The Senate on Tuesday passed the N152 billion 2017 budget of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
Approving the report of its Committee on Finance, the Senate approved N75.8 billion as personnel cost, N46 billion for overhead and N31 billion indicating 20.33 percent.
The personnel budget of the agency increased from N51.8 billion in 2016, to N75.8 billion.
“This is due to the planned recruitment of 700 additional staff in 2017 and salary review by 30percent budget to approval by Salary, Wages and Income Commission,” the report read.
The FIRS has a projected revenue of N4.9 trillion in its 2017 budget.
The lawmakers also approved N270.5billion 2017 budget of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) which has a projected revenue of N288.7billion in the same year.
This is in addition to the approval of N161.9 billion for the Nigerian Maritime Admistration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) with a projected revenue of N161.9 billion.
Senate President Bukola Saraki who presided over the session, said it is necessary for revenue generating agencies to live up to their mandates.
This, he said, would reduce the need for borrowing by the Federal Government, adding that the Senate would do its part to ensure that the agencies live up to expectations.
He also expressed concerns about the extra-budgetary expenditures made by some revenue generating agencies.
The upper legislative chamber refused to approve the budgets of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), insisting that it would scrutinise the reports of the Committees on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions as well as those of Petroleum Upstream, Downstream and Gas.
Recall that in a leaked letter to President Muhammadu Buhari dated August 30th, 2017, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, had accused the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Maikanti Baru, of awarding contracts worth over $25 billion without board’s approval.
The Senate also asked the National Automotive Design and Development Council to stop further spending on capital expenditure until the Council appears before its Committee on Industries for budget defence.

Ermm:
The Senate yesterday approved N146 billion for the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in 2017 with N975 million provided for cleaning and fumigation service.
The approval followed consideration of the report of Senate Committee on Finance chaired by Senator John Enoh during plenary session yesterday.

The service got the Senate nod to spend N1.5bn on generator fuel cost, N650m for motor vehicle fuel cost, N750m for refreshment and meals, N2.750bn for publicity advert and taxpayers education, N 1.3bn for welfare packages (in 2016, the service got N530m for this), and N120m for sporting activities.
The Senate slashed down the N1.750bn proposal for the purchase of vehicles to N1.5bn and inserted N200m for what it tagged annual budget expenses and administration.
On social benefits, the Senate approved N700m for reward for outstanding service, N50m for death benefits. The service is to spend N2.1bn for both local and foreign grants and contributions.
The Senate also approved N1.3b for utility charges which include electricity, telephone, internet, satellite water and sewage charges.
Our correspondent reports that the FIRS budget has already been passed by the House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, the Senate has stepped down the budget of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sugar Development Council, Industrial Training Fund, Standard Organization of Nigeria, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) among others for further legislative actions. I have not been commenting on this thread lately. However, I spoke with a Deputy Director this afternoon and according to him "Nothing has been done about the recruitment, applications received are enormous" I don't know whether the enormous application is part of the reason for the delay. note: I quoted him verbatim.

According to rumors peddled during the concluded Federal Civil Service Commission recruitment, Npower volunteers were sidelined during the shortlisting of names. If the rumor is true,it means also that many Npower volunteers will also be sidelined in this one also.

I wonder why they didn't send people mails. What if one's phone wasn't available at the time they put a call to one's line. Will that mean the end to the person's application journey?
