Give me an inch, I'll take a mile

BISI - THE OTHER WOMAN CH 21

Holding her against his chest all felt right with the world. Through her half sleeve blouse he could feel her heart beating, in sync with the sobs from her throat. Her violet perfume settled his mind into a state of comfortable familiarity.  He would do whatever it took not to lose her he thought. With her hair sprayed across his chest he looked up to the sky, the white of the hospital ceiling obstructing his view. Does she suspect? Namdi wondered. Though it had only been two days since her, he knew how perceptive Zainab was. Returning his eyes to earth he watched the tear filled jewel in his embrace. No, there is no way she suspects a thing.

"Don't you dare die on me. Have you heard? Only I get to kill you! Foolish foolish man."

At a loss for words Namdi could only mumble sounds of comfort, holding Zainab tighter, the last of her tears absorbed by his bandages. Together they listened to the orchestra around them, seconds turning to minutes. Quieter than the hospitals I remember, a little strange without the sounds of other sick or dying patients Namdi thought. It feels like I'm forgetting something important. Before he could ponder deeper a voice intruded.

"Does it hurt?"

"Not too much."

"Where?"

"Well, my ribs for starters."

Zainab stared at the tear soaked bandages for a bit before her lips pressed against it, a red imprint evidence of her planted flag. Namdi's eyes involuntarily closed from the mixed signals, heart beat quickening.

"And here, above my left eye."

"Here?"

She could see the steri strips placed across a half inch suture. Reaching up she gently planted a kiss on the surgical tape.

"Here too; actually it hurts the most."

"Silly man, I see no bandage on your lips."

"It's an internal injury, you can ask the doctor. Scouts honor"

"Pshh, you were never a scout."

Tittering, a lacquered nail gently pressed against his lips on the suspected spot, shortly followed by her rosy lips, quietly silencing him. Namdi forgot it all, the world, his pain, his fears, drowned away by the taste of her as his heart raced. His hands reached for her waist, lifting her on top of his abs, hunger growing. Deeper and deeper they sunk into their kiss, the orchestra fading into the distance even as it grew in crescendo. Their gasps and moans were muffled, their only semblance of restraint. One by one the buttons to her blouse popped open, machinations of his over eager fingers. Impatient he reached up cupping her peaks before they were truly free, her pearly white teeth sinking into his lips.

"Ehem!"

Sharp, the sound cut through the border into the world Zainab and Namdi had created for themselves. A rude awakening for them who had been lost in each others desires. Namdi saw the intruder first, an advantage of his position. Zainab in a flurry of motion.

"Oh, ah... em... it's not what it looks like, she was... she was just administering first aid Doctor... Doctor... sorry who are you miss?"

"Doctor Oluwakemi, your attending physician."

100 posts mile stone Yay.

I'd like to apologize to the readers. The title says 'short' which was the original intent of the story but it seems to have grown beyond my initial goal and crossed that threshold; relativity aside.

Attempts to change the now misleading title has not borne fruit.

Thanks to, those who started the journey with me, those we picked up along the way, and those who shared this story with others. You are cherished and valued

Chapter 22 will be out on Wednesday, with a bit of luck

Death is hardest on the living

BISI - THE OTHER WOMAN CH 22

"Are you also here to administer first aid?"

A blush was born on the cheeks of the doctor but she quickly covered it.

"Your heart was racing setting of an alarm and your vital signs went flat. I'm surprised you didn't hear it"

"Well, we were kind of in the middle of something before your untimely entrance"

"I apologize for caring enough to not let you die."

"As long as I have enough money to afford the treatment right!"

Namdi retorted, his voice biting. Surprised at the complete 180, Doctor Oluwakemi took a step back, hands holding a clipboard up to her chest as a makeshift shield. The air chilled in the private patient ward.

"I think... I should find you another attending physician"

She mumbled, edging toward the door.

"Wait!"

Zainab, a single button still undone on her blouse, could see the hesitation behind the cat eye glasses the doctor wore.

"Doctor I apologize on his behalf. He doesn't like hospitals. Namdi?!"

Reaching out, she placed her palm on his arm calming the shivers she was close enough to see. Seeing Zainab's unyielding disposition Namdi caved.

"My bad doc, got a little bit of a bad flash back. So how long were you watching for?"

She blushed again, her body visibly relaxing.

