Brain drain! Most of our qualified medical personnel have left the country with the intention of never coming back, the government is not helping matters, our hospitals and health care centres are ill equipped, the number of people venturing into the field is dropping over the years because of cost and length of training which is made further complex by unprecedented breaks and so on

This could be attributed to aggression from the medical doctors and unfavourable or non existence health policy. It takes the grace and love of God for someone to work in our health care system. The NMA is a cult that is opposed to the progress of other health workers so why wouldn't they migrate?
Also the universities are not helping matters. Graduating from disciplines such as medicine, pharmacy and dentistry in Nigeria is like hell. Apart from the annual ASSU strike, you see these students spilling and splashing over and over again. This can discourage the young ones from studying such courses.
The government too should be partly held responsible. They have not provided the needed technology for our hospitals to run efficiently and the students are never properly taken care of. The president is currently in London receiving treatment. That tells it all i guess?
I weep for my country.

It all boils down to the way health professionals are treated in the country. In other countries, people aspire and work hard to be doctors, nurses and midwives because they know that at the end of their struggle, there is job security, very good pay and a good pension scheme. What is the motivation to spend years studying medicine in Nigeria? I am a medical students and like many other Nigerian medical students abroad, would love to come back at the end of my studies and be part of the Nigerian healthcare system but what are the prospects? Why should I leave a place where there is a definite good job at the end of my studies, with good equipment to use, good pay and good pension scheme to Nigeria where uncertainty is the order of the day? I think it's our education system that is causing this predicament.. Look at how hard it is to enter medical school... In us.. It is relatively easier. .... Irrespective your major, you can apply for med school so far you go through pre med and pass the pre exquisites.. Bt in Nigeria.. Med school is highly restricted to science students... There are so many people who are not science students and have passion for med school.....govt can introduce educational structure similar to the US and believe me, health personnels will sky rocket!

So we should stay here and be looking at people with mentalities like your own abi,and be earning peanuts. most nigerian doctors go abroad for residency, to further their studies so they still end up paying foreigner school fees and they get good exposure in a working system. Meanwhile the babalawo is not far away.

What about someone with a first degree in a basic medical science field? Can they go straight into Graduate entry Medicine?

Not only nurse or midwifery other health professional cadre like Health Officer, Pharmacy, CHEW, laboratory scientists, should be employed to complement the efforts of the federal government.

Yep you can. As long as your first degree is science related then you qualify to apply for graduate entry medicine. However it's very competitive

Competitive as in difficult to get in?

Yes it is very very hard. More so than undergraduate medicine which is hard as well. You also have to have at least a 2.1 in your first degree for your application to be considered at all. With graduate medicine you have to have lots of volunteer work, work experience/shadowing, and have things about you that will make you stand out from everyone else who's who's applying because places are limited and most people will have a first class in their first degree (most still won't get in).
