If only you knew about Chess.

Femi is not in the top 1000. He is rated number 6,974th in the world. His rating is 2275. Compare that to the rating of the least person in the top 100, Anton Korobov who is rated 2652.

To be world champion, he has to have a rating of at least 2700, qualify for a candidates tournament (only 8 people qualify), win the candidates tournament and then play and win a match (12 games) against the reigning champion.

He will never be world champion. Even wonderkids like Richard Rapport and Wei Yi would probably never be world champions and they are in the top 50 in the world.

This is chess not football where upsets reign.

10 years ago, Carlsen was already a grandmaster and we all knew him.

Femi is not even the best in Nigeria o.

Besides, he is too old to devote so much time to chess. And no, he can't make top 1000. Chess nor be play play o.

I am not hard on him or anything. I am just trying to put things straight. Like I said, you don't follow competitive chess. Even Femi Balogun would laugh if you say he will become world champion. he hasn't even won NBL o.

We knew carlsen 10 yrs ago lol...

The point is that nowadays if you're not yet a GM by at least 22, just forget it lol...

He's 30 and not an IM yet, there are 15 year old GMs.. Anish giri, caruana, wesley so, wei yi, those guys are young...

Anand is getting old but has been a consistent challenger for very long time...

Its not like those days where you can learn chess at an old age and still thrive (blackburne learnt chess at 18 i think but was still referred to as a coffee house player cos of his inconsistencies)...

Nowadays if you are 20 and not yet a GM... Hmm..

I love chess but I'm not really good at it, reason being I grew up in an environment where no one plays it.

Guys in the house, is it possible for a grown up to learn it and be really good at it? Can anyone recommend tutorial centres/apps/books one can use to help with the learning...

I'd really appreciate a response. smiley

lol..Mission impossible,, chess is a game of tactics and strategy not luck.. How can he beat a man who had a draw with Kasparov at the age of 13?

If he really drew with Kasparov at such a tender age then he is a prodigy because the name Kasparov used to send fear down the spines of many a chess player.he was once made to play against a computer that was specifically designed to defeat him bt to the chagrin of many ,Kasparov still defeated the computer and a much faster computer(Deep Blue) was designed and to which he finally lost.

Day 2 is upon us for Game 2 of the ongoing FIDE world chess championships

For the benefit of those who didnt follow yesterday, Oluwafemi Balogun of Nigeria played World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway. He resigned after 37 moves as black following some slow crushing play by Magnus. Femi plays as white today in game 2 and we hope he has some novelties up his sleeves.

Best of luck to him

Game to start in a couple of moves. From the little history we can find on Balogun's games. he seems to favour the kings indian as white.
As usual expect Carlsen to avoid early crisis in the opening and play quietly in the beginning.

His focus are more on the middle game where his strategic and positional prowess will come to light.

Lets see how Femi performs!!
Re: Magnus Carlsen Vs Femi Balogun - Chess Cup Match 2017 by yorex2011: 12:04pm On Sep 04, 2017
As expected Femi begins with Nf3 - The Reti's opening , this opening leads to the kings indian via a bishop fianchetto on the kingside.

This move is attributed to Richard Reti who was a proponent of hypermodern chess which suggests that the battle for the center should not be fought directly with pawns but from the flanks via bishops and knights.

Another popular proponent of hypermodern chess was Aaron Nimzowitch who was widely regarded as the father of hypermodern chess