"Namdi! Doctor I suggest you don't bother being gentle when treating him."

"That will be taken under advisement. I'll give you a minute to calm down."

With one last look at Namdi she turned around. It was then Namdi noticed a small hill right below his waist, capped off by the hospital gown. Flustered he rushed to press the budding mushroom down leading to painful repercussions. Sighing he began running numbers in his head, Zainab's unrestrained smile warming up the room.

"Alright doctor you can turn around now. You look kind of young for a doc. Are you sure you know what you're doing?"

A subtle change occurred in Doctor Oluwakemi when she heard this. They both watched her make her way to his bedside. She immediately saw the lipstick on his bandaged rib. With a pencil she poked it not too gently.

"Does it hurt?"

Tears struggled to escape Namdi's eyes but he sucked it back in shaking his head, aware of Zainabs watchful gaze.

"What about here?"

Her pencil jabbing harder at another section of tender ribs. Namdi nearly bit his tongue as once again he bore the pain with little expression on his face. Behind Doctor Oluwakemi, Namdi could easily read Zainab's silent words. He became even more determined to not make a sound. Reconnecting his sensors, her eyes lingered on his lips.

"I don't remember you having a cut lip"

Puzzled she checked the chart. Zainab's blush went unnoticed.

"I bit myself, lips taste better than your hospital food."

"Doc, can he be discharged today? My parents will be joining us for dinner."

"Today? Zainab, I'm not sure i'm in the condition to survive a dinner with your dad"

"Hush, you aren't the doctor"

"Doctor please tell him/her"

They said at the same time, 2 pairs of eyes, one demanding, the other pleading. Under the weight of the attention Oluwakemi quickly turned to the chart in her hand. With a finger she pushed at the bridge of her glasses, taking her time to collect herself. She turned to Namdi, expression of unfinished revenge evident.

"Yes, he can be discharged this evening. Lucky man, there were only light bruising and a minor cut on his forehead"

"This is light and minor?! You just want to get rid of me don't you?"

"Sir! I do not take lightly what you are inferring."

"Inferring? Just admit it. I want a second opinion. I hear about female doctors being..."

"Quit it Namdi!"

Like a puppet on a string he bit back the rest of his words. With a smile Zainab washed away Namdi's initial outburst.

"Thank you doctor. If you don't mind giving me your number in case something comes up."

"That'll be fine."

Zainab reached for her phone nestled between a vase with plastic flowers and her purse; swiping before handing it to the doctor.

"Here, if you don't mind typing it in."

"That reminds me, here's his phone. Paramedics left it at the front desk."

Namdi watched his phone fall into Zainab's hands, an unexplained dread sinking in. Could she have left something in it? The thought now born in his mind. There was no reason for Zainab to open his phone. She hadn't before. But then again she had never had a reason to. Still, there was no reason for her now. Or was there. Maybe she did suspect something. Round and round his thoughts went coming to a grounding halt when he remembered one crucial moment.

"My ring! What about my ring?!"

He shouted, stunning the two ladies with phone in hand. Zainab's gaze traveled to Namdi's fingers while Oluwakemi looked puzzled. They then both looked at the doctor, one in earnest.

All is fair in love and war

BISI - THE OTHER WOMAN CH 23

In that instant, the phones in their hands were forgotten by all but Namdi, he alone knowing where the ring truly was.

"I don't remember seeing a ring on your finger. I can check again at the front desk. Maybe at the lost and found too."

"If it wouldn't be a bother. Zainab if you could follow her to be sure it's mine."

"Your heart rate seems to be going up..."

Doctor Oluwakemi stepped up to the monitor.

"I'm fine, i'm fine just worried."

"Maybe I should stay here with you while the doctor goes."

"No, no need, in a hospital bed is not the way I plan to go."

Eyes still brimming with worry, Zainab nodded her head; Namdi's phone still in her clutches. He couldn't look away. She wouldn't take it with her would she? Should I say something? But then what do I say? He began to panic as the doctor headed out the room, Zainab a few steps behind. The phone was now out of his sight, Zainabs back the perfect cover. He began to open his mouth to say anything when Zainab stopped. Turning she walked back to the plastic flowers setting Namdi's I-phone down. She looked at him and smiled before chasing the doctor, the door closing behind her with a soft click.

