131. COUNTLESS.

It took both the expertise of Aunty Comfort, as a retired nurse and the experience of an elderly person like my mum, her younger sister, the pastors and other elderly people in the room to finally revive the fainted bride.

Her wedding gown was loosed partially around her neck to make way for the air being discharged by the giant Ox fan to reach her lungs.

There's no need trying to describe to you the present situation in the room. But all I can say is everyone was worried, firstly for Joke's state and secondly for my earlier declaration.

My mum, after Joke had gained admission back into consciousness, had spoken to me quietly like a concerned mother should and I'd assured her that everything is fine.

Then, Nike left the midst of the people that were comforting her crying sister and made a wild rush at the unconcerned-sitting Chioma and pounced on her before she began to rain all sort of slaps on her.
"see what you've caused you b!tch!..." Those were her utterances as she continued to beat the screaming Chioma.

She would have torn Chioma to shreds if not for the quick intervention of my friends.

Somehow, to everybody's wonderment, I appeared calmly unperturbed. Even me myself couldn't explain my sudden calmness. Well, maybe its simply because have seen more worse in my life. Poor me!

Instead of getting worried, I was having other irrational thoughts.

Seeing how my wife had so easily fainted after my earlier statement made me to momentarily wonder how some people always find it easy to faint and some find it hard.
If anyone should have a reason to faint on that day, it should be no one else than me.

The moment Chioma appeared to disrupt our wedding is all the emotional breakdown required of me to faint but somehow, I still stood strongly on my feet. Well, maybe fainting is not just capable enough to bring me down. Fainting is not just meant for me.

Remember some times back when I was being chased by those three guys that had earlier beaten Jide to faintness, I remember trying all the fainting formula, but none of it worked.

Seeing Joke faint so easily made me to conclude that maybe something is wrong with my fainting trigger. Or so, I thought.

Just then, I felt a tap on my shoulder that snapped me out of my thoughts.

"what are you doing? Are you crazy? I told you to deny ever knowing her, why didn't you stick to that?"

I took a moment to study the now-getting better bride, as she was being helped to the cushion by the people around her before I turned to face Jide and we began to talk in whispers.

"calm down...I know what am doing..." I stated with a confident tone. Jide with a squinted look at my face, shook his head unbelievably and said,

"does what you are doing includes making your wife faint on her wedding day? Eh? Tell me thats also part of your mighty plan...."

"its not part of it, but its necessary..."

"are you crazy? You saying its necessary your wife faints today?...chai!"

"calm down guy, don't make it sound as if fainting is such a bad thing. Atleast you've once tasted it yourself and we both know its one of the easiest short cuts out of embarrasment...You should be grateful you know how to faint, I'll do anything for that. I've got everything under control!" I assured in a calm manner and returned my attention towards Joke, who was now back to her old self.

"you see that little vein on your forehead?" Jide said to me again and I made a side glance at him, "its funny how I use to think it made you look more handsome...but after what you just caused, now I realise that vein symbolises all the blood leaving your brain. Idiot..." He hissed and made for his seat.

"Mr, Emmanuel, please have your seat." It was after what the pastor said that I realised I'd been standing all this while.

I heaved a sigh and motioned towards my seat, loosened the straps of my bow tie a bit and settled down.

"Glory be to Gawd, your wife is now okay..." The other pastors beside him chorused halleluia in unison and he continued."now, we would love if you can tell this congregation by how and what you meant by knowing this woman sitting beside me here...thats if its okay by your wife..." He shifted his gaze towards my Wife, who was sitting in between my mum and Aunt Comfort. She managed to give him a weakly affirmative nod and he beckoned to me to proceed.

All eyes were now on me. I took my time to study the meanings in each stares am getting from all of them starting from Lewis (who was sitting next to me by the right) round back to Nike (who was by the keft).

Chioma has this arrogant look on her face that instantly provoked the angerness in me. She must be feeling proud of herself right now. She had successfully apprehended the mightily handsome Darous. She can now be his wife, or atleast have an elephant share from his wealth, obviously she's feeling like a kid that just got his first Viju milk.

But little did she know that, this Darous can't be brought down easily like that.

If I can escape all the vengeance traps of Beatrice and Jide, then nothing can stop me from having this happiness I've been craving for. Not even her psychopatic mind can.

