Ghana operates no state police

Ghana is also multi ethnic/religious.

What Ghana did was to pursue good leadership and eliminate corrupt officials and tendencies regardless of ethnicity.....

Nnamdi Kanu is an ethnic jingoist.

You are comparing apples to oranges.

Unlike Nigeria that has 3 major ethnic groups, Ghana has one dominant ethnic group both in land size and population ( the Ashanti). What ever majority of them decides is the direction the nation goes.

Students of the of Ghana Medical School for some years now have been faced with a lot of challenges including the deplorable nature of their hostels and difficulty they endure in transporting themselves daily from the main campus to Korle-Bu for their studies.

Today, it’s exciting to know that, the next batch of UG medical school students will not suffer the same fate. Thanks to President John Dramani Mahama, the narrative has changed for our future medical practitioners.
In a few weeks, President John Mahama will commission the new 600-bed capacity University of Ghana Medical College situated on the University of Ghana, Legon campus.
Apart from providing a serene atmosphere for effective teaching and learning, this project will also significantly boost the university’s efforts to develop World-Class Human Resources and Capabilities to meet National Development needs and Global Challenges.
These exciting US medical college photos will make you want to become a medical student.
This project is Timely and a game changer especially for our medical school students and for an improved healthcare delivery in Ghana.

You guys are yet to understand that good quality education is not cheap. As at last I check, medical students in Ghana pay as much as $2200 per year which is still very cheap when compared to other notable universities in Africa. And these university is still funded by the government.

If something like these is built in unilag or other federal unis and fees are increased so as to be able to maintain it, you will be the same people to start protesting. The sooner we come to terms with the fact that quality education is not cheap, the better for all of us.

We like things to be given to us on a platter but still complain that they are not enough. That's why we churn out half baked unemployable graduates every year and still complain of the fall in the standard of education.

If you think education is cheap, try ignorance.

While not making excuses for the ruling class we must understand that Nigeria's size and system of governance is her undoing . If there was true federalism quality structures like this would abound in the different region according to their prioritisation of education but the case is different ... Money is spent in the wrong project and in the wrong place .... Federally owned schools litters the place with no adequate funding ...

If the country reduces the numbers of federally owned institution to one per zone and privatise the remain , the country can then afford the resources to upgrade to 21st learning environment.

I don't understand why we are complaining and condemning when we are the ones that are holding us down. Why blame our politicians when we are the ones that vote them into office....vote them in because of the wrong reasons.....tribal/ religious. When "our man" is in power.... he can do no wrong. ... everything that seems to be wrong can be justified. When "the other man" is in power... he can do nothing right. Should the "present man" establish such a university before he leaves office.... "the next man" that comes into office will allow it to deteriorate. ...cannot give it his full support because it wasn't built under his watch... wouldn't be part of his legacy. That is the vicious cycle we are in... the cause of every institution being in shambles... and nothing will change until we put our biases aside and elect leaders on their track record and hold them accountable. We can start with our local leaders.

Huh to be sincere I am jealous.... Lalasticlala I think we all need to see this.

We need to realise Nigeria can't fund all its universities to World Class. We need to pick 6(one from each region) flagship universities like the ivy leagues or C9 of China and fund it excessively like Ghana funds the university of Ghana, so that those universities can in turn help to solve some of our top most national problems.
Those universities would be
1) Mandated to reduce their various enrollment sizes to NUC recommended capacities.
2) Encouraged to put more emphasis on postgraduate/research education.
3) Allowed to determine its fees in line with an agreed aggregate with FG(Not expensive but not outrageously low)
4) Encouraged to do away with Catchment policies and Elds consideration for undergraduate enrollment and staff recruitment.
5) Encouraged to remain comprehensive universities but with a degree of speciality in certain disciplines e.g UI for Medicine/Surgery, ABU for Military research, UNN for renewable energy
6) Mandated to do away with ASUU
7) Encouraged to tap into industry partnership for more income.
cool Encouraged to create an important metric that assess researchers relevance in Scopus and Thompson Reuters web of science and base staff promotion on it.
9) Excessively funded by govt. Recommendation would be to allocate additional funds of 25 billion per university.
10) Mandated to publish annual independent financial audit report by either PwC or KPMG which would be posted on the University website as done by many world class university.
11) Encouraged to have a strong and updated internet presence to boost visibility of the universities. UI and UNN websites looks like junk.
12) Govt set up an apolitical technical committee and assess the performance of these universities across their core mandate, research relevance, international outlook and rankings(especially Times and ARWU)

