that is why doctors should supervise all treatments or prescription. good clinical history with emphasis on family history, drug reactions and likes could have prevented this. besides, if sulphur-containing drug is administered on any child, the prescriber watchs out for signs of reactions in first 24 hours. This principle applies to all potentially dangerous drugs. |

SirVintageCock:Listen to yourself, "...it doesn't mean that the wrong medication was given to him...", did you even check the hospital and the nurse attitudes to the boy's plight. How the nurse abandoned him and the hospital too. |

The student is reacting to the medication do not necessarily mean that he was given the wrong drugs. The boy will get better 1 Like |

Pidgin2: Your ignorance is self-effacing. And quite embarrassing tbh. The clinic has the responsibility to gather this data and ensure preventive action. it clearly did not do so, and no parent will not know if a child has allergy. because so often as little children their contact with drugs reveal such info. okay digest! |

Nigerian Army, this child must be totally well without scares on his body. Yes, no doubt,. command is a very good school to go to, but this is oneoff case same time, the child must be well. |

Joe4real701:just shut up. What if the parents did not disclose to the school authority about the child's allergy. As far as the school did not administer fake drugs, the parents should be held responsible for negligence 1 Like |

VocalWalls: There is no ''neutralizer'' for an adverse drug reaction like Steven-Johnson syndrome, the patient is treated supportively even in the best of hospitals. This boy is lucky to have lived, SJS has been known for its high mortality rate even in the world's best hospitals. The title of this write-up reeks of ignorance, no ''wrong medicine'' was administered to this patient. He simply had an adverse drug reaction to a drug. Sadly, Nigerian hospitals keep little or no patient records, so there is little chance of knowing who would likely suffer from an ADR to a drug. The time people would spend on here castigating the medical personnel in this case should rather be spent learning lessons to prevent a recurrence. 3 Likes |

TarOrfeek: Hehehehe, how do you know they didn't ask for previous medical records? All millitary schools ask students to undergo medical tests before admission into boarding house. There are forms to fill that includes places where details of any previous medical issues can be noted I don't think you are capable of intellectual discussions, you just want to quote and make yourself feel intelligent, you aren't worth my time(no offense) |
Re: Nigerian Military School Nurse Administers Wrong Medicine On Student by Nobody: 11:33am On May 19, 2017 |
Pidgin2: none taken! your time, as you have proven by quoting me serially, is very cheap! Intellectual heavy weight, if only you can expand the limits of your thinking. even if na just slightly, you would know that the buck ends at the table of the School. Only. Since the parents have not given consent to have drugs widely known to counteract, administered to their ward. aunty, I'm not an intellectual person. in fact I'm not smart. but youre pretending that you're smart. it's unfair. and you're on heat. bitter hot one at that. |
Re: Nigerian Military School Nurse Administers Wrong Medicine On Student by Cloudrise: 11:38am On May 19, 2017 |
TarOrfeek:Are you alright? In this present days where parents forge medical reports just to ensure that their children gain admission. People like you are so quick to point fingers without even considering the facts. Pls don't be biased in your judgement, the parents may have their own faults because I'm sure the school will work with the medical reports the parents give them |
Re: Nigerian Military School Nurse Administers Wrong Medicine On Student by Nobody: 11:52am On May 19, 2017 |
Cloudrise: People who undergo clinic card registration, are thought of as having been admitted. So I can not say for sure that the parents, were may have towed that line. Even the parents were ignorant of the child's reactivity to certain drugs. A good nurse, as alluded by posters above, should ask orally, the patient (a 12 yo reasoning child) if he/she has had prior case of drug reactivity. Surely the child will never lie. Because this is a nurse, and as a boarder, the nurse is almost god. On clinic cards, except stated NO/YES, reactivity to certain drugs should not be speculated. School is at fault. that girl on her hot miserable heat should take note. hehehehe |
Re: Nigerian Military School Nurse Administers Wrong Medicine On Student by AreaFada2: 11:55am On May 19, 2017 |
SirVintageCock: People just post anyhow. Either just a bad reaction like SJS or the drug was contaminated with sulphur. And more could be out there. We all know fake drugs are in circulation. SJS can even overlap with TEN. No evidence the nurse gave the wrong drug. Any evidence the patient could not have been exposed to sulphur earlier? Bad for the young student to suffer such. But the investigation seems inadequate. |

dhardline:It's difficult to accurately forsee a drug reaction. Any person blaming this nurse is just out for mischief. SR has formed a penchant for demonizing pple without doing proper investigation and just bcoz they are not based in Nigeria they feel they are immuned from whatever irreparable harm their sometimes shallow reporting does. Fansidar(Amalar,Laridox), and Septrin too,are commonly prescribed drugs that a lot of pple are prescribed for& take without any adverse reaction whatsoever. Its even recommended that Fansidar b given to every pregnant woman at least thrice during d course of her pregnancy. But d few that do react to their sulphur content can come down with dramatic reactions, which if not tackled promptly can really be devastating. The only fault here is that d child was not promptly treated for d drug reaction, but d nurse or dr here cannot b charged for anything. At d rate at which some of these badly investigated reports on Drs,hospitals &nurses are going in Nigeria, it may reach a point wen patients treatment are delayed due to fear of arrest or prosecution in Nigeria to d extent of that delay being a cause of many adverse outcomes in future,& not even d administration of a wrong drug or dosage! 3 Likes |

Re: Nigerian Military School Nurse Administers Wrong Medicine On Student by claremont(m): 12:27pm On May 19, 2017 |
doctokwus: Fansidar, if I'm correct, contains 2 compounds that are known teratogens. Avoid in pregnancy. I'm guessing this is the reason why some women in Nigeria give birth to deformed babies that look like goats, and everyone would start blaming witches and wizards for it. |

Re: Nigerian Military School Nurse Administers Wrong Medicine On Student by doctokwus: 12:44pm On May 19, 2017 |
claremont:Whoever gave that info is totally wrong. Fansidar is part of standard Antenatal management in malaria endemic areas like ours. It was formerly recommended as a triple course intake as a preventive measure against malaria. Now d latest protocol is that d pregnant woman shud even get 5 courses of it as long as she doesn't react! Its just that it shouldn't be prescibed or taken within d first 3months of pregnancy. The logic is simple:Malaria untreated is more likely to kill mother and child than Fansidar that may cause damage to unborn child, not necessary death, and spare mother. 1 Like |

SirVintageCock: Was his history taken? Do they have records of what children are allergic to? Do you just give people medication without enquiry? Should they have abandoned the boy for 3 days with no neutralizer? Why did they lie that they gave him Augmentin when it was Fansidar that he was given? Why lie? |
