I mostly see terrorist acts in Nigeria almost weekly/monthly on TV. I've learned that it mostly happen in the northern part of Nigeria. I think most of it if not almost is related to Boko Haram. Do you live in the north Nigeria? Is there also terrorist acts and major crimes in central and southern Nigeria? Do you feel safe when you walk outside your house?
Boko Haram is mostly in the Northeast of the country. Terrorism in many parts of Nigeria is negligible to nonexistent. Don't get the wrong impression from the media that all of Nigeria is Boko Haram. Nigeria is incredibly diverse and there are a lot of contrasts in different parts. The largest city, Lagos has never experienced any Boko Haram attacks. On the other hand, Maiduguri in the Northeast has had countless of attacks in the past. In many places in the Northeast affected by Boko Haran, there are curfew impose on people for safety. Other than that, It's safe to go out in most parts

Is atheism legal in Ethiopia?

Share some of your major infrastructural projects. I hear your government is investing massively in infrastructure.

How many TV channels do you have in Ethiopia?

Ethiopia is a secular state, so that means atheism and anyother kind of religion is legal. Most of the top level individuals in the current government are actually atheist, but the majority of the public don't know about it, even if they know there isn't going to be any problems.

Infrastructure projects wise, there are many. The biggest one is our Grand Renaissance Dam. The project is almost 70-80% completed and it is believed that it cost 4-5 billion dollars. Once it's completed, it will be Africa largest dam.
The other is our Bola international airport terminal expansion and the building of huge hotel nearby it(it's 50-60% completed(the hotel)).
There is also a serious plan to build a huge airport in the outskirt of Addis Ababa in the next decade. If completed, it will be one of the largest airport in the world. There are also other infrastructure projects(roads, schools, hospitals, dam and so on.....) currently underway. Our light railway transport in Addis was completed 2 years ago.

In terms of our TV channels, it is better to not talk about it much, because we only have 5-10 channels. And even those channels will not give that much entertainments. Some people have a foreign dish called Arab site(there are some Ethiopia channels in them, western movies and musics, but most of it's Arab). There are also very few that have DSTV(me for example).

If I ask, Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa. What is the wealth distribution looks like? Can cities like Abuja and Lagos be comparable with western cities?

Hi, Tnx for asking. The Ethiopian Jews are called Beta Israel. Most of them(about 125000) are found in Israel and very few can be found in northern Ethiopia and USA. There is controversy if most of them are the original Jews or just converted to Judaism. But it is a fact that all the Ethiopian Jews have Cushitic and other Afroasiatic linkage.

There are different theories for there origins. Some Beta Israel believe that they came to Ethiopia by the people who companion menelik I(king Solomon and Queen of Sheba child) from Jerusalem to Ethiopia, while others believe that they came from Egypt from the tribe of Dan during their exile in Egypt. There are also many other theories, so it's very complicated.

In the 10th century, a Queen called Yudith brought much distraction to the Christian kingdom of Axum. Some say she was Beta Israel(most agreed), while others say she only formed alliance with the Beta Israel. Throughout the 2nd millennium, there were continues war between Beta Israel and the Abyssinia(Ethiopia) empire. There was time when there kingdom was large, but now their(those who are in Ethiopia) area is very small.

There were many operations to transfer the Beta Israel to Israel, but the most famous ones were operation Moses(1984-85) and operation Solomon(1991).

The ones who are in Israel speak Hebrew and their culture is mostly related to the Jews, but they also speak Amharic and Tigragn and follow Ethiopia(northern) cultural, especially the first generation(most of them were born and raised in Ethiopia). The Ethiopian Jews in USA are mostly westernized.

The ones who are in Ethiopia, they speak Amharic and Tigragn and their culture has Jewishness in it but generally it’s similar with the Amhara and Tigrean.

I'm Ethiopian, but I will not be biased. Yes, there are beautiful girls/women, but it's not like it's exaggerated by some. Most people who say they are beautiful is because they have European features in them. Those people mind is westernized and when ever they see them they will relate to them and will say most Ethiopians are beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and for me there are some unattractive. Those unattractive ones may also be attractive to others. So all the things you heard about Ethiopia women is exaggerated. I definitely think that all African women are beautiful in their own regard.

If I may ask you a question, from where country are you from? If there are multiethnic groups in your country, from where ethnic group are you from and also what is your mother tongue language? Tnx!

I am a Nigerian, from the southern part also known as the Niger Delta, and Ijaw by ethnicity(the 4th largest tribe in Nigeria with 10% of Nigeria), we(Ijaws/izon apu) are maritime people and live by fishing, supplemented with farming and are blessed with crude oil processed for export, we are primarily Christians but also have elaborate traditional religious practices of our own. Veneration of ancestors plays a central role in Ijaw traditional religion, while water spirits, known as Owuamapu features mostly in the Ijaw pantheon

Some popular Ijaw people

Former President Goodluck Jonathan
Agbani Daerego(Miss World 2001, first black African to win the title)
Rex Lawson, Timi Dakolo, Timaya, Mr 2kay, Harry song( musicians)
Asari Dokubo(Freedom Fighter)
Ben Murray Bruce( Politician & founder silverbird )
Atedo Peterside(founder Ibtc)

