GRE is for Graduate schools and not undergraduate, if you are going to the embassy with an Undergraduate I-20 it’s better not to bring up your GrE or you’ll trigger more questions that’ll throw you off balance

NJ is a very expensive state to live in. Which is why i live in neighbouring PA 20 mins outside of central NJ. Also the school is in Jersey city, which is only separated from NYC by the Hudson. Those areas are even more expensive as New Yorkers live there and commute to NYC. I would advise that you stay in the dorms your first year. You can try living off campus in your second year once you have a better idea of the costs of living and whether you have the financial capacity to bear it. Living off campus is not as easy as you might think. Rent is all on you, food, utilities (gas, water, electric), house repair (if your landlord doesn't include this in the lease - i needed to repair a dishwasher today, it was going to cost me $175 flat rate just to take a look at it! undecided), transportation etc. Americans do not joke with bills, there is no begging... they are paid on time or you get kicked out.

Wow this is super helpful. Thanks! I better start reconsidering living on campus then. But then again campus living is like $5800 per annum that's roughly 2.something million naira which is a whole lot to consider lol. Does it help if I have someone I can stay with like a share a house with or something so that bills can be split.

If I could get 5800 pa rent I would jump at it. I’m going to Vanderbilt and I’m looking at no less than 10k pa.

Looks like you've done some research of your own... which is good. At $5800/annum, that boils down to $480/month. That is just rent alone and does not include gas/electric - which could be up to $100/month (or ask your landlord, some of them cover this for you but in Jersey city, i very much doubt it). Add at least $30/month for internet, water should be in your lease so you should be ok. A cell phone should run you a minimum of $60/month (you'll want the fancy iphone of course grin). So for rent and utilities alone, you're up to $670/month. For jersey city, you really should not need a car at least your first year, there is better public transportation (buses and trains, there are daily trains to NYC, lucky you!), so that saves you having to buy a car, gas (at least $100/month) and auto insurance (another ~$50/month). However, public transportation isn't that great in the less populated areas of NJ so if you want to visit those, you'll need your own car.

Bottomline, get friends to share an apartment with, that cuts down on your rent and you all share utilities. It's the most common way college kids can afford living outside campus. I always advise dorms the first year. Aside from the cost (a lot of which you won't be used to), you also need time to acclimatise to the culture - where and how to pay for stuff, best places to get groceries, American attitudes to money, living space etc. foods. You don't lose anything by taking that time to find folks that you can comfortably live with and then plan your move off campus.

If this was back in my hey days, i would have volunteered my services! grin But as a child of God now, i can only pray for you. All the best!

Lol I mean... Yeah iPhone obviously. This is really good advice though. I definitely will go for on campus now. Then research my options to move off campus in the following year. We could meet up.....im a child of God too. We children of the most high need to be close to each other. Thanks! I'll be sure to let you know my progress.

And I thought Republican-controlled states are supposed to be the “low-cost.” That is just not the case in Nashville.

The politics does not really matter. Any really large city with a high number of rich/upper middle class folks is bound to be expensive. Nashville is the Hollywood for country music. For cheaper states, i'd try Texas. Very cheap to live there!
