take Nigeria out of recession by constructing roads, agric projects and etc

The reason why we keep on talking about dollar rate rate is because we are an import based economy. Believe me if Nigeria is producing very well more focus of Nigerians will be on the naira and not dollars

250m X 10 = 2.5billion dollars. The same amount your govt has been begging the world bank to borrow.

Nigerians are not thinking. Where is the money to keep "pumping" coming from? CBN does not print dollars. Where is the money to defend the Naira going to keep coming from? We don't even have enough money to fund the budget.

Abeg no mind these unpatriotic Folks, they don't seem to get it.

Is the real value of the Naira #525+? obviously not!!!

The only reason the slide went this far was a combination of factors

- restlessness in the oil producing states leading to a drastic drop in our major external reserve building engine - oil exports
- slump in oil prices to $30
- multiple leakages in government allowing for massive looting without accountability

Are the above pressures still exerting as much negative play to the system now when compared to when the Naira slide started? This is the question you need to ask yourself before you take the next gamble against the Naira.

And what's the external reserve meant for ?

Why Foreign Exchange Reserves are Important  Vinish Parikh  February 9, 2010 Foreign exchange reserve can be defined as deposits of a foreign currency held by the central bank of a country. Here are some of the reasons why it is important for a country to have good amount of foreign exchange reserves – 1. It increases the confidence in the monetary and exchange rate policies of the government. 2. It enhances the capacity of the central bank of the country to intervene in the foreign exchange market and control any adverse movement and stabilize the foreign exchange rates to provide a more favorable economic environment for the progress of the country. 3. During time of any crisis foreign exchange reserves come to the rescue of any country so as to absorb the distress related to such crisis. 4. It also adds to the comfort of market participants that domestic currency is backed by external assets and hence it also helps the equity markets of the country, because due to strong reserves many people from foreign countries are willing to invest in the country having strong foreign exchange reserves. However holding too much foreign exchange reserves is also not advisable because it involves the opportunity cost of money tied in reserves rather than investing somewhere else which could have earn higher return on the invested amount.

Look back na me you go see, I second you gidigba.

@onatisi; that money is not free money na, the budget implementation should take care of infrastructure as planned. My only concern is if the policy is sustainable.

Sold.at what price?
You still don't get what I am saying
.it seems I cant be a good teacher though. But lets just wait and see. There will be a lot of political fireworks when the effect of this policy sets in.
Let me simplify it. You give me the dollars ,I send it abroad . Now u go to ur bank again to bring more. Notice that I am giving u naira where as the dollars u are giving me is coming from abroad. The most reasonable thing to do is to use the dollars I have and the naira I have to bring in more dollars. Instead of government pumping money into the fx market, they should rather hands off,let the naira find its value ,this will eventually discourage importation and increase exportation. But now they have opened the nations vaults and are throwing the dollars out. Eventually they will.stop.it cant continue for long

I get your point on sustainability, thats the only concern I have too. But trust me, 250m a month won't hurt our economy if the niger delta unrest reduces. Plus, with the current situation do we have figures of what's been stolen daily ? They don steal in naira anymore, we saw what happened in past administration.
