Oh I see. There are so many opportunities now in IT. It's a shame Nigeria is in disarray now. We could have been tapping into this goldmine instead of India. When you call all these service providers, their call centres are all located in India and you can't even understand half of what they are saying. Jobs that Nigerians can do eloquently! Anyway, oyinbos don't trust us with their data because of these yahoo boys and most importantly, NEPA.

IT awaits you! Godspeed..

Thanks sir..will join you guys soon.. grin

I’m one of several silent members of this forum and prefer to read than comment unnecessarily. I’m impressed with your adventure so far. As Safiaaa suggested, a meetup in London would be a good idea.
PS: not going to be in the UK in the latter part of Jan ‘18.

I’d like to ask you a question about something you mentioned on page 22 but would prefer not to derail UKMigrant’s thread.

Grammar school is a system where the best students that pass 11 plus exams, are admitted into Grammar Schools.

Grammar schools are the next best thing to private secondary schools. Standards are very high, discipline is very high etc etc etc

And the beauty of it all, it's free............. Uniforms and materials are not cheap, but it's a better trade off......

Great. Duly noted. Need to start coaching the little ones to be brilliant be dt.

Your earning power determines your propensity to save, minus current and recurrent expenses.......

Based on the £2100 payment pcm example, oblige us with a savings breakdown.........

Single Guy living in London
Renting a room in a HMO all bills incl - £550pcm
Travel - £170
Feeding - £200 pcm
Clothing - £100pcm
Phone + Internet - £40pcm
Booze and Takeaway - £200 pcm
Total Expenses - £1260 pcm
Net Pay £2100pcm
Savings - £840pcm

Family Man living in London with Wife and 2 kids
Renting a flat in London - £900pcm
Gas and Electricity - £80pcm
Water - £33 pcm
Council Tax Band B - £105 pcm
Tv Licence - £13 pcm
Phone + Internet - £40pcm
Travel for 2 working adults - £340 pcm
Feeding - £400 pcm
Nursery for pre school kid (20 hrs/wk) - £480 pcm
Breakfast + After school club for school age kid - £100 pcm

Car Running Costs £200 pcm

Joint Net Pay for Man and Wife have to be at least £3041 to break even
Savings - £ ? pcm - depends on joint income of husband and wife

I know not every one in the UK lives in London but if you live in London you'll soon realise that London is quite expensive.

If you are a contractor with a good day rate and steady work then you will be able to save more because you will earn more but the work has to be steady to even out over the year.

Wow.

Thanks
LMay:
Please make the move.

400k in Nigeria won't offer you the following:

Security of life & property
Good healthcare
Fast emergency response
Stable govt policies
Good education for your children
Good opportunities for your children.
A system that works
Steady retirement benefits (Forget the retirement packages you're servicing at work. Look around, how many of our senior citizens who were top civil servants or top professionals in their hay days are currently getting proper retirement benefits that can support them & fund their mgt of old age related diseases?)

Heck, earning N4m per month in Nigeria will not even offer you a good accident free road.

For my family & I, our relocation is not money motivated. That is only a plus. All we want is a stable environment in which basic amenities are what they're called, basic! We want to be well & alive to raise our children. As a couple, we want to be alive & well to enjoy each other into old age. We don't want to save up for one year to buy a car & have it snatched by robbers in less than 5 minutes.

PLEASE complete the Auto mechanic training and if you can add carpentry / furniture making + barbing + electrician to it then if you decide to relocate to the UK at least you don't have to put up with any bad employer as you will have 4 seperate skills than can earn you a comfortable wage with the benefit of being self employed.

Some plumbers and carpenters here earn £120 per hour.

Handwork pays well here.

For ladies hairdressing is a nice way to earn money right in the comfort of their homes.

So I met a Ghana girl, yes I did grin

More like magic...

The first time we saw, we were immediately eying each other...

She came for some internship thingy... Being the only black person in my section of the office we caught each other's attention immediately!

I said hi to her on one occasion, she smiled back. She had the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. I could not act on my attraction cos its against "company policy"

We had a chat on work related stuff one day and she asked me where I'm from, and then she told me her parents are from Ghana but she grew up in London.

So we just do the hi hi everyday, I never had the guts to ask for her number.

Until I got home one day and was searching through my bag, lo and behold I saw a strange note. I opened it carefully and it says:

"I see the way you look at me, here's my number"

I didn't know how to act on this. This is the first time ever a lady is dropping me this kinda note, I didn't know whether to call. I was confused, didn't want to mess things up!

Maturity at its peak, it can never happen in Nigeria.

All these Nigerian girls with pride.

Enjoy your bae, and please keep us posted on the relationship of a thing cheesy

Things we have to endure living in a shared house. So far, these are the bullshits I have been enduring:

1. One of my housemates told me to please walk more slowly and gently while climbing stairs as it disturbs her downstairs.

2. One of the bottles of wine I kept in the fridge went missing, my fruits go missing too.

3. One told me to always close the kitchen door when cooking as the smell makes him uncomfortable.

4. A note was left by a housemate to keep the TV volume down between a certain time as she would be doing a nightshift and needed to sleep.

5. Another note on the kitchen sink by one that she doesn't share her mugs, plates and spoons.

6. Constant triggering of the fire alarms almost everyday depending on who is cooking.

7. Housemates not willing to clean the common areas.

8. Housmates ignoring you when they drive by even when they see you on the roadside in the rain.

9. One asked me, I heard you're some kind of professional, what do you really do

10. Most never remember my name grin

11. There is a whatsapp group for us, we're just four in the house, but no one responds to any questions you post on it. They're all whites by the way.

12. If you don't bring out your clothes from the washing machine on time, they just evacuate it and dump on a dirty surface for you rather than tell you even though you just saw each other seconds ago.

13. Waiting to use the bathroom especially in the mornings and skipping shower sometimes to avoid being late to work.

I'll add more if I can think of anything else.

So it's not all rosy cry

Wow! I don't think I can cope in such apartment

shop around for one bedroom or studio flat. it will cost you an extra £200 (max) per month in outgoings but at least you have your space to yourself.

a studio flat (sometimes called bedsit) will suit someone like you (working professional trying to save as much as possible) just fine.

another option is to look for a 2bed+2bathroom apartment and take the tenancy with a colleague. the only problem is that one party might decide to leave at any time and the other party will have to either end the tenancy or look for replacement flatmate

I can relate.
Nothing like having your own privacy.

But really, Ops housemates aren't 100% irrational as you have to be considerate of others....Night-shift workers, leaving your laundry in the washing machine, using other people's stuff...Take a hint, they don't really like Op, might want to work on your interpersonal skills, or they are all bad mates

to be fair, the housemates are not that bad.

nigerian food smells - we just don't know it.

my wife usually lights up one of those scented candles after cooking just to get rid of the lingering smell of oporoko, dried fish, iru, etc. grin sometimes she sprays airfresher. so i honestly don't blame the guy asking you to shut the kitchen door. another tip is to always ensure the extractor for the hob is on whilst cooking. have you being where Asian food (curry is being cooked). damn! the smell is no bad that it sticks to the wall, curtains, etc. grin

it is not unusual to feel uncomfortable about sharing your utensils with complete strangers.

fire alarm going off is normal thing na. grin that thing saves lives and homes. again, keep the extractor on the kitchen hob on while cooking and/or the kitchen window slightly open.

feel free to pop a note on the fridge's door asking people not to eat or drink what does not belong to them.

regarding your washing - set a timer or reminder to get it out from the machine.

at least you do not have flatmates smoking skunk or listening to reggae music at 10pm. grin
