10.5 million children do not attend school in Nigeria — most of them are girls.
Written By Tess Sohngen.

Educating young girls and women is one of the best ways for developing countries to escape extreme poverty and move toward a more sustainable future. But in one African country, millions of schoolchildren are currently out of school, throwing this future into jeopardy.

In Nigeria, an estimated 10.5 million children are not going to school, the most of any other country in the world, according to the Nigerian government.
Girls, street children and children of nomadic groups were the most affected, the education ministry's permanent secretary Adamu Hussaini told BBC News. This is the first time a senior official has acknowledged the severity of the problem.

The problem in Nigeria is not a high dropout rate. Rather, the issue is that many children never have the opportunity to get an education in the first place. About 75% of the children not in school have never stepped foot in a classroom.

The Nigerian government blames cultural factors preventing these children from going to school. Critics, including BBC editor Jimeh Saleh, say the problem is due to lack of government funding for education systems.

Last year, the Nigerian government spent only 8% of its $12.2 trillion budget on education. The UN recommends developing countries should spend at least 26% of their fiscal year budget on education.
Experts say inadequate funding of Nigeria’s education system will result in increased adult illiteracy, lower GDP and poor achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Last week, education and women’s rights campaigner Malala Yousafzai visited the acting president and schoolchildren at the Yerwa Government Girls School in Nigeria. She asked the president to declare an “education state of emergency.”

“Nigeria is the richest country in Africa but has more girls out of school than any country in the world,” Yousafzai said during her visit. “Studies are clear — educating girls grows economies, reduces conflict and improves public health. For these girls and for their country’s future, Nigeria’s leaders must immediately prioritise education.”

Of the 10.5 million children out of school, 60% are from the northern region of the country, where education and safety are threatened by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.

Since its insurgency in 2009, the group has killed 2,295 teachers, displaced 19,000 educators and destroyed nearly 1,400 schools. Over 3 million children in the northeast region, where Boko Haram has done most of its damage, do not attend school.

Organizations like UNICEF Nigeria are working to get more children in school and to raise awareness for the importance of education of girls and children, but they face a long, uphill battle.

“No nation can achieve economic prosperity without a sound, inclusive and functional education system,” Mr. Hussaini said at the 62nd National Council on Education (NCE) in Kano on Monday.

And that region has ruled Nigeria the longest. Our leaders are WICKED. They'll use this to get loans from world leaders and end up embezzling it again.

Fear the leaders in the North because they consciously promote that for political reasons and foot almajiri religion extremist soldiers . Fomer president Jonathan try to help almajiris but the northern elites that send their born to rule children abroad for studies connive to stop him.

Only 10.5 million?
Rubbish report.

What of India whose population is almost equal the entire African population?
1.2 billion indians compared to 1.3 billion people in Africa currently.

The truth is that India has more children out of school than the entire Nigerian population.

No matter how bad what they are learning is,it's still better than being totally oblivious. At least it increases the ability to be able to discern from being used for mere political suicide missions.

Alhamdulillah, the north has the highest population of almajiri as you are saying. Let me tell you, the only advantage you have over us is that western education reaches you before us. If not because of that you can't even compare us with yourself.

They say "literacy is the ability to read and write in any language" and although I'm not in anyway in support of almajiri, thank God they are out to learn.

I'm currently living in southern Nigeria and I know how education is here.

close to me there located a primary school established 1897 but you will cry if you see the level to which it is up till now. In 1897 western education is not started in northern Nigeria.

so you people will be surprise in the coming decades, while your educated boys concentrate all they learn for yaho- yahoo, yahoo plus, drug trafficking and prostitution.

We northerners are developing.

Below is a picture of an almajiri that graduated with first class in mathematics and is currently serving in a federal university in southern Nigeria.

He will beat you hands down in any competition.

With the way Nigerians think, that's never going to happen. Nigerians need to stop;

Being "sharp" guys

Giving and taking bribe.

Being dirty.

Stop jungle justice.

Stop being prejudiced.

Stop tribalism.

Stop blaming everything on god or the devil. They do not exist.

Start being accountable for their actions and decisions.

Stop saying it is the white man's fault.

Then and only then will you start hearing good things about Nigeria. There are more but these need to be taken care of first.