I brought out my phone and unlocked it. "everyone, please, I apologise for my part in the earlier commotion....but I tell you, its for the better..."

"for the better? Are you kidding me? You just confirmed that you knew this woman and you said its for the better? Which kine better is that? Eh? I swear, he no go better for that better!" I was expecting someone to say all that to me after I'd paused, but such never came. Instead, all I got was a gasp from Nike. So I continued.

"first of all, before everything can get better, I need to make a call...trust me people, only that call can shed light to this situation..." The pastor gave me his consent and I placed the call to someone I hoped will not do more harm than good.

Thankfully, the call was answered after the second ring and I placed it on loudspeaker. Everyone was now attentive. Chioma had this confused look on her face that got me happy a bit. She's just exactly where I want her to be. This must be a good plan afterall.

"hello..." Came the soft reply of a woman from the other end.

"Good afternoon, please is that Dr Mrs Busari of No Money, No Treatment Hospital?"

"yes, who wants to know?"

"erm, ma, this is Mr Darous...am the one that brought a female patient to your hospital some times ago..."

"hmm..." She sounds to be trying to recall her memory of me. It took her a short moment to process it, and once she did, she did what I'd expected of her. She screamed out her suprise. "MR Darous! Oh my Gawd! Is this really you?"

"yes ma...actually, I wanted you to...."

"oh my!" She interrupted, "the same Mr Darous that used to say erm..erm... helping people is like reaching an orgasm for him?"

"yes maam....help someone....."

"help someone today and increase your sexual life!" She completed and bursted into laughter. The whole room were just watching the short drama being displayed by us with increasing confusing state of mind.

"so, what can I do for you?" She asked after the laughter had died down.

"maam please, you do remember the patient I brought to your hospital some months ago?"

"the lady you said a runaway driver accidentally knocked to the ground when she was crossing the road absentmindedly?"

"yes maam?" I confirmed.

"okay, what about her?"

"its nothing serious ma...but ma, can you kindly tell me again, what you said her situation was back then?"

She paused a bit and cleared her throat. "okay...after we admitted her and had given her the treatments you paid for, we did some tests on her and discovered that she had lost some part of her memory as a result of the accident....but after some weeks, she started showing some signs of a mentally derained and we informed you."

"yah, yah, you told me that she needed to be taken to the psychriatic ward before her situation got worse..."

"and you consented to it...infact you have been paying for all the expenses, ranging from cloths to the drugs and all sorts..."

"thank you ma...one more thing..."

"whats that?"

"please ma, did any of her family member every showed up during that period? Or up till this moment?" I asked again.

"no...no...not atall...you're the only one that had stood by her during that time sir...and for that, Gawd's mercy will never abscond from your life..."

"amen ma...thank you..."

"you welcome sir...once again, thank you for the care on Floren..."

"oh! never mention maam.." I quickly cut in before she damage my plan.

"and again sir, thank you for the labouratory donation o...we are very grateful...thank you..." She stated appreciatively and I replied her before ending the call.

I returned the phone to my pocket and restraightened my gaze to the awaiting stares of everyone.

"the woman you just heard her voice is the Doctor that treated a certain lady I'd found in the pool of her own blood some months ago...like you hear her say, it was me that took care of all the medical bills and none of her family members even showed up at...."

"beg your pardon Mr Emmanuel..." The pastor interrupted. "sorry for interrupting you, but for the sake of clarity, how does that call rectify the mysery in this situation? Am sure everyone would love to hear that side before your benovelent deeds..."

"yes, tell us how that call will help us to the reception..." Joke chipped in and everyone murmured affirmatively.

"that lady the Doctor was talking about, is the same woman sitting beside you sir..." I pointed at Chioma and she seemed startled by my outburst.

"me?" Chioma queried suprisedly.

"yes you!" I reiterated furtherly. "I helped you, and is this how you pay me back?"

"wait...what!" Chioma said again and rose up. "I don't know what you're talking about...Darous, is this your feeble prank to get rid of me?" She scoffed and glanced around at everyone. She became uneasy when she saw the look on their faces.

