1) What's wrong with Oliver Twist?

2) Eedris was never one of Nigeria's top rappers. He achieved success as part of the group Remedies (and people criticised his style when he was with Remedies) and he didn't achieve much success when he went solo (apart from Mr Lecturer which was appreciated for its theme, rather than his prowess at rapping).
Now I know music is truly subject to our perceptions. Where I hear cacophony, you hear angels singing.

grin I studied music, I read music, I play musical instruments, I understand music and I've got an eclectic taste in music.

I love classical music, rap, calypso, highlife, juju, fuji, ragga, reggae, house, electro, chutney, soca, akpala, kwaito, euro-pop, disco, R&B, soul and a host of other genres of music. The only musical style that I was skeptical about was jungle, but I do love Jungle Is Massive.

This song is absolutely perfect. There is not a single flaw in it. It is the most perfect song that I know. Everything was perfect. From the arrangement (Quincy Jones is a genius!) to the video, the tuxedo (I wanted that tuxedo), basically everything was perfect.

This song was my introduction to Michael Jackson (the solo artist). Yeah, I had heard ABC and all the other songs, but this was my proper introduction to Michael Jackson.

This song was released during the disco era and I absolutely love disco music. The strings were out of this world.

Mary J Blige's Alright video was inspired by this video.

Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough (1979).

Ok. It's time for African boogie.

Words can't describe how wonderful this song is. You need to listen to it yourself.

Bunny Mack - Let Me Love You (1981)

@ naptu

Thanks for the YouTube video @naptu

Despite being from Sierra Leone, Bunny Mack
massively rocked the Nigerian airwaves in the very early
80s along with Kris Okotie and London-born
Jide Obi who both finished from UNN.
Bunny Mack and Kris Okotie even went on a nation-wide
tour together.

Bunny Mack's "Let Me Love You" was massive.
I couldn't get enough of it then.

I remember the hugely successful OFEGE [Dapo Olumide who was
the former MD of Aero Contractors and his other School Boy Band
members from St. Gregory's College, Obalende, Lagos ].
They released the massive albums "Try and Love" in 1973 and
"Last of the Origins" in 1976.

I remember when we had a reunion (in 2008 or 2009). This song came on and there was a 70 year old man who couldn't control himself anymore. He just had to dance.

CHECK OUT THE RHYTHM ON THIS SONG! I haven't even gotten to the excellent guitar playing, just check out the rhythm!

Now, for those of you that don't know, (1) these were secondary school kids. They were students at St Gregory's College when they released this track (2) This song was done in 1974. (3) They played the instruments themselves.

Now, just listen to this song.

I didn't know that YouTube has these songs uploaded in the achives.

Ofege as a spirit for me will never die. I still have a 40 kobo [U.K. price of 50pence] November 1976, Vol. 71 Nigerian Edition
copy of TRUST magazine with their pictures on the front cover
which featured a story on how they were having problems with their Music Manager [Mr. Odion
Iruobe]/
management at EMI Records over financial matters and they requested for a Range
Rover which was not granted after they had mad a lot of money from album
sales worth over N500,000 every year [The
Nigerian Naira was stronger than the
British Pound Sterling in 1976/77 based
on the exchange rate].

"Nobody Fails" was huge and I remember even as late as
1979/1980 the song with "Whizzy Ilabo" were
still being played as if they were freshly made.

My JVC Turntable from the 70s is not functioning again
but I still have it. grin

To listen to those vinyl albums again, I'll have to buy
a new one from either Amazon or eBay - and I will do just
that. Some of these equipment can still be purchase
online along with 60s/70s/80s vinyl albums.

Some of my vinyls have bad scratches on the surface
and are due for replacement because they are classics
like some of my 1970s Fela and Ofege albums.

Thanks to this thread and YouTube - we can still listen to some
of the classic songs again without turntables in the meantime. grin

PS: I don't blame your dad for having Ofege among his favourites.
It shows he has great taste in good music.

Aha! I've finally cleared up the confusion. I remember that this group was called Skyy Port. That's the name that is in my memory. But nobody online calls them Skyy Port. They are called Skyy. So where did I get the name Skyy Port from?

Well, Skyy Port is actually the name of this album.

Words can't describe how much I love this song.

(I think they also came to Nigeria).

Skyy - Here's To You (1980).

I've got a confession to make. I didn't know the lyrics of this wonderful song when it was released in 1980, so what I used to sing was

I know Farridah.

grin

Then I graduated to "I know Korea", before I eventually got the lyrics.

This was one of those watch night songs.

You see, although there were power cuts back then, it was quite rare for them to last more than 5 hours. The power was usually back after one or two hours. So, if there's a power cut that has gone on for more than 5 hours (especially if they don't bring back the electricity before nightfall) then we'll know that there's a major fault.

Old Man would bring out his battery powered radio and you'll hear this kind of songs. Then they'll announce that there's a fault and tell us exactly when electricity would be restored. And they always restored it when they said that they would.

I can't find the album version, but this is the closest to it.

Nigerian boogie. There's another song (by Jide Obi) that should be with these two, but I can't remember the name of that song.

I can still see the Gold de Kanterbrau mugs dancing.

naptu2:
Memories. Drive music. #Audi100 #MercedesBenz230

These were two of the biggest pop stars in Nigeria and, interestingly, they were roommates at the University of Nigeria (along with a third musician who I don't consider to be on their level).

I should do a versus series with their videos, but there aren't enough of their videos on YouTube.

I Need Someone is Chris Okotie's biggest hit, but, believe it or not, it's not on YouTube. I don't think it's his best song, but it was his biggest hit.

Kill Me With Love was Jide Obi's biggest hit and it is on YouTube. I don't think it was his best song, but it was his biggest hit.

So, I'm still going to post two of the biggest songs of 1981.

Unfortunately the record skips a couple of times in the first video (vinyl). The second song was also used in a beer advert in the early and mid '80s and I can almost picture the beer mugs dancing anytime I listen to the song.

Ok, I'll be fair. The other guy wasn't bad. It's just that I didn't consider him to be on the same level as Kris Okotie and Jide Obi. His music was ok, but I didn't consider him to be a serious musician. I remember him more for the weird way his name is spelt, his fleet of pimped W123 Mercedes Benz cars and the (girls) names that he gave to his songs. We used to tease a particular girl with his songs.

Then I heard his songs in the early 2000s and they are not half bad. In fact, they are quite good.

So here are two of the best. (The inscription says 1981, but I could have sworn that it was actually released in 1984/85).

Felix Lebarty - Ifeoma (1981).

Thanks for the YouTube links of Jide Obi

I just got to find out early today online that the
