In the spirit of giving back, I'd like to share my experience at the dreaded Houston POE. Even though I feel hurt that since I join this forum, the 2 post I had posted for inquiries have been deleted, and I really don't why.
It's all good, cos I still was diligent in reading the threads and equipping myself.

I got my visa on a vigin passport in Feb 2017 and didn't know I was pregnant until weeks later, and when asked by the Vo then I said I wasn't. Was doing research online and bumped on this platform, where I keenly followed the Change of Intent info. I sent my change of intent sometime in April as I was planning to travel in June. Got the reply..."I'm not obligated to tell them, but be able to prove at POE I can handle my bills etc"

To cut the long story...Got to the airport(Abuja) June 4 while checking in at Lufthansa, the lady asked if I was pregnant I said yes, she asked if I had my fit to fly, I said yes, she said I'll need the port healthy cert. I told her I'm only 22 weeks and according to their online info, I wouldn't need that except from 35weeks, she insisted. I went to the portal and the lady said it was 2k, I said I thought it was 1k5, she said no, I just gave her the 2k. She took my temperature and BP and gave me the receipt.
Finished everything and we took off by 10:20pm for Frankfurt. Food was horrible- I begin purge for plane. Thank God I sat close to the lavatory. 4hrs layover and we were Houston bound - I no gree chop again, just asked for their dry bread, butter with Coke.

Landed at Houston June 5 around 1:30pm US time (just like I read here) target one young innocent looking CBP guy and stayed on his queue...

CBP- Good afternoon ma'am, passport plz?
Me- Good afternoon (hands it)
Cbp- why are you in the US
Me- Vacation and Childbirth
(looking a bit disoriented and was signalling for a colleague)
Cbp- How long are you staying
Me- 5months
Me - I have made some deposit at the hospital and I have correspondence with my doctor.
Cpb- plz let me have them. (Still calling his colleauge)
Me- (hands them to him)
At this time the colleague comes and he explains to him- This is her 1st time in the US and she plans to give birth, these are correspondence with her doctor and deposit receipt...
Cbp2 - who will you be staying with
Me- my sister in Dallas.
Cbp2 - Are you giving birth in Dallas
Me- Yes, Baylor Scott and White Hospital is also in Dallas.
Cbp2- during your interview, did you start this intention?
Me- no, because I didn't know at the time, but I sent a change of intent letter (reaching for the reply) and this was the reply I got.
He takes his time to read it and hands it back.
Cbp2 - I see you have paid $1000 deposit, how much is everything going to cost u?
Me- about $6k5
Cbp2 - V or Cs
Me- V.
Cbp1- I see you have $8k5 with you.
Me- yes, should I show you.
Cbp2- yes, but be careful, you don't want to call any attention to yourself.
Showed them in my purse
Cbp2- all 100bills
Me- yes.
CBP 2- How did you get all this cash
Me- part of my savings from salary and most from my husband.
Cbp2- is your husband joining you
Me- yes, much later
Cbp1- what do you do?
Me- Program and Communications Officer with....
Cbp1- Your husband?
Me- He is bleep bleep at.....
Cbp1- plz place your fingers on the machine
CBP2- make sure you keep all your receipt, cos we will request for it the next time you come. Also, do not accept any medicare here cos it will affect you visa and return to the states.
Welcome to the US (CBP1 was stamping my passport already)

Congratulations! Please what's your hospital fee and doctors fee. Thank you.
Baylor McKinney gave me hospital fee of 6570 for V-delivery and about 9k for cs .

thermolady:
Greetings to all in the house: 1st ‘missionary’ journey successfully concluded mainly thanks to advice & tips from this Forum.