Alone in the private ward Namdi felt the fear of a cornered animal, his time of relief but a mere instant. He could clearly see the smile Zainab had left behind before leaving. Closing his eyes he tried to forget it but it only allowed the memory to grow more vivid. In that smile was knowledge, a statement, a suggestion. She knew something, why else would she smile like that. Or was he making a mountain out of a molehill.

"The phone!"

Swinging his legs out of bed, he tentatively put his weight on them. He could stand. He took the small victory. Each step came with strong protests from his nervous system. He endured, progress coming at a bearable cost. Steadily he made his way to the vase of plastic flowers. Even in their brilliant intertwining colors of blue, red, green, purple and pink Namdi could not see beyond their nature. Grabbing his phone he began the journey back finally laying on the hospital bed, alleviating the pressure on his body. Having no idea how long before Zainab would walk through the door a trembling thumb reached out to unlock the I-phone.

Hands shaking, every inch of him tense to the utmost, he feared the worst. When he saw nothing out of the ordinary on his phone screen the tension evaporated, his body visibly relaxing. Namdi began to laugh at the absurdity of his situation. Even with the laughter causing renewed pain in his ribs he didn't mind. There was nothing for Zainab to see. Worrying had merely shaved minutes of his life he wouldn't get back. Reaching up to wipe the beads of sweat gathered on his forehead, he noticed a notification on the phone complaining of low memory.

Finding it peculiar, Namdi struggled to remember any major files he might have downloaded on the phone. Nothing came to mind. A quick run through his download folder bore no fruit. Chalking it up to the crash, he looked up preparing his mind for the pain he would experience walking back to those flowers. The colors of the flowers delivered into existence a thought in his mind. Sitting up, whiplash of intense pain completely ignored, Namdi's thumb slammed against the phone in a frenzy to unlock it. NO, NO, NO, NO,  NO. Over and over that single word looped in Namdi's distraught mind his thumb striking the gallery icon of the I-phone with more force than needed. The app opened displaying boudoir photo after boudoir photo of her.

We all have secrets (we think) we know no one knows

BISI - THE OTHER WOMAN CH 24

On a bed she lay, body facing up, Cleopatra in her pose. Stomach stretched, back arched, a single finger between her teeth as she gazed longingly at him in nothing but a white shirt. His shirt, the buttons undone, showing the outline of the flat of her stomach while revealing the valley of her bosom; each peak barely hidden. One leg reached forever into the sky toes curled; the other bending at the knee with a hand caressing a taut thigh.

Namdi could not look away, eyes glued to the marvel he saw on his phone. It was the first photo. He looked at her as she looked back at him, the blood in his veins pulsing harder, pumping faster, heat coming off him in waves. Even in 2D she was vibrant and alive. Swipe of the thumb to reach the end merely gave birth to photo after photo, each more provocative than the last. The sound of hurrying footsteps outside the door of his hospital room stopped him cold.

Horror set in as the danger of his situation hit him like a sledgehammer. Namdi knew he had to move but his body refused to comply, frozen in terror. Do something! He silently shouted in vain, unable to do anything but listen as the footsteps got closer and closer. It reached his front door, an agitated Namdi waiting, watching the knob of the door, the executioners axe coming closer and closer to his neck. Hearing the footsteps fading into the distance, Namdi felt a heavy pressure lifted from his shoulders, mobility returning to his limbs.

The fear of what might have been galvanized him, his fingers a flurry of motion deleting the pictures. Picture after picture disappeared from the world, nervous glances aimed at the door. More than half way through Namdi let out a small sigh of relief knowing he would soon finish and devoting his full attention to the task. The door knob turned, shocking an unprepared Namdi, the phone slipping from his hand, a picture of her curving seductively against a door filling the screen.

Over and over the phone turned, gravity embracing it in her unforgiving grasp till it landed face down on the unyielding hospital floor. Namdi nearly cried out in frustration.

"Honey you won't believe the things that people forget here!"

"Do tell Zainab. Find anything for the one who has everything?"

His voice remained steady, mind working a mile a minute. I have to distract her, Namdi thought while also trying to remember how much time he had set for the screen to turn of.

"Has everything? What is that meant to mean?"

"Zainab, you know how hard it is to get you a gift. Remember your birthday shortly after we started dating..."