Food

Like many ethnic groups in Nigeria, the Ijaws have many local foods that are not widespread in Nigeria. Some of them are:

1. Polofiyai: A very rich soup made with yams and palm oil.

2. Kekefiyai: A pottage made with chopped unripened (green) plantains, fish, beef and palm oil

4. Fried or roasted fish and plantain: Fish fried in palm oil and served with fried plantains.

4. Gbe: The grub of the raffia-palm tree beetle that is eaten raw, dried, fried in groundnut oil or pickled in palm oil.

5. Kalabari “sea-harvest” fulo: A rich mixed seafood soup or stew that is eaten with fufu, rice or yam.

Language

Ijaws speak 9 Niger-Congo languages originating from the Ijoid branch of the Niger-Congo tree. Approximately 1 million people speak Izon which belongs to the Eastern Ijo division of the language. The second most prominent sub-language, Kalabari belongs to the Western Ijo division and is the mother tongue of 500,000 speakers.

Hello mr hati do you speak Oromo language and have you heard any theory about some Nigerian languages being of Oromo descent such as Yoruba or Igala language.
Do Ethiopians also practice Rastafarianisms because we have few that practice it here with huge dreadlocks.
Have you heard of Arnold ford who is a black Rabbi and stayed in Ethiopia to install Haille Selassie is of Yoruba descent.

Hi Pearlyakin, I don't speak Oromia. I'm an Amhara ethnic, I only speak Amharic. I haven't heard any specific Nigerian languages being descendent from Ethiopia here(may be it's just me). All the languages here belong to Afro-Asiatic(Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic) and Nilo-Saharan(on Sudan border) super families. The Nigerian languages belong to Niger-Congo super-family, so I don't think they came from here, but it may be possible they originated from here since there are some evidences to support it.

There are very few who practice it here. Most of them are found in a town called Shashamane in the Oromo region(240 km south of Addis Ababa). Even in the town they are very few. In 1948, Emperor Haile Selassie I gave 500 acres of his private land for members of the(Rasata Jamaicans, other Jamaicans, other Caribbeans and others). So most of the Rastas are Ethio-Jamaicans-Caribbeans mix in Shashamane and other parts of Ethiopia.

I haven't heard about Arnold Ford. I will read about him, since you have bring him(I hope it will be interesting).

tonal, and is the Niger-Congo language with the largest number of native speakers.

Yoruba people are a large ethno-linguistic group or ethnic nation in Africa, and the majority of them speak the Yoruba language. The Yoruba constitute approximately 35 percent of Nigeria’s total population, and around 40 million individuals throughout the region of West Africa.

While the majority of the Yoruba live in western Nigeria, there are also substantial indigenous Yoruba communities in Benin, Ghana, Togo and the Caribbean.

A significant percentage of Africans enslaved during the TransAtlantic Slave Trade in the Americas managed to maintain the Yoruba spiritual religion known as Aborisha.

Indeed, the initiation and practice of Aborisha spiritual religion offers a route to all people of African descent, who were victims of slave trade in the Americas or the Caribbean, to make claim to Yoruba heritage.

The Yorubas are the main ethnic group in the states of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo, which are subdivisions of Nigeria; they also constitute a sizable proportion of Kwara and Kogi States as well as Edo State.

Lol Nigeria has no connections with Ethiopia. Also, Nigeria is among the top five ethnically diverse countries in the world. Yes, there are Niger-Congo languages spoken, but there are actually a lot of Nigerians who speak Afro-Asiatic and Nilo-Saharan languages as well. Most of the Afro-asiatic languages spoken natively in Nigeria belong to the Chadic branch. They are largely spoken in Northern and Central parts of Nigeria. Out of about 300 languages afro-asiatic languages that exist, 150 of them are actually Chadic. The Nilo-saharan speakers are largely concentrated in the Northeast. The most widely spoken Nilo-Saharan and Afro-Asiatic(outside of Arabic) languages are both spoken in Nigeria. Chadic is the overwhelmingly spoken Afro-asiatic branch with Semitic and Berber minorities. Here is a breakdown with a few examples:
Afro-asiatic
Chadic- Hausa, Marghi, Angas, Tangale
Semitic- Baggara
Berber- Tamajaq
Nilo-Saharan
Kanuri
I've been wanting to know. I heard that Tigrinya and Amharic are both related and similar. If so, how well can both speakers understand each other?

Hi 9jakool, tnx for the info. The reason I say Nigerian languages belong to only to Niger-Congo was because of the book I referred it's only stated like that. The book might ignored the other 2 super-families spoken in those areas. So, I'm sorry for the mistake!

Amharic and Tigragn are very related. They both came from the Geez language(Geez now only used in the Ethiopian churches, like Latin used in the Catholic Churches). But, Tigragn is much related with the Tigre language(spoke only in Eritrea) relatively than Amharic. Amharic is 70% Semitic and 30% Cushitic, but the other two are almost Semitic. All those 3 languages are the only sisters languages of Geez language.

Geez isn't not understood by the common people. The language only serve in the Ethiopian church by the priests, bishops and other church members. Someone who go to church can learn the language if he/she wants, but other than that it's best to call it a dead language.
