Hi guys!

I was denied today. First time at the embassey in lagos.
I had my bsc in the sciences but I had applied for bachelors in religious studies, as these is in line with my future aspirations.

vo asked me why I chose bsc and not msc,
me: my answer was off the question

I became nervous because I had studied all other questions except this shocker. I fombled.

But now I have done the needful and even covered more deeply on other areas.

Please when can I reapply? Semester starts this fall august.

From one bsc to another.... this should have been your first question of focus. ....

Lesson Learnt for you : it not about studying all other questions..... Everyone Situation is different so while you prepare, what you first do is to work and prepare based on your situation . I am shocked that you are shocked about this question

Hello house,
I applied to 5 schools for Fall 2017 and got denied by 3 of them, i had to send email to the remaining two schools to defer my application till Spring 2018 to enable me repackage my application(maybe rewrite GRE);

My Profile:
Course: MA Economics
CGPA: 2.5/5
GRE: V154/Q146(300)
TOEFL: 102

Status:

Illinois State University - denied
Cleveland State University - denied
Eastern Illinois State Uni - denied

SUNY - Buffalo State College - deferred application till Spring 2018
ST. Cloud State Uni - deferred application till Spring 2018

I don't know if i applied to the wrong schools or if the fact that i had extra year in the uni affected my application. I have since applied for WES evaluation. Please if anyone has info about schools that would accept me based on my profile, I'm interested. Hoping to hear from you guys please.

I was denied this morning. My transcript goes thus:

Vo:where are you going to

Me:  I am going to Oklahoma state University for my masters  in computer science with focus in big data analytics

Vo:have u applied for a visa before

Me:yes
(last year after my internship and before NYSC,  I applied for a b2 visa to visit my fiance at Tulsa,  he is a PhD student at the University of Tulsa)

Vo:what's your highest level of qualification
Me:Bachelors degree in computer science

Vo:what do you do now

Me:I just completed nysc this April nd now I work as a private tutor teaching students in secondary school mathematics and ICT

Vo:who is your sponsor

Me:my elder brother, said his name

Vo:am sorry you do not qualify for a visa at this time and gave me the blue paper

Pls house, what could I have done better? Could it be the fact that I just completed NYSC and I really do not have experience (before my NYSC last year, like 2 months after grad, I had an internship with PwC Nigeria for about 3 months. After the internship, I left and went for service) or could it be the fact that I applied for a b2 visa prior to this.
(school resumes in August and I do not want to defer to Spring 2018)
I was not asked for any doc, asides my I-20 and international passport.

I guess the fact that you have a fiance in the US. In their mind, you have no intention of coming back.
Just my opinion

The bold did you say it , or you just said Yes or it was noted on your previous DS160 .... If you said it with your mouth then maybe that was too much information .

This thing is just how questions are been asked and in what manner ......... The first questions and answers already raises a red flag ........ you tried to go see your finance you were not given so now let try with student visa ......Not that anything is wrong but it can raise a flag.......... It can set the tone of any interview to go down as the followup questions shows your work experience has nothing to do with Computer as such even though its your first degree .

In this case you might not have done anything wrong but just the tone of the whole line of questioning .... you could have meet another VO with totally different sets of questions that would have gone in your favour ... I cannot give any feedback but to say you can only hope for another VO who asks you questions that goes in your favour .

My pick is why didn't your fiance send u f2? Did you guys filled engaged in your ds160? If pulling out his records and find out that both of you ain't engage. Then that's denial. Also, you shouldn't apply for b1/b2 to visit your fiance in the first place. That's no no. You re now applying as a student to go to USA seems suspicious to the VO. I have replied ur whasapp.

You took that out of my mouth.

@Moravelu, Re-apply asap and provide a convincing reason why you chose to dive into another BSc major. (Not just because "It's inline with my future aspiration"... Show passion and go a lil bit into detail)

I think your CGPA is too low for MA in Economics. You'd need lots of experince to make up for this. MA economics is very competitive. May be you should think of choosing another course closely related to MA economics.

I have to say that the people asking those questions don't get the point Bro.... You will have to do research and research and research just to answer a question about your traveling, and besides who wants to go abroad and does not know ivy league? I don't get the point or idea... If they think you, Walspring, LagosismyHome and the rest will do their research they are joking.... I know because that was why I first failed.... Texrem said he was going to check school website for me to help make the point on which I chose my school better... But guess what, he also told me that he was busy... I played dumb and was pressing phone... Lol. I saw the result. If we can't know the school or why we picked them.... Even without visa interview, then there's no point in traveling for studies.

Good that you've learned and you're proud of yourself now. Such self starter skills is required from others too.

I was denied last week but perhaps you didn't see mine. Pls help me. Does it matter if my i20 bears major education and my admission letter bears Mathematics? Only because I applied to two programs and deferred my maths program? Does this matter to the VO

Sorry Man!!
But please always try to be consistent with your story before the VO.
Switching from Sciences to Bsc Religious is a tough knot to crack....

Also what is your Age?
I would prefer changing my course over there than making the switch from here.

And what is that dream of yours that requires a BSC in religious Studies. Maybe a Masters can still achieve the same dream.

The issue of not expecting the questions was because you had not really absorbed past transcripts. Don't cram questions. Just understand the process so the answers can come Naturally...
Best of Luck Man.

Good morning All.