"pleaase calm down everyone..." Declared Lewis. "it makes sense now...am a neurosurgeon myself and I know my patients when I see them..." He rose up and pointed at Chioma. "with everything you've caused today, you're certainly a mentally derained patient..."

"am not crazy! Can someone listen to me?" Chioma cried out in her desperate attempt to wriggle herself out of my trap. I smiled at myself as I'd sucessfully made her look like a lunatic in front of everyone.

Who says you can only kill two birds with one stone? To hell with that. I just killed a flock of bird with one perfect sling shot!

"come on lady,.." Efe chipped in. "you have all the natural qualities of a mad woman and you're still denying your heavenly talent?"

Chioma gasped out shockingly.

"only a mad woman can have the neuro transmitter to break the transmission of a wedding transmission." Nike added.

Chioma fummed angrily and wanted to rush at Nike but Collins quickly stepped in.

"hey! Lets control ourselves please." The pastor halted the growing exchange of insults at the bewildered Chioma. "No need to engage in vulgar words... Gentlemen and ladies, Have your seats." Lewis and Chioma sat down reluctantly while the rests complied. "with this revelation by that phone call, me and my colleagues have arrived at a conclusion..." He paused to study our attention. Seeing that our attention was attentive and undivided, he proceeded. "this wedding will proceed as planned and nothing, I mean nothing, not even the gates of Jericho can hinder it from proceeding..." Everyone shouted their delights at the declaration and Joke couldn't hide her excitements as well. She rushed at me and began to kiss me. She then re-packed her gown and to Chioma's disgust, sat down happily on my laps and rested her back on my chest.

The pastor, satisfied with the silence then continued. "this is the reason why some people will lack the presence of a helper through out their lives... Last time I checked, when someone helps you, you become appreciative and not manipulative..." He shifted his focus at Chioma and continued. "lady, I don't know what you're suffering from, but one thing I know is you need help, and an urgent one for that matter.... Mr Emmanuel acted kindly towards you and you choosed the wrong and the most cruel way to repay him..." Chioma wanted to object but the cold stare and angry murmur she got from everyone made her to have a rethink. "there's no point in fighting it, your plan have been faltered by the humanitarian deeds of this humble man here and doing that alone is enough for him to make heaven..but unfortunately, I can't say the same of you..." He released a breath as Chioma bowed down her head in shame.

"brethrens in the lord," Another pastor took charge. "what do you propose we do to this woman?" He said pointing at Chioma.
He had barely finished when Nike said,

"lets hand her over to SARs...let them beat sense back to her brain!"

"yes! I concur!" Jide backed her.

"na so!" Efe supported.

"okay, atleast that way, they can hand her to her parents for immediate medical care. " Lewis concluded.

"is that okay by you?" The pastor asked me. Joke turned her neck towards me and stared longingly into my eyes. She then mouthed a 'NO' to me as I was about to say a 'YES'.

"Yes, erm...NO! No! Lets not do that guys..." I stuttered out to their utter suprise. Even Chioma was suprised as well.

"what?" my friends chorused in unison.

"you know, today is not just only my wedding day, its also my birthday...so as a sign of good will, am granting this girl, ( I called her that, because I don't want them to know that I know her name.) am granting this girl amnesty...and after the wedding, I will personally pay for her medical bills at a well equipped hospital. Ofcourse, not without her family's consent..."

"hope she won't come back later to say she's your mother?" Nike stated with a mocking tone.

"Gawd forbids, no one can take my son from me!" My mother added and everyone busted into laughter.

"I know its a risk, but like you heard the Doctor said, Helping people is like reaching an orgasm for me..."

"not now that you have me..." Joke squeezed in.

"yes, she's right...." Efe added. "you are married now, so helping people shouldn't be your only route to orgasm anymore..."

"you're so damn right...perhaps, like the pastor said, hopefully, it will be my route to making heaven then...." That statement was quickly followed by cheers and jeers.

"okay...so where should we take her for the meantime?" Aunt Comfort asked me.

"The amnesty starts now...let her stay for the party and make sure she enjoys it...but if, I repeat, if she misbehave in the slightest way.... according to science, the fastest way to hear a woman's real voice is when she's being chased by a dog, if she misbehaves, let the dogs escort her out..." I concluded and the pastors prayed for everyone before we were allowed to join the awaiting guests at the reception hall. It was quarter past 5pm.

