texazzpete: I’ll explain just one more time. In Canada as a country unlike in Nigeria as a country where English is SOLELY the National Language The Lingua Franca is the English/French Languages which is why Canadian National Inscriptions are rendered in both languages. Now, the fact that the lingua Franca in Canada is as stated would not be reason to insist that English be spoken in Quebec! That is true Federalism! A visit to some places in America will not be liveable for a person who can’t do espanol! The fact that English Language is lingua Franca in Nigeria is no reason why a Federating State cannot demand that folks who wish to be educated or domiciled there must learn the language indigenous to that federating unit. This is more so that communication In English is not barred. 6 Likes |

PrecisionFx:You couldn't make sense of it, because it is not riddled with the lies and propaganda that you are fond of recycling. You believe the law is a fruitless exercise? Oya, apply to any Lagos state-owned tertiary institution and see if they would admit you, without a credit pass in Yoruba language. 5 Likes |

12inches1:Guy, I have lived, schooled and worked in the SW for years. In my secondary school, Yoruba was compulsory in JSII. The best student in Yoruba language at that time, was an Igbo girl called Chinwe! Some of us had asked the teachers to exempt those of us who were not from the SW, from the Yoruba language classes. We had almost succeeded, until Chinwe decided to foil our plans, by passing the course with flying colours. So the teachers were like "....if an Igbo girl can pass Yoruba language classes and exams, do the rest of you have two heads?" Na so di girl fall our hand, o! We had no choice, but to sit for the course. I didn't learn the language (just managed to cram a few sentences, lol!) , but I mastered all the curses and insults inside it, courtesy of my classmates! 1 Like |

vioment:Uncomfortable, in what sense? Since when have laws been created for the comfort of the masses? Were the tax laws created for your comfort? Were the toll gate fees designed for the comfort of your pocket? Guy, are you sure you are a Nigerian? In Anambra, Igbo language courses are compulsory in the 1st year, in some state-owned institutions. 2 Likes |

What more can I say? I am extremely disappointed to see my fellow Igbos on this thread wailing over Lagos - a Yoruba state. We have similar laws in the SE, so why are you idiots embarrassing our tribe on this thread? If the Yorubas like let them make their language compulsory from primary 1 to Phd level - it is not our business. As long as they do not tell us what to do in the SE. Please, stop this childish display of stupidity. I remember warning so of you that claim that Lagos is no man's land on this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/4188273/nndigbo-why-must-stop-saying I warned you that all you are doing is making sure that the Yorubas will becoming harsher with you in their land. Now u na no dey see? Some of us talk on this nairaland like it is not a PUBLIC forum. You think Yoruba lawmakers and leaders are not reading this comments? Think again! Its time we STOP acting like children and begin to strategize in a wise and smart way. 8 Likes 1 Share |

LaudableXX: Are you for real with this Anambra topic? I am against a compulsory non factor subject forced upon the students or masses. I haven't been paying attention if true. They can also be sued successfully. It is the job of every govt official to ensure a secure and comfortable environment. The govt should start thinking of making cases like that a case for state take over until a new election. |

vioment:Oga, read through this thread from beginning to end and you will get the proof you need that Anambra did the same thing. No tribe complained then, o! And how does the learning of Yoruba language make any citizen insecure?? Are you for real? For your information, there is freedom of choice. Federal tertiary institutions do not require a credit pass in Yoruba language, unlike Lagos state-owned institutions. So there are alternatives for those who do not want to go down that route of studying Yoruba language. So why the fuss?? 2 Likes |

Originalsly:Stop being melodramatic. It cannot bring about disintegration. Anambra and Imo enacted similar laws to promote the use of Igbo language in their state-owned schools, and it did not bring about disintegration. asuustrike2009:What do you mean by they don't have such laws in the South east? After a screenshot was posted to prove it, and ODVanguard also cited links to support the fact that Igbo is compulsory in Anambra and Imo primary and secondary schools? In fact, a failure in Igbo language course, means the student will not be promoted to the next class the following year! 4 Likes |

Odingo1: Levies from international airport and seaports go directly to the federal govt, and NOT to the states. Secondly, why are you wailing over this Odua Republic matter? Maka why? Do you want to become the president of their republic? JAMB will follow the admission guidelines given to it, by each respective school. Read JAMB prospectus very well. The same criteria does not always apply for the same courses, in all universities. The year I entered university, Obafemi Awolowo University required students to have a credit in English language and Literature if they wanted to study Political Science, while University of Ibadan and University of Lagos only required a credit pass in English language, but not in literature. 4 Likes |