I am a young lady in my early 30s, married with kids. I graduated with first class in Economics (2011) cgpa 6.5/7. Recently wrote Gre and scored 156 in Q and 141 in verbal, AW 3.I have been working as a financial analyst with professional training with ACCA. Though I have never tried any university in USA but tried few in Canada for master. I got one already but without funding. Just don't know if am missing something out. I really want a master program with funding.

Please don't see my question as being stupid kindly assist me with information.

Thank you all.

You have a very nice CGPA.

Your GPA, Certification and work experience would be a major boost to your profile.

Try and carefully select schools and mail the Graduate Coordinator.

Also you could use the search bar on NL if any transcript has your intended course with funding..

That basically all i know...

Probably anyone else could assist you with more information.

I was denied today at Walter Carrington but I am so ashamed writing this now. I applied for two different programmes in CSU. MED curriculum (for summer but I didn't go) and Msc mathematics (deferred from spring to fall as I couldn't go) for fall which I really want to do. The school sent me both I20 at different times though but since I didn't go I requested for a new one for maths, fall... I got my I20 with the admission letter clipped to it stating the maths programme. So I got all docs ready and applied. I was just about to sign my I20 today Wen I discovered the major on the I20 was education, Not mathematics. This was where I lost my senses. I was torn between weda to go on with the interview or cancel it. This has never happened to anyone on NL before. I decided to put some points together to defend the education programme hoping to get the correct I20 when I resume

VO : documents pls
Me: did

Vo: what is taking you the US
Me: To Pursue My masters degree in education and curriculum studies with a concentration in maths

Vo: are you a teacher
Me :yes, I work with that school

Vo: what's the age Range of your studentS
Me :9-10

Vo : do you need a masters degree to teach that age
Me: my aspiration is beyond this though, and my new degree will only further advance my career as a mathemticiaN

Vo: how many schools did you apply
Me:3

Vo: name them
Me: UBC CANADA, CSU OHIO and I went blank.. ..totally Bowie disappeared

VO: it's okay and gave me blue

Everything I said was right but my prep was purely based on mathenatics major and all my responses were just new. I wish I never applied to two courses. How I didn't see the Mistake in my I20 is still a shame till now. I am pained

Firstly confirm with the school if your i20 has the right information .......That would be my first focus . Also mistakes are painful just learn from it and move on . Find out what exactly should your i20 be and then refire . Focus your answer on Mathematics and go again . You should not have focused on Education whichis no your real line because the passion wont show . Focus on what you really wanted which is mathematics .... sometimes the i20 classification is not so much an issue (as long as you confirmed with the school)

Your ties to Nigeria are not really Strong atleast by your answers. You applied for a VISA before and you have just concluded NYSC, working as a Private tutor.

So you gave the impression that you have no obligation or responsibility to return to. You are as free as a bird!! grin (thats the impression they had) sad

One of my aunts wanted me to visit US, i luckily rejected because of the lessons I learnt here..

The area where you would have taken advantage is if you had any kind of funding at all, it would have covered up for the Red Flags..

If your profile is funding worthy then work on getting any kind of funding.. Even if it's $1000 or anything like that.

If they ask how do you intend to pay ?
You could go like: I was offered funding and my Brother is paying the Rest. That single answer can change the discussion pattern....

Also the question pattern from the VO left you with no other choice.
So you could still prepare (with changes from your previous interview) and reapply.
Best of Luck

Your GRE was the deal breaker. How badly do you want this?

With that weak GPA, if you could get at least 168 on your GRE Quant, and at least a 160 on your Verbal, you'll boost your odds of getting in. Again, if you want this badly enough, you'll prep for the GRE to get those scores.

FYI, schools don't care how many times you take the test. Just put your best foot forward.

Cheers!

I guess it is time to take a backseat but before I do so, let me share this.

When I joined this thread, my first 3 questions were ignored cry I felt pained and decided to start reading from part 1. By the time I got to part 4, I was so confident that I'd end up getting my visa cheesy I also got all the answers to my questions. I've met a lot of people on this thread and more often than not, our problem is a lack of sincerity sad For instance, there's a lot of people that emailed me for a mock interview. It was crystal clear that they weren't going to school but when I asked them, they lied. Please, how do you want such people to be helped? I don't mind if you're 'running away', not everyone is meant to go to school but try and be sincere in all your dealings.
Most people here want to be spoonfed, like seriously There's a lot of answers by just typing your questions on Google.
Also, I think I have said it before, we hate being told the truth. You'd warn people against applying to certain schools and they'd hate you. You encourage them to rewrite standard exams and they flair up. Well, I know some people have learnt their lessons (I won't mention names).
There was a time on this thread someone was denied a visa and she started blaming people for not replying her PMs. All of us here are adults, if you can't handle responsibilities like this, I wonder how you'd cope studying or working over here. I don't wanna bore you with my post.

Success to all future visa applicants.

MODIFIED

Please don't go to anyhow school. Go to a good school so that you can get a good job.

I really want a master program with funding.

Please don't see my question as being stupid kindly assist me with information.

Thank you all.

Can you re-take the GRE? There's a whole world of difference between a 156Q and a 162Q. If you want funding, re-take the test and try to ace it across board.

Me thinks the fact that you have no strong ties to home and having a fiancé in the US might have been the excuse. You seems not to have been committed to any job that could probably bring you back home.

DHL should be able to pick up from the school directly

Some schools don't accept pick up like that since they asked for courier fee from applicants
