Thanks bigfrancis21, its M.A History. and is it possible to secure Graduate assistantship without writing TOEFL? the reason why I asked is that a couple of schools I mailed about being taught entirely English said I need not write TOEFL, but according to what have been reading to far on this thread, its like we have to write TOEFL before we can be offered graduate assistantship

It depends on the school really. Many schools will waive the TOEFL requirement for you but may have you take their own internal university English language test especially if you get a teaching assistantship (that involves speaking English). The types of GA that needs proof of English fluency most times are the teaching assistantship and, to a lesser extent, the research assistantship. Like I said, they may waive TOEFL for you for admission purposes and maybe also grant you a GA but you may be required to take an internal English language test should you get a TA type of GA especially upon arrival in the US.

How old are you? Are you over 25? If no I would have recommended going for another bachelors degree (applying to both a community college and a university, obtaining your visa with the university and transferring to the CC upon entry into the US and starting school there), however one's chances of getting the US student visa for an undergraduate student over 22/23 are slimmer. If you were to go for a graduate program, then your best bet would be to convert your transcript using WES (the most favorable conversion tool ever). Someone I know recently converted and his GPA on the Nigerian scale is 1.99/5.0, which came out to be approximately 2.6/4.0, thus making him eligible to apply to US schools with 2.5/4.0 minimum GPA requirement, schools such as Bowie State University, Morgan State University, etc. Your 1.75/5.0 may come out to be at around 2.5/4.0 but you can be sure if you use WES conversion tool online to confirm that and if it does reach 2.5/4.0 then thank your lucky stars that you do have a chance at graduate studies here in the US. You need to have a copy of your transcript for this. I strongly recommend taking the GRE exam to boost your academic profile as your very low GPA isn't helping you at all. Goodluck.

Nice and polite response. I can't help not feeling that some people are deliberately being arrogant here. IMO It's best you ignore a question if you feel it's dumb

Would it be advisable applying to a college instead of a university , won't that be a RED FLAG during visa interview?

I guess you're talking about a community college (AS degree) because a college is a univerisity and grants BS, MS and Doctorate degree.

I'm trying to understand your figures here.
How is it possible that as your reduce the base, the GPA rises? Shouldn't they move in tandem?

From your estimation, 1.75/5.0 will equal a perfect 3.0 on a 3.0 scale.

You can still use your debit card even if the site states credit card. The only difference is that your debit card must be fully funded unlike credit card.

while its good to be suppoortive it also important to be realistic..... 1.75 gpa out of 5 , there is no need spending money on WES for that transcript.....check online calculator and see what it converts to in 4.0 before you spend any money ....if its less than 2.0 it will almost be impossible to get any admission with that. ......i see the only remedy is to start a fresh without using that transcript

no amount of play or unseriousness should result in that gpa score if you want to demostrate you are academically inclined for a next phase .
Well, some dude commented about his friend who had similar scores after calculating through WES. Well, I still personally don't believe she could be admitted into grad school with that cgpa and for her intended course, but miracles do happen, cos 2:5 gpa is even quite low for undergrad schools in the states.

Like the person with a 1.75/5 cgpa, she will have lots of D and E that may be converted to C and D. This could be the source of the little increase in converted cgpa but still with that, it will be a very low cgpa on a scale of 4.

I do not think I implied that in any of my posts above. 1.75/5.0 may come out to be around 2.5/4.0. Which is because, F grades are not included as part of the WES-evaluated CGPA, also all our Es are converted to C on the US scale, our Ds to C+, our Cs to B, our B to B+ and A remains A, which tends to bump up your final WES CGPA by a few points after evaluation. That is the official WES evaluation scale and why WES remains the most favorable of all evaluation scales.

Those with lower GPAs on our Nigerian scale (results that have more of Cs, Ds, Es and Fs) tend to see more bump ups in their US-evaluated GPAs compared to those with higher GPAs on our scale (their results have more of As, Bs and Cs etc.), because of the more points the change from E to C, D to C+, C to B gives compared to B to B+, A remains A, etc. I hope that makes sense.

Ya, the exclusion of F grades from WES CGPA evaluations and the upgrades of our C, D and E results to B, C+ and C respectively make their conversion more favorable.

@lonelyhrt...do not be discouraged yet. If you have a copy of your transcript already with you, you can do the WES evaluation yourself to see if the final comes out to at least 2.5/4.0, before you go ahead and pay for the official evaluation. Here is how you do it:

any A you have still remains A = 4 points
your B becomes a B+ = 3.33
your C becomes a B = 3.00 points
your D becomes a C+ = 2.33
your E becomes a C = 2 points
your F still remains an F = 0 (but do not include any failed courses as part of your calculation, only the years that you passed them).

The rest of the CGPA calculation is as usual.

A 3-unit course you made a C in (the C is now a B on the US scale = 3 points) now becomes 3 units * 3 points = 9 grade points.
A 2-unit course you made a D in now becomes C+ = 2.33 = 2 * 2.33 = 4.66 grade points
A 2-unit course you made an E in now becomes C = 2 points = 2 * 2 = 4.00 grade points and so on.

As usual, sum up all your grade points, and divide by the total number of units you did from first year to final year (excluding the units for all failed courses), that should give you your CGPA on the 4-point scale. Do the conversion and let us see if it comes up to 2.5/4.0, and if it does, congratulations. You may now proceed to the official WES evaluation.

In addition to Bowie State University and Morgan State University, I know two other schools that have 2.5/4.0 as minimum GPA requirement for bachelors degree that could admit you for Masters. Do not give up hope yet but you will have to be up and doing about it. Masters in Pharmacology with a 2.50/4.00 GPA may not be too feasible and I strongly advise that you go for similar but less-competitive health courses just so that you get admitted and get in the US and you could try changing your course after first semester of study in the US (provided you make a 3.0/4.0 GPA in your first semester). It is doable but you gotta work hard for it.

Yes you can. Be sure to schedule a date well in advance enough to accommodate the arrival of your I-20, give about 2 to 4 weeks in advance if you can. The two pieces of info you need from your I-20 are your SEVIS ID and SEVIS school code which you can tell your school international student office to email to you to enable you schedule a visa interview date while you await the arrival of your I-20.

No problem. Simply walk into any GT bank nearest to you with your international passport and $160 F1 visa fee in hand (in naira equivalency, the US embassy uses N400 exchange rate I think, not sure) and make your payment before the 3pm cut-off time.

Is your visa interview for Fall 2017 or Spring 2018?
