You’ll see Top 20 most beautiful musicians, top 20 richest athletes, Top 1000 Universities by webometrics and so on. What I find perplexing, however, is that Nigerians hardly top any of these lists except that of the richest pastors. Our musicians are not there among the world’s richest. Neither are our Sportsmen and women, actors and Entrepreneurs. On the world's 20 richest pastors list we have at least five Nigerians.
I find this fact difficult to process. Why does a nation as poor as ours have the world's richest pastors? Does Nigeria have more Christians than other nations? The answer is NO, we don't. Below are countries with the highest Christian population from the most populous to the least populous.

Five of the countries on this list have more Christians than Nigeria. And their citizens are averagely richer too. According to available statistics the average churchgoers in these countries make more money than their Nigerian counterparts, yet their pastors are still not as wealthy as ours. Perhaps God has a soft spot for Nigerian Christians? Well, if he does, why then is he not also showering his blessings on church goers? When God blessed Solomon materially did he not also extend it to the whole of Israel?

The explanation to this is quite simple. Perhaps it is lurking somewhere in your subconscious because you are afraid to think it out to yourself. Let me put it out there in black and white. OUR PASTORS ARE CORRUPT CRIMINALS! You probably suspected I was going to say this. And yes, I have. We are a corrupt society. Just remember that both your pastors and politicians minister to the people, and while the politicians manage taxes the pastors manage tithe. While the people remain in abject poverty, these religious and political ministers own private jets. And both of these two groups have individuals who own investments in discrete tax havens. Only a mind imprisoned by the commitment to protect any of these groups would not draw the conclusion that they are criminals. With the help of God’s word and your money a private jet in the sky is just a stepping stone.

Why is your pastor scamming you? I will answer that like the Nigerian I am- they say we love to answer questions with questions. Why do police men take bribe? Why are your politicians stealing tax payer’s money? Why are there thousands of young Nigerians on the internet scamming people? The answer is BECAUSE THEY CAN. Why did people sell their fellow humans in the trans-Atlantic slave trade? Now we all exspect Pastors and Christians to help the poor, CAN THE POOR HELP THE POOR , CAN YOU GIVE AWAY WHAT YOU DONT HAVE ?

If God wants his children to be wealth are the pastors not part of the children?

Excellent piece. The use of tithes is to meet the needs of the church members and also the leaders. However, some churches seem to neglect the members and focus on the leaders. This is not good enough.

The three different types are as follows:

1. THE LEVITICAL TITHE (sacred to God).

Leviticus 27:30
And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's: it is holy unto the Lord

This tithe is used for the work of service in the place of worship and also for the welfare of the workers there.

Numbers 18:21-25
21 And, behold, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel for an inheritance in return for their service which they serve, the [menial] service of the Tent of Meeting.


2. THE TITHE OF THE FEAST (Deut. 14:22-27).(daddy freeze beer boozing tithe )

Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always.


3. THE TITHE FOR THE POOR (Deut. 14:28, 29). (Every 3 years)
This is done once in very 3 years . It is shared among the poor . While the main annual tithe still runs .

At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates: And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest

The first tithe, the one we trace back to Abra­ham (Gen. 14:18-20), is the sacred tithe, given to the Levites and priests for their service to the temple and the congregation in the Old Testa­ment. This is the tithe we continue to give under the priesthood of Melchizedek in the New Testa­ment. It is the tithe consecrated to God and the furtherance of the gospel and has, therefore, validity for all believers in Christ.

Paul was clear enough .

1 Corinthians 9:13-14
Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel

Now some may say Paul didn't accept support . That's no big deal . He didn't accept support in Corinth because of their carnality . But he accepted support from some other churches . Same goes for pastors today . Most pastors serve voluntarily. They don't receive support . Over 9% of pastors in Deeper life ,Redeem ,CEC, winners are serving voluntarily. They have their own jobs . In fact one of the criterial by which you are sent out is to first have a good job . Except only few who may be required to serve full time and they may have to resign from their job. To get support from church . Church tithe is used to pay workers , church rent , maintainance , equipment ,projects , generator fuel. Chair hire etc and other expenditures. The pastor is not the owner of church money . Every ministry has structure by which money is handled . A pastor in redeem cannot dip his hand into church account . There are approvals from head quarters for expenditure. Not what bloggers online post who don't even go to church

We are not giving tithes as commanded under the law . Our tithing dates to Abraham before the law came . And that it why the other kinds of tithes were not emphasized .

I dont know why the Nigerians are obsessed with pastors. Some of these Work and earn Salaries only at month end give a good percentage back to church members in form of giving in cash or food.

I have witness this year alone, about 3 people in my district whom my Group Pastor empowered with 20k each to start small scale business. And he had about 4 district under him, yet I dont know what he will be giving out to those one. One special thing about him is that he wasn't a Salary earner, so definitely he is not living on budget. MIND YOU NO PASTOR IN MY CHURCH IS UNDER ANY SALARY SCHEME, Even the General Overseer

The issue of tithing is personal, why should it be any one headache.

You know my first reaction to this as I read through was almost one of childlike acceptance with an inconsideration for the slightest chance of being gullable or another casualty of a fleeceable motive especially with the manner in which it was articulately presented (not that I expected anything less considering the sensitivity of the topic).

It sounded like; pleading a case for me, an advocation for justice, an agitation against corruption well I can go on and on.
But then it sounded empathetically convincing not until I realize how indiscriminate the broad bias in perspective his write up tend to suggest as I find lots of assumptions with respect to how church structures and operations run.

That you don't know, are aware, understand or agree with how the internal Structure of a system runs shouldn't and doesn't imply that all is criminal that craws thus.
Lets assume you are correct (putting into perspective the kind of society we live in), I still would have an objection to your thoughts being indiscriminately bias in perspective because is of its broad assumptions which was game on until I thought of my own pastor and a couple of pastors I know and have met personally who give their all in pursuant of their heavenly calling just like the disciples of Jesus

Pastors who give everything for what they believe, paying all the bills to run the church; staff salaries, church rents, sound equipments (which are very expensive by the way because that's a part of my profession), even paying bills for members welfare like providing food support, school fees, hospital bills in times of emergencies etc.
You see these an more makes me question the motive and that is where my concern lies.

The church is and will always be the ground and pillar of truth so it's important we consider before addressing it being a God ordained institution irrespective of anybody's opinion.

Lol , you guys are crooked. Don’t you understand that any money for God is supposed to be spent entirely on the needy and not on Pastor salaries or the building of more temples ( business expansion ).

And if you are under the law of tithing you are by inference under the whole law which according to
Paul means you are under a curse !

God does not bless because of tithe , if that were so most people in western nations will be poor , instead they seem to be more blessed than most Nigerians who pay their mythical tithe.

The bottom line is this , in the early church the title Pastor simply meant elder and it was always practised in plurality , that is , no single person was in control of a particular church , the local church ( not denominations ) was governed by elders who also had other Jobs as a means to taking care of their families for Paul who was a tent maker said that he that cannot take care of his family is worse than an infidel and let him that does not work also not eat (applicable especially to elders who were supposed to be role models .

God never purposed offerings and the likes for the payout of bills or buying new buildings and expanding churches , it was always meant to help the needy just as was clearly practised in the early church.

The system that exists today was not ordained by God , it is a scam.