So that would be 150 billion more for our flagship universities. Considering the fact that the Nigerian senate takes just about that amount as its annual budget then that shouldn't be too hard for Nigeria to afford.
wow..feel like buying u a beer..one of the most intelligent write up I have read..I still maintain that Nigerian youths are still the best in Afrca...it is just the condition and environment we found ourself in...that s all

This is the main point which no one wishes to talk about, the fees!

Nigerians no wan die but dem wan go heaven; better soup, na money kill am. Anyway, I think the govt should consider building some premium schools and hospitals like this, strictly for those who have the money to pay (and for those who can merit it through scholarships etc). A consideration should be given to building about 6 of these 'power' universities and hospitals and charging premium fees.

Of course it would be met with wild protests and condemnations with people tagging it a government of the elite trying to oppress the poor, but heck! People will always complain in everything. The fact is that having such in Nigeria would definitely benefit Nigeria in terms of funds saved on medical amd educational toirism.

We already have millions of Nigerians spending millions for common headache treatment overseas. Any policy move to trap those funds within Nigeria is to our collective benefit. Of course the premium institutions would also serve as a national pride and give us bragging rights amongst the comity of nations (even though the poor may not be able to access them).

Not only that. Nigerians with an enormous population then breed like rats. You see an average family having five children seeking university education, asking the government to pay the equivalent of about 30 million per head over the course of the program. Tell me. How can any government do that and still provide infrastructure like this.

Folks if you have more than one brother or sister growing up right now and will qualify for college education soon and you or your parents have no intent of paying the right fees to push them through and you support the way this country is structured then you have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT TO COMMENT NEGATIVELY ABOUT NIGERIA ON THIS THREAD because you are part and parcel of this problem, period.

What you see in Ghana and Benin and South Africa and England and Japan and....are small, sustainable populations who donot think college degrees are tickets to heaven but value them as instruments of personal and corporate development so are willing to pay the right sums to obtain them and if not have small families they can cater for. Yes, folks in the developed world jump through hurdles to get their wards college degrees, some paying huge debts years after graduation. That is value.

You're right though. We do breeed like pigs, also thanks to modern medicine we now have people living more that the previous life expectancy of before. Look at this numbers, the sharp increase in population probably had to do with peace amongst various tribes, western influence and aids, etc. While europe maintains a steady figure. From 1980 to 2010, just look at the difference in the 2.

the problem is not nigerian government. the problem is nigerian citizens. if you build this in nigeria students will steal everything stealable and go and sell it. just the other day students broke into a school and stole all the expensive computers and sold it for 10,000 naira each. then you have those stealing cables that supply light. in naija you cant provide nice infrastructure for a citizenry that is full of thieves. they will steal it all.

i think i need to relocate to ghana. many black americans there too

U really understand the situation at hand and there is no other way u could ve put ur points across more succinctly than the way u ve done. Our education now lacks quality and its all quantity.. Some countries in Africa ve very few universities that re designated by the different discipline of life e.g kwame. Nkuramh university of science and technology .But here we would rather play politics with everything just like the past administration sited some mushroom universities in some geopolitical zones to score political points which in itself was not a bad idea provided they re well equipped ...

In countries where there are no resources, the students can be taxed heavily for it. But not Nigeria...definitely not Nigeria.