For me, it’s been one favour or miracle after the other.
1st, my Godsent, confident Elpaso obgyn allowed me to have a vagi/normal delivery despite my quite advanced age & high risk, precious nature of pregnancy. Was successfully induced at 40 weeks.
ii. this normally superbusy doctor patiently stayed with me for over an hour in very final stage of labour, encouraging me to push despite 2 doses of oxygen & my worry that it might end in C-Section.
iii. Discharged on morning of 3rd day. After being presented with xtra bill of $1,900 (despite paying full package price b4 delivery), hospital later relented after visits & calls & adjusted my account balance to zero.
*Note: After delivery, even if for ex, u’re on a payment package covered by doctoresparati, you may still get bills outside of the package; don’t panic, simply ensure you see/call the Fin. Counsellors of the hospital & explain you are on selfpay package. E.g I was sent a $10, 944 anaesthesia bill despite epidural being already part of package costs. However some bills must be paid outside package e.g 2nd PKU test for baby [$12] & separate Pathology bills for mother & baby[ours was $159 after 30% discount].
iv. My Naija paediatrician saved phototherapy cost by ordering sunbathing 4 jaundiced baby instead[His bill: $300]. LO otherwise in perfect health. Speedily refused hearing test for her (fear of xchange rate is beginning of wisdom!) Baby’s Birth Certificate [$23] was ready after 1 week. Collected it with Int. Drivers’ Licence & Lagos US embassy notarised form [‘FEDEXed’ to me by DH].
*Note: In Elpaso, Nigerian Voters Card NOT ACCEPTED as ID for baby’s BC collection. [I photographed & sent my signature & passport photo by email to DH who then applied for Int. Drivers’ license on my behalf].
*[/b]Asked for my baby’s Social Security card to be mailed to Dallas address. On receipt, [b]trusted Dallas based relation opened it & gave me the no. over phone which I then supplied to Elpaso Passport office.
v. Applied for baby’s US passport & flew to Dallas following day. It’s usually ready in 3 days but as I was leaving Elpaso b4 it would be ready, I had it posted [$165+$15] to me in Dallas. Wasted time & money in Dallas for overnight return courier envelope in applying for Emergency Travel Certificate for baby only to be informed that it was no longer being issued. With travel date being the following Monday, had to apply online for Nigerian Visa [2 money orders of $180+ $85] & sent baby’s US passport (with return courier envelope) to Nigerian embassy on Friday (without agent).Visa issued same day (proper one, not biro) & baby’s passport couriered back to me in Dallas the very next day (Saturday)! God bless Mr. Usman for prompt & free assistance to me.
vi. The Elpaso landlord (who had been temporarily away in Naija )of the accommodation that I relocated to from Intown Suites, briefly returned to Elpaso & realised that he had been my private SAT/TOEFL student 20 years ago in Festac, & freely chauffeured, shopped and even babysat once for me in last few days of my stay in Elpaso. I returned to Lagos 2 weeks later & in Akoka [Lagos] miraculously ran into him AGAIN while he was visiting someone before he finally returned to Elpaso. MORAL: [/b]it’s a very [b]tiny world! Never be nasty/cheat anyone in the belief that you’ll never meet again.
vii. At Dallas airport, was charged $71.60 for infant ticket by Emirates. Had paid N524, 000 for my own return ticket in November 2016. No bassinet on 14.30 hr Dallas/Dubai leg but journey not bad. Allowed to take special (black) airport baby stroller (mine had been checked in at Dallas boarding gate) overnight to hotel. Bassinet provided on Dubai/Lagos leg but baby preferred my arms!
• I must say, this Forum has been an invaluable source of info to me; may it grow from strength to strength; Forum Old Timers, u’re like classroom teachers, pls do not tire of repeating answers to the questions of Forum Newbies or rudely tell them to go back & start reading from 1st page; not everyone has the time or strength for research!

So finally my e-brethren, I’m very glad to be back home to our dear Naija despite the heat, encountered primitiveness & NEPA. [there is no place like home grin]. What matters is that after a safe delivery, I am now a mother at last after more than 22 years of marriage.[still ttcing sisters, pls. hold on to ur dream]. I give God all the glory.
Hello Thermolady, i am happy for you and hope your baby is doing great. Please i am currently in elpaso in the elpaso to have my baby and i have been informed that it takes a long time for the birth certificate to arrive. Please i will like to know if you had to an extra fee for the certificate to arrive early. Kindly advise on how you were able to scale through.

Hmmmm. The only draw back of HNMC is their pediatric fee. I was given a quote of $1430 eventually paid 715 after several phone calls and heated negotiation. My friend that used them last month was given a quote of 1800 and paid 900 after several battle. So prepare like 1000 for them.

Uhmmmmm, thank you very much.

A word of advice - be confident and carry plenty money.

Ps: Don't blame your family, friends and relatives abroad. They dont have the info you want because they don't need it (their life na easy one as citizens), and you have to politely educate them, before you become Mrs know know and oversabi for their own country. My sisters will tell me, "we no know ooo", do your research and we will help you verify here.

Hello Guys,

Need Info from anyone who just used oakbend in Richmond or somewhere in Houston
Dr Z did not provide an itemized bill statement but rather a different document highlighting that that is what they give patients. Also, oakbend just forwarded zero balance letter and we asked for itemized zero bill statment and they said they no longer give this.
Please advise if this is a new and general trend coz I know the VO and CBP usually ask for itemized statements and we got this the last time we used oakbend two years ago

Please advise if this is a new and general trend coz I know the VO and CBP usually ask for itemized statements and we got this the last time we used oakbend two years ago
ask account... Go to the office and meet her... She's flexible and prompt.

Ask for ur receipts.... I doubt they'll deny u that.

So zero balance is from Hosp.
Dr will give u theirs
Pediatrician will give theirs
Anesthesiologist will give theirs
Brown and associates will give theirs.

So these are ur itemized bills.
Trust me the long sheets or receipt from d Hospital.. Especially Hospital leads to no visa ( most times) ... E dey put person for trouble...
Cos vo or cbp don't understand how 19000 became zero after 2300.. If u like speak English.. Dey won't understand ur self pay "bullsh*t"

It is possible o. I bought a Delta ticket 3 weeks to my vacation journey in November last year for my son and I and it was a little under 400k. About 398k or so. grin

The hospital will tell you it takes 6-8 weeks for legal reasons, but the birth certificate arrives in anywhere from 5-12 business days at the most.

Hello house,

please just having a conversation with my aunt n she was implying that whatever surname i register with @ the hospital is what they will put for my unborn child even though i told her i would be coming with my marriage certificate( i have not done change of name, only got married in late last yr plus my visa is in my maiden name).

can anyone clarify plz? has any1 been in this situation?
it's what u fill in d form that'll b written there.
Go with ur marriage certificate and explain you haven't changed ur name. Cos u will need to show ur passport.
