How many people will fail to understand that TICAD7 begins tomorrow?? How many people will fail to understand that dignitaries are holding bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit?? 12 Likes 1 Share |

I was going to post this yesterday, but I got distracted. It's not all rosey at TICAD7. There's an old African problem that might rear its ugly head at this summit. It's the problem of Western Sahara and Morocco. Western Sahara shares a border with Morocco. It was colonised by Spain, but Morocco invaded the territory when Spain left. Morocco claims that Western Sahara is part of Morocco, but the inhabitants want their independence. They fought a guerilla war against Morocco and they have a government in exile. Morocco left the Organisation of African Unity in the early 1980s because the OAU recognised Western Sahara. There was a conference in Tokyo last year and it was organised to help prepare for TICAD7. Western Sahara sent delegates to the conference and the Moroccan delegates withdrew because of the presence of Western Sahara. Will this problem occur again tomorrow? Here is a video of last year's conference. The Japanese chairman of the conference is stating that Western Sahara is not recognised and that they shouldn't put their flag on the table. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=360y0DvQtXA |

Kai! So people are still talking about a "president of Japan"? Anyway, I need to make one last clarification before I go. |
Re: Pictures Of African Leaders In Japan For TICAD7 by naptu2: 10:18am On Aug 27, 2019 |
1) Why didn't President Buhari attend the G7 summit in France? (I have had to answer this kind of question in the past when GEJ did not attend a G8 summit. It's sad that I have to answer it again years later) No African country is a member of the G7. However, G7 (or G8 as it then was) countries decided to invite African countries to their meetings, so that they can talk about the development of the African continent. However, they do not invite the same countries every time. They rotate it. President Buhari has attended the G7 summit a couple of times and he might still attend future summits, but the fact that he was not there this year does not matter at all. 2) Why is TICAD7 being held in Japan. The Tokyo International Conference on African Development is being organised by the Government of Japan, the African Union, the United Nations and other organisations. There's absolutely nothing wrong in holding the conference in the country that pays most of the bills of the conference. However, that does not mean that it cannot be held in Africa. TICAD6 was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2016. 3 Likes 1 Share

This is one of the side events at TICAD7. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is hosting a youth event on the sidelines of the summit.

This is the dispute that I was referring to. There is a representative of Western Sahara (Sahrawi Republic) at Ticad7 and the Moroccans are not happy. (A bit of context. Algeria backed the Sahrawi guerrilas [called the Polisario Front] in their war against Morocco)