Suprisingly, only few people have left. It was almost 3hours since our absence and it seemed as if we haven't left atall.

The Dj and the upcoming artists had done their bests to make sure things doesn't get bored for the loyal people that have waited behind.

But maybe their loyalty was for the variety of foods on display or for the couple remained yet to be ascertained.

Ofcos you can't be starring at Macaroni and Cheese, cheese fried, chicken sandwish, bean and plantain pottage, peppersoup, efo riro, deep fried battered yams, cheese burger, buffallo burger, chimichanga, mashed potatoes, gumbo, jollof rice, spaghetti sauce, spaghetti monzarella, spaghetti squash, broccoli cheese sause and all sorts of assorted drinks and still have the guts to leave.

The moment we entered the reception hall, we were met with hootings and excitement shouts.

Chris, on spotting Joke and I, fled towards us and I quickly carried him and played with him briefly before Nike took custody of him.

***

2HRS LATER.

The ceremony inside the hall had just ended and it was time to take pictures.

Snappily, I'd completed my own part of the photo schedule and I was sitting down not too far from where Joke and her bridal aeroplane or train, or bridal maids or househelps, (seriously, I don't know what they call them ) were taking their own group pictures.

"guy, that your plan na one brilliant plan o." Came Jide's voice from behind me. I turned and smiled as he settled down on the chair opposite me.

"I told you to trust me..."

"what if I tell you that I nearly fell for your game nko?"

"really?"

"yes na? But then I remember that na Lantoro hospital we carry her go on that day no be, No money no treatment hospital...but tell me, which lady are you really talking about?"

I smiled devilishly and glanced around to make sure no one can hear us before I began to explain to Jide of how I was coming back from work one fateful evening when I saw a young lady lying in the middle of the road in a pool of her own blood. My human feelings got the better of me as I rushed down after parking my car and dashed towards her. I carried her inside my car and began to drive to the nearest hospital. I'd drove for just five minutes when I saw a sign board with 'No Money No Treatment hospital' engraved on it. The lady had began to cough out blood and there was no time to start questioning the mental sense behind that awkward hospital name. So I drove her in and began to call for help. The nurses came out and helped me take the lady to the emergency unit. Dr Busari appeared moments later and told me that I must pay some money as deposit before they can even start anything on the dying patient. Again, no time to question the sanity behind that demand and I quickly paid the said amount.

Later, around midnight, the lady had gained consciousness and I was allowed to speak with her. It was during our conversation that she told me her name is Florence. She hailed from Oyo state. (my home town.) She claimed a car had hit her as she was crossing the road in deep thoughts. I asked her the reason why she was crossing the road in deep thoughts and she began to weep. But after a lot of soothing words from me, she opened up and told me that she works as a househelp for one senator and his wife. She said, most times, the wife of the senator is not always around. She travels alot. She said during the absence of his wife, the senator will force himself on her and molest her. At that moment, I asked of her age and she said twenty four. I nodded my head pitifully and asked her to continue. She said, she was getting fed up by that cruel act and she had ran away on the night she was been hit by a car when her boss was having his shower.

"the trauma was so much for her to take in and she began to act insanely and she lost some part of her memory. So, technically, there's no way to contact her family. I've filed a missing report several times, make television announcements but its as if she'd dropped from the sky. So, since then, I've been the one taking care of her medical bills.

"hmmm...thats deep. What of the senator, what did you do to him?" Jide asked.

"did to him? Nothing... I don't even know him. Florence didn't get the chance to tell me his name or address before she lost her memory... Even if she does, I can only hope thunder should locate him fast before he ruined another person's life."

"thats brilliant of you..." Jide remarked.

"which one?" I asked.

"for you to have swapped Chioma for Florence....and make the Doctor attest to it without giving anyone a single room to detect a foul play? Come on, you deserve some accolades." He remarked.

"come on...you dey make my head swell o..."

"why won't it swell? You took after me na...infact, I taught you well.."

"na thunder go fire your last girlfriend...taught who?"

"ah...you see, I know how to make your head swell and how to make it empty at the same time..." He laughed out loud.

"Fool!" I lamented playfully.

