Help To Confirm If My BMW E46 Engine is Dead. by Almaiga: 10:04am On Aug 24, 2017 |
Hello Car Gurus. I sincerely need your advise as regard my Car. I drive a BMW E46 325, 2004 model with 6plugs. The Car was seating idle for a week. When I intend to use the Car, I crank the engine and the Car starts but it went off in about 3 seconds ( note that, this has never happend since I have been in possession of the Car). At this ponit, all effort I made to start the Car was abortive. A day later, I brought my Mechanic to use his professional ability to start the Car, but the Car never start. After observing the behavior of the Engine and consultations he make with other professionals (Rewires, and other BMW specialist) via phone. He concluded that, the Engine lost Compression and I need to buy a new Engine. Note: the Car had an overheat early last month. And I have fixed it by changing the top Gasket, Radiator, and water hoses. I have also traveled to Kaduna from Benin and I am presently back in Benin with no issue. The Car has been serving me well until it refuse to start. Please Car Gurus should help me analyse this, is the loss of Compression responsible for this, do I at this point need to get a new Engine? Thanks in advance. |

Even a dieing engine that refuses to crank will show signs. Check your battery terminals, your alternator, and other electrical parts first to ascertain that they are in order, then try to crank again. However, scan the vehicle first, it will trow up possible causes why it's not cranking. I suspect electrical sector though. Engines don't die prematurely, they usually give obvious signs. Cheers |

Almaiga: If it cranks and does not start. Check your fuel pump, filter, and fuse. It's certainly electrical. |

your mechanic is right .Save buying a new engine .
If you are still in doubt ,arrange for a compression test for your engine . |

This is likely an electrical fault. Check for spark and fuel supply to the engine. I'm suspecting your fuel pump. It seems the car ran for 3 seconds on the residual fuel in the fuel lines. 2 Likes |

cyborg123:The Mechanic did the fuel pressure test and confirmed that the fuel pump is in order and the pressure of fuel supplied to the injector is OK. He also checked and confirmed that enough current is supplied by the spark plugs. |

Almaiga:Okay. Engine change is a good suggestion by the mechanic then. At least for reliability sake. |

Almaiga: Remove the six plugs, pour some engine oil into the six cylinders through the plug holes, allow to settle for some minutes, then crank system the engine without the plugs, after that put the plugs back and start the car. U are good to go. |

I'm 100% certain that your engine is not dead. Not a BMW 3 series engine. 1 Like 1 Share |

Shalomc:The BMW Mechanic's over here could not dictate the reason my former engine couldn't start. It was only cranking but it refuse to start. We changed the plugs, check the timing yet, the Engine refused to start. They later concluded that the Engine has lost Compression. The Engine was working fine before it malfunctioned. I only parked it for about two months, after which I tried to start it and it refused. At that point, it became obvious that I needed a new Engine. |

Almaiga: What of fuel consumption? |
Re: Help To Confirm If My BMW E46 Engine is Dead. by Almaiga: 9:39am On Jun 03, 2018 |
deathwing:From my observation, the fuel consumption in this present Engine is similar to the previous one. This is a 6 cylinder 2.5ltr Engine, the fuel consumption can not be same as a 4 cylinder Engine. But I'll rate it's fuel consumption OK, for a 6 cylinder Engine. |
