That should be ur starting point

It depends on your direction... If you are headed for web development HTML is good. HTML is not a programming language it is a markup language just like XML

Hello, thanks for this thread. After reading, my hopes of becoming a programmer skyrocketed to the rocketed end. I always wonder how this applications function, and how they came to be. But I don't really get nice stuffs online. I studied microbiology, I want to learn from scratch. There are some language terminologies that was used along the thread like end lines, DUI., ND stuffs like that. I will be grateful if a link will be provided to get me started as an amateur beginner and also mentorship will be appreciated. I look forward to writing programs for games (I like games well) n do something useful for microbiologist with it.
Python is good for games.

A beginners trick I learned way too late in the game of learning to code: repetition repetition repetition

The biggest issue I've come across in learning to code is that no matter what tutorial I've tried, there simple were never enough examples to work through to become proficient in whatever I was learning at the time. When I bring this up, it's generally met with "you just want to be spoon fed" or "you need to build stuff! Go and build" by programmers.

I've learned how to fix this issue. It's extremely simple:

Take the last exercise you were shown/taught and repeat it three times.

1st iteration is to make sure you understand what the hell's going on and can repeat it, do you understand the functions, the loops, the getters, setters and constructs? You won't understand because you'll need to keep referring to your last attempt, hence doing it two more times.

2nd iteration is to do the same project again but this time without referring to old code at all. It's not about memorizing. It's about understanding what you want to do next and what tool you need to slap in your code to get there and knowing how to do it...well, a little memorizing comes in handy but at a certain point you're no longer memorizing and you're more just 'knowing it'. Can you clean up your code a bit? Can you DRY it out some?

3rd iteration is to build on it. Can you add another property to the Class? If it's HTML can you add 6 columns with images instead of just 2? Just add shit to the project with what you already know. Add stuff that you learned 2-3 lessons ago but haven't touched since then.

After doing an exercise three times you'll go from "Monkey See, Monkey Do" all the way to "Monkey Know!"

You're correct.
By utilising this technique one can make great progress

The best resources I've found for a beginner are these one here: http://inventwithpython.com/invent4thed/, http://inventwithpython.com/pygame
You can read the book online for free. You can also choose to buy the hard-copy on amazon.

It teaches Python in probably the most learner-friendly way. In fact, it teaches coding using several games as explained examples.

I hope you find it helpful.

No, I taught myself whatever it is I know about programming or the ICT field.
I read books. nobody tutored me. I have never even met an actual software developer before. most of my contact with developers have been virtually(online).

but this is a matter of how best an individual can learn using a certain medium.

studying programming by reading is always better considering that most of your life as a programmer, you will be looking at written text and sifting through documentations.
Reading to pass exam?
My friend you are not reading to practice or write exam. Javanian is right, you sounded like someone who learnt programming through school.

What applies to you might not apply to others.
Good luck. I hope you grabbed now since it's 4/5years now

I think to make yourself useful, employable in future with bright prospect, productive (as in quickly developing app with live usage) you should go the web way. By web-Way i mean Javascript/TypeScript ( Note TypecSript is a cleaner / superset / modernize / more-standard version of JavaScript.

Html5/Css /Javascript/Typescript is the future. As you can develop Hybrid Apps ( Either Mobile App on andriod or Ios, or Desktop App or WebSites ).

With that been said let me respond to your question in emphasis.
Python : Still used for most websites today but trust me its much more for scientific use than websites... I moved from Python to PHP and in my years of development, i do not think i used Python more than twice ( When i worked on imagery and satellite with Nigeria's Com-Sat1)
R: By R i guess you mean Ruby. I dont fancy this language because everything on this language is centered on the framework Ruby on rails. So what happens if you plan to develop a mobile app?.
VB: I have never been a fan. I think and believe its useless.
C#. I advise this to (c and c++).
C and C++. I believe they are just headache languages with memory issues and complexity in syntaxs. O the memory ish is so much an hell. I hate it.
Java: Old Jargon Leave it and Move to something productive with ease.

Do not get decieved that you need to not compare programming language. Some so called developers/ programmers will ask you to learn any. Some even go the route of advising you to learn fortran/ c. Dont listen to them. In most case on long run there is need for motivation which could be financial or in terms of seeing our products live with others using it.

Due to the numerous "i want to start programming, which language should i start with" threads on this board i decided to create a thread that will address this issue. I am not a wonderful writer and i won't say i know it all but i will try. I urge every one on this board to correct me where i err an also contribute in whatever way you can to make this thread worth it. I will try as much as possible not to be biased in this write up.

Hey guys, if you have passion in tech and don't really know where to start from and most of us thinks maybe writing code is a gift From God, We all know how this world operates, its just about PRINCIPLES or maybe you are not doing what you are supposed to do the right way.
Lemme introduce myself, Am an Android developer and full stack web developer, i have decided to show those who have passion in tech the right way and right materials to learn.
Making an app shouldn't be a big thing or maybe developing a responsive website. All you need is to know the materials and have knowledge about it so you could start becoming a freelancer or even self employed. You can join the whatsapp group chat to start your carrer the right way.
Don't worry about payment, Its a FREE class.

https:///BNZW6V2gXGv7oncbVcEJXn

Feel free to ask your questions, i will try and answer the ones i can my Ogas in the house will help me with those i can't answer

Please every Programmer should try as much as possible to check on this thread once in a while to help answer some questions Newbies would like to ask.
