The 10kobo collected is still money. Like someone has said it is not the practice that is bad, but the abuse of it that should be condemned.
Human beings have tendency to abuse any noble initiative. Even not collecting the bride price will still somehow be abused most especially by feminists who will see it as an opportunity to challenge the authority of their husbands.

Social media opinions cannot change tradition, we should stop deceiving ourselves with these bride price blah blah blah.

If as a man,you are charged higher than you can pay to marry, you simply back-off since you can't afford it, not ranting because of your inability to meet up the needed requirements, afterall some tribes don't charge high.

And as a woman, once a man pay your bride price to wife you, have it in mind that your submissiveness isn't negotiable.

Tradition is tradition and social media can't change it.

Tradition is tradition but you allow the Arabs and White folk to cahnge everything with their faalse doctrines of Islam and Christianity?

Why are folk then changin the Osu tradition and female circumcision ?
Traditions emerge to serve a purpose and if no longer necessary they are discarded

The traditional tradition of the Igbo people was polygamy.
Today how many of them marry two wives? The white man changed that

Slavery was once upon a time "tradition".
What about inheriting wives? I could go on an on .

Picking and choosing which tradition to keep is based on what?

Poor ppl get married even with the bride price so wat are u saying?
Do u know how much they use for cremation abroad?
All this boils down to choice

The problem is not bride price.. In fact, I don't see any reason for it.

The problem is the list. I am got married recently. and I know how much the list cost me for both introduction ceremony and traditional wedding.. Plus white wedding..

We have a long way to go..

What should be more important to me is the love and understanding of the both parties.. Also not all families are like that..some understand this thing and make it easier.. Some just want to do funny stuff..

Igbo culture has made it mandatory that the parents collect bride price, it is a symbol of selling their daughter to the man, though these days they use ceremony to cover the whole thing and make it look as if the woman wasn't sold, but deep down, they all know she was sold to her husband.

I know people that are concern will hate this dude for saying this but in actual sense I think she make some sense. Pride price is good when it's reasonable and not money making venture or turn to Plc or Ltd company.

It's very unfortunate this horrible development refused to take a reasonable shape in the East and this has caused so many untold pains and horror in so many people life. Truth is bitter but must be spoken at all cost.

If you try to talk about it they will attack you and call you names. I'm not against it but must be minimal and reasonable not pushing young men into the wall. I have heard a guy shouted down his wife telling her when he talk the wife must not talk afterall didn't her parent collect bride price so she is sold to him and will remain his subject for life in the present of everybody the lady was so ashamed. Honestly I'm not that a fan to any unecessary bride price craps.

She had an evening with some young people in Lagos yesterday, and someone asked a question about bride price.

She also revealed she is not a fan of bride price because it ruins things.

Feminism is different from culture
feminism is culture where it is coming from. This is to tell you it is not everything we should adopt as Africans if we want our culture to remain. It’s all psychological.

When we do away with all our customs and tradition, I wonder what will be left, we'll just be living on borrowed identity.

The problem is not the idea of the bride price, it's the exorbitant amounts being charged by the bride's family.
Whose traditions? Who created these customs? Why did we had to do away with the sacrifice of virgins in burying a king? Why did we trash the pouring of libations to Gods? Why are we no longer killing twins? Why should humans beings be traded?

then don’t try and be like the whites... it’s simple. Feminism, homosexuality is heinous according to the African culture and tradition. Polygamy is widely accepted. You see why Africa is where it is, we are trying to live a double standard. So there are 2 options: live like the whites and forget culture. Live like an African and accept the culture in its totality I.e this means your husband can marry more than one wife.

most places, bride price itself is insignificant. It's all the other costs involved in wedding ceremonies both traditional and religous

Please, the bride price doesn't give the man an entitlement to maltreatment his wife, rather a bad husband is a bad husband.
in a society where different meanings are read to things, you would expect a man who has paid millions to marry a woman feel he has every right to maltreat the woman. And this is Adichie’s point. It’s a mind thing.

Queen, which tradition are you talking about? The tradition of some greed infested men who lived hundreds of years ago? Why should we live by the customs of men who lived a long time ago, especially when this custom reduces the value of a human being?

Who has the traditions helped? These stupid traditions have caused more harm than good.

It is only in NIGERIA that it is ok for parents to sell their daughters for money and foodstuff.

It is when Nigerians are willing to abandon the rubbish that they are used to that we can now start improving.

Say NO to old pot-bellied politicians.
Say NO to local traditions.
traditions are not stupid, they might be abused but they are not, your concern should be those who abuse it and not the tradition itself, you're not wiser than your ancestors!

Look as a biafran lemme say this
Only a greedy parent will charge u stupidly for marrying his daughter
Even chi that is talking,i'm sure her parents received a minimal bride price
U cannot copy a white man's life to the detriment of your own
Look at china,japan and india
All took the white man's tech yet their traditions remain till this day
Don't be deceived

In China and Japan its a choice for both families to decide who pays, the proceeds go to the couple. In India the woman pays and majority of the collection comes into the marriage of the newly weds. Nigeria's case in discourse here is centered on the exploitative schemes of some families.

I like this thought. Obviously there is an “abuse” which is obvious. What would you suggest a solution? What were the judgments behind the tradition? What does it signify, what has changed? What’s the value to the bride’s family and to the new family being joined?

Any tradition that is immutable dies eventually.... Ask Latin or many african mini cultures.