She laughed as she reminisced. Running a hand through her dark hair she moved to Namdi's bedside, her complete focus on his cut lip.

"You thought you were such a Casanova back then. What did you even get me again?"

"Woman, stop pretending like you don't remember."

"Oh, so you know what I remember and don't remember. I'm guessing you also know what i'm thinking too."

Zainab looked at Namdi, seeming to dare him to read between the lines, her face inches away from his. From the door to his side he could swear she glided on air.  He forever marveled at the way she moved. She has the grace of a panther, sleek, silent and elegant but sometimes it felt like there was an inkling of something more; A thought Namdi could not quite shake off but did not dwell on. Seeing her so close to him he reached up to kiss her, body still emanating heat.

"This guy! After we were just caught red handed."

Roughly she pushed him away, her hand pressing his back to the hospital bed.

"Alright, alright, I thought you wanted a kiss is all."

"After the time we were pretty much caught at the company Christmas party, we agreed we would be more careful."

"And whose idea was it? Zainab tell me whose idea it was to use my bosses office?"

Zainab looked sheepishly at Namdi.

"He never comes for the Christmas parties. How was I meant to know... It's weird you still call him boss even now."

"I'm sorry Zainab, I'll try harder to stop. Now come here and tell me what you found."

He reached for her but she nimbly dodged his outstretched hand aiming for her waist.

"What is this? Isn't this your phone on the floor?"

Dancing away from him she saw the phone slightly under the bed.

"Zainab don't worry about it, first tell me what you found at the lost and found."

"Namdi why are you now acting like i'm a spoiled brat that can't bend down to pick up a phone."

Chuckling she reached for the phone. Namdi lay there, powerless to do anything, reduced to praying enough time had passed. Mind crunching up one unsatisfactory answer after another for what she might see.

The cost of satisfying our desires

TANGENT - My attempt at posting 2 chapters in 1 day. Trying to balance quantity, quality and pacing is such a chore. Slightly optimistic about the result

BISI - THE OTHER WOMAN CH 25

He watched as she rose, his phone in hand, the screen dark. Namdi loathed this roller coaster of emotions he was being subjected to, cursing that other woman in his mind. Now all she needs to do is hand it to me. God why don't I password my phone. Namdi thought. When they first started dating it had been a surprise to Zainab when she picked up his unattended phone and realized it was not locked. Returning to their table after settling the bill, Namdi was treated to the view of Zainab going through the pictures on his phone. Unnoticed, he stood behind her for a few more minutes seeing how far she would go. When he saw her opening his Gtb bank app he lightly coughed. Like a little girl caught stealing meat from the pot she shrieked dropping the phone with a guilt ridden look that still somehow came off as cute.

"It doesn't look cracked, maybe I should turn it on to check if..."

Watching her press the home button Namdi's heart flew up to his throat, his hand damning it all and reaching for it even though it was already too late. Desperation drives us to attempt fruitless endeavors. In full view of the both of them, the home screen of the I-phone came up without a single crack.

"You really are lucky, no crack even after dropping from such a height."

Her finger tapped her lower lip like she pondered his luck. Seeing the home screen, all the tension bled from Namdi's muscles as he took the phone out of her hands. With the same care shown to a new born he cradled the phone in his hand unaware of Zainab's interest in his actions. Hope had planted a seed in his heart once again. He could finally see a possible rainbow at the end of this storm ridden times.

"I can't take this hospital anymore. I want to get out of here."

It came out in a whisper, his head shaking from left to right.

"Namdi, doctor said you can leave in..."

"Don't care, I won't spend another minute. The pain is bearable enough."

"Ok, ok i'll get Doctor Oluwakemi to sign the discharge papers. Men sometimes..."

His forcefulness only slightly surprised Zainab. Behind it she could still sense pain. The knowledge that he was not a fan of hospitals was not new to her. She had never felt closer to him than when he had shared it all to her. With the door closing behind her, Namdi let out a breath of relief. Quickly he began deleting again, determined to be rid of all the damning pictures, some of which contained more than just her. Finally he reached the last one, the first he had seen. A few seconds passed before he realized his finger still hovered over the delete button. She looked back at him, brown eyes reminding him of his truth. Another crossroad, a decision of his own making, the consequences to be borne not by him alone. Namdi watched the upload bar till it reached hundred percent. Only then did he delete the last picture from his phone.
