Who is this guy ??

We Africans should be the one to donate books to you

We can buy our own damn books

Does he even know how many Universities we have in Africa and how many students are in those Universities
Young man, it's obvious you have never visited a Nigerian library and your ego would not let you believe what others who visit tell you

The idea that a discarded material from an institution of learning is to be sent back to Africa for student to study is very worrisome.

It is safe to say that the content of the material is outdated and irrelevant to today's knowledge, is there any point studying such?

Phillip you have tried, but painfully, back home here, the little ones wouldn't read anymore, they simply just want to sa'se (whatever that means angry)

So they'd rather not study at all instead of studying some past knowledge or history? They don't wanna sha book. They only wanna Sa'se!

isn't the phone more profitable than the books??

Tell me what's in the books and I'll tell you what needs to be added

Google will do more good than those expired books worth nothing from its source

that depends on what you do with the phone

a lot of people have smart phones but still come to ask me questions they can get thr answer to on Google

Lol, I actually think this move is misplaced and won't help African students in anyway. I rather agree with the suggestion by this guy below.

nairalandbuzz:
Many of you might call this a nice concept but to me,but is taking Tai Solarin University or so further backwards...

For them to throw away the books, it means they are outdated or the information in them has been surpassed...

What they need is very cheap Internet in Terrabytes like China and Japan where they deliver 1TB to homes and stable electricity not old outdated books.

I totally agree but when will that happen in Africa with the leaders that we have. I mean there are people without electricity and go to bed with an empty stomach .if we can't even still provide basics to our people .Those books might change someone's life no matter how outdated.

Well you might have a point but still we do not need to throw up our arms in despair. In fact some parts of Africa have made great strides and e-books which are not outdated would serve them better, I'm talking about Rwanda. That is a model African state and they have the best leader ever in Paul Kagame.

funny enough my dear, is the fact you've ignored that' knowledge can never be outdated, you have to get the basics first then you build on what existed before, how would this happen when you see reasons why these precious materials should remain discarded... meanwhile What book are u currently reading?oh Nigerians dont read!

You may call them outdated but the ones in our universities are more outdated... And if you compare the ones down here with the discarded ones in US ;The discarded would be current here

But then I think the best idea would be to have an e- library that can connect to any university library portal in the world and then have access to those libraries, instead of spending millions to ship books down to Africa

Read it again... What is e-library without Internet? Library portals are subscribed to themselves by schools. In Goldsmith college University of London, we have an e-library then and I noticed that they are subscribed to many other open source and paid resources not schools.

When you decide to study someone else's garbage, you end up playing catch up and you can never lead the park, because that is all there is - trying to meet up.
Your school of thought about building on what existed before is not new to me, we have analyzed this in many technical management symposiums, it is a very good recipe to remain a third world country.

What we need is indigenous ideas, not imitation and trying to invent the wheel.

As you have asked, i am on Modern control system by Richard Dorf & Robert Bishop 10th edition. Do not worry about it, it is not a pacesetters novel...

by "lead the park, " I hope you mearnt lead the pack?
and by doing so you have to first inculcate the reading habits to the average Nigerian youth, by letting freelance reading have its way, honestly he could send those books n they could be given out free or cheaply , n not discard simply because one lady behind the moniker feels they are outdated or garbage
go ask the likes of spurgeon, or lake if they wernt ardent seekers of knowledge, did they consider it garbage I doubt... and for the record who even reads such books? these I mean Modern control

Hmmmm..... Philip Alabi is here. interesting conversations, I have read the comments. I want to say I understand everyone's opinions and sentiments. Please feel free to ask me any questions. I am glad to answer them. You can also meet us on our social platforms to find out more....

I will say this though. I am a student in the US, I am not from a wealthy background. I have enough money to just pay my bills. I saw a chance to help and I decided to do just that. Trust me, the books are very relevant, that is why we want the libraries (in Nigeria) to pick the books they want themselves. We find the books, they select only what they want and we send them. This idea is for the Nigerian that seeks access to these relevant information. For the student or youth that needs access to relevant information, more than what is in Lecturer's handout, and maybe someday for those that begins to develop good reading habits. For people to develop reading habits, the Library needs to be stocked first. We are only trying to help that happen. There are lots of people that only have access to books in the library during their University days, I was like that while in School back home. I didn't have money to buy textbooks, but I wanted to know. We may not be able to get Nigeria to where it needs to be, maybe not in this generation, but we need to START, WE NEED TO START DOING SOMETHING. little drops of water makes a mighty ocean.
