UPCOMING EVENT - NATIONAL FRIENDS OF CHESS FESTIVAL 2017

The 2017 edition of the National Friends of Chess Festival will be coming up on Thursday 29th of September to 2nd of October, 2017 at the Chevron recreation center, Gbagada Lagos. It will be in two categories (Fide rated 2000 and above and those below 2000 "fide and unrated".) 

Both categories will be 7 rounds and FIDE rated with the time control for an entire game to be 90 minutes plus 30 second increment per move from move 1 with 2 games per day on the 29th, 30th and 1st and a single game on the 2nd of October. There will be no walkover time.

The RATED section will be open to players with a FIDE rating over 2000, players with a FIDE identification number and also players who have a FIDE rating less than 2000 who so desire to play in the section. The UNRATED section will be open to player not rated or players with a FIDE rating of less than 2000. 

The following category of players will be the only ones entitled to win more than one prize, players rated under 2100 , all female players and all unrated players on the FIDE list of September 2017. All other players will win the largest amount due to them and the next in line takes the smaller. amount.

There will be a weekly update of participants and daily from 10 days to the start of the event.

After payment please send an email tonigeria.foc@gmail.com, stating your name, the category you want to play and which account you paid into. You would get a reply within 24-48 hours. If you CPAN dues into either account, you will need to send an email tocpannigeria@gmail.com notifying CPAN of the fact that CPAN dues have been paid.

The player rated under 2100 with the best score will win 25,000naira. Also, the player with a rating of 1750 and under with the best score will win 15,000naira while the best unrated player will win 10,000naira.

All prizes will be paid by electronic transfer latest by the 3rd of October however all the win bonuses will be paid at the venue hopefully before the start of the next round.

CPAN dues are a minimum of 6000 naira a year for adults and run from the day of payment for a year ie if you pay on the 17th of march 2017 it expires on the 16th of march 2018 and the main benefits for membership is a reduction of entry fees for both CPAN and Friends of Chess events. if you want more clarity on the CPAN dues you can either send an email to cpannigeria@gmail.com or call 08174707897.

Players who will participate are advised to dress decently to the venue and are expected to behave in an orderly manner. There will be a junior tournament for kids aged between 5 to 8,and 9 to 12.

# I was following some comments a while ago about the game between Carlsene and Femi, many opinions there are Femi is good than his rating (rating comes based on the number of games played). Some even wished he progress to the next round. He's really a big trouble for Carlsene.

the recent f3 move by femi chasing white's bishop could be a problem for him as he has shut his bishop off temporarily

black is beginning to win space and f4 is a threat

Whites problems are beginning to compound....being constricted like a boa, his game is very very passive, which is not good for a player using white

He has given himself some breathing space

Femi was given serious problems. I predicted that Carlsen will try to bury Femi's bishop and then reroute his own to b6 as soon as he played f5.

That e5 square must remain guarded, so Femi should not be tempted to push his d pawn, he can reroute his bishop to a more active square via f1