I turned around in an attempt to avoid the smirk and arrogant look on Jide's face and I was shocked to the bone when I saw Joke standing inches away from me. She had an indifferent look on her face that was a striking contrast to the happy one she had on before I left her alone with the photographer.

It was already dark, save for the big hallogen lights that illuminated the whole compound.

I rose up and held her by the shoulder and said, "whats wrong?"

"nothing..." She replied sharply. "am just tired...can we go home now?"

"sure...let me call Lewis to bring the car around.." I quickly called Lewis to bring the car to where we were and withing five minutes, the Rolce Royce pulled over in front of her. We waited for Nike and Chris to join us before we departed the premises to my house. We would have headed straight for Paris, where we'd initially planned to spend our honeymoon but we couldn't as the day have been far spent and most importantly, we were both tired.

***

We got home at exactly 9:15pm. Lewis after bidding us goodnight, got inside his own car (which he had parked in my compound before we left in the morning) and zoomed off.

The whole manshion was now occupied by Me, My wife, Her sister and my Child.

We all whyned and dined together for several minutes before Joke excused herself from our midst and headed upstairs where our matrimonial room was located.

Chris has already slept off on the sofa-bed adjacent the spiral staircase. Nike was in good spirit as she seems to never stop talking to me. I was indeed a happy man.

"is it proper to still be calling you Darous?" Nike asked. She was sitting at my opposite on the dinning chair.

"ofcos, married or single, I'll always be Darous to myself and everyone..."

"am just saying now that you are married, maybe you should change it...."

"ah! Why would I do that? Bearing Darous has gotten me this far in my life and why would I want to change it now? Moreover, did Messi change his name after he won the first ballon'dor?"

"I don't know...am not a football fan...I love wrestling though..." She stated with a placcid smile.

"okay, did John Cena or Roman Reign change their names after they won the world champion?"

"nope....."

"so if all the above mentioned mortals didn't change their names, why would a son of the might immortal thunder change his?"

She reclined on the chair and released a breath. "I just want to tell you that am sorry for ever acting like a b!tch to you...am sorry...you're a nice man, you don't deserve my anger...you're perfect for my sister...." She stated ebulliently.

"its okay...thats bygones now..."

"yes, bygones, including the sex we had that time, that should be a bygone too...including all your past girl..."

"Darous!" Joke's shouting of my name echoed from upstairs.

"your wife is waiting for you... I guess thats my goodnight call..." With that, I rose up and dashed upstairs before Joke could call my name again.

I opened the door to my room and was flabbergasted to see Joke's red and watery eyes. She was holding a picture in her hand and I began to take slow steps towards her.
She threw the pics at my feet and I was dumbfounded at what I saw.

There lies beneath my feet, the same pictures Chioma had taken after she had killed Adedoyin and had drugged me. The picture was showing the blurred image of me while my hands were placed on Adedoyin's neck.

"what's this?" I asked as I picked the picture from the floor. She was still whimpering and managed to say,

"just turn it around..."

I did and for the upteenth time, I was distraught at what was written therein.

'YOU MAY HAVE WON THE BATTLE, BUT YOU WILL LOSE THE WAR ONCE YOU FAIL TO EXPLAIN THIS TO YOUR DARLING WIFE!- Chy.

My throat was instantly dry. I began to shake visibly. My hands began to tremble.

"Darous, whats going on? Why do I have that picture in my bag?" My wife cried queringly with a determined voice.

"erm...sweetheart, I can explain..." I fumbled out.

"yes am listening. Tell me or else am out of here....and just do me one favour, don't you dare lie to my face again." She declared and folded her arms across her chest.

She waited for several minutes to hear me say something and once she detected that I wasn't ready to say anything, She grabbed her luggage and walked past me.

I ran after her as she got to the stairs and tried to hold her, but in her attempt to disengage from me, she lost balance and I watched in shock as the joy of my life began to tumble down the steps.

I descended after her and when I got down, the horror awaiting me was too disheartening.

My wife's unconscious body was lying on the marbled floor while her luggage had landed on the stomach of my three years old Chris.

Someone once told me that this life can be fun at times and can be sour at the next hour. But most of the time, its just the combination of both. Apparently, I've felt the sting of both in the space of 24hours.

And that begs for this question,

Can I ever be happy?
