In this regard, some experts stated that whenever an individual moves in and out of the car during re-fuelling of his vehicle, he actually carries the charge of approximately 60,000 volts. Therefore, it is wise enough to leave the cell phone in the vehicle while going for its petrol filling.

For a fire to occur you need three things, a flammable source, oxygen and something with a flashpoint able to ignite the flammable source. In your cellphone only two things can cause that, a defective vibrator and a defective battery and even this are very minimal.

You can carry 60,000 volts around you but without a flashpoint it will never ignite anything.

Your loose battery terminals and car wiring are a greater risk, the lightning above the fuel pump is a greater risk.

The silk cloth you wear is a greater risk, even the thunder fire you you say is a greater risk.

Most phones this days are designed with anti static, petrol stations and LNG stations need to up their immediate environment safety standards and stop this lazy attitude of blaming cellphones as they major thing it does in a refill station is distraction.

well y'all remember that explosion at abulegba Lagos that year(many years ago) that claimed thousands of lives.... it was caused by a phone call and later boosted when people were vandalizing too.
but what I heard was the components in the oil have been reduced therefore it can't ignite explosion (don't know if that's true or myth either)

Yes... It can cause explosion .. Haven't u heard news of people who take phones close to gas cookers and gas cylinders and it exploded .... Also taking phone to the kitchen is dangerous .. Your phone emits a lot of waves

In as much as we are not going to carry a meter around to measure static charges, its is imperative to prevent every likely/potential medium that could lead to explosion. No use of cell phones, no smoking etc are just few to mention.

Also, why do they say, no use of phones in planes? Its not like the plane will blow up! It's all this little safety measures and precautions that prevents catastrophic incidents. Accident don't just happen! It builds up, and just a final trigger compounds it!
