All the people saying connection should go and sleep. I have never known anyone to get a job. Lots of Nigerian graduates did not know anyone prior to getting their jobs.

Well, you may be one of the small 10% who were so lucky to have it that way. I know a federal government institution where about 80 graduates were recently employed, all of them were nominated by one big man or the other. No one was employed there on merit only, OK!

For govt jobs, OP is absolutely right.

No part of the article narrowed it down to govt jobs.

This is why Nigeria is such a shithole. merit is the last criterion for giving jobs. Mediocrity and nepotism lead the way

well what the OP said only works for 0.9% of Nigerians....
everything in Nigeria is connection, man know man..that is just it...
if u work in a big companies like p&g, samal, PZ (just giving examples) Ull.know what am talking about...and those are the company making alot of Nigerians youths partially employed(modern slavery)...and as for the government work...let's not deceive ourselves...it's purely connection..those top officials have their own candidate..the plain Truth

To those quoting me, I stand by what I have said, that a company will go an extra mile to get you if they need you and I am typical example of what I have said. The only thing you need is a strong skill, with a strong skill, everything else will fall in place. Getting a job shouldn’t be as difficult as it’s being portrayed. 90% of those quoting me are your average Nigerian lad with a Bsc and nothing else to back to it up.

Connection: except of course it’s a government job, no company will compromise productivity for connection, recommendation may get u the job, but won’t keep u in the job.

Interview: only mediocre companies will be doing interview like it’s a gateway to paradise, attend interview with decent companies and you will find out they careless about how u dress but what u r bringing to the company. God knows I met my company HR wearing jeans, t shirt and sneakers and this is a highly professional field. My CV is already speaking for me and he knows it.

CV: I spent almost N10k plus hiring “professional cv writers” here on NL to help me design my CV, and still nothing. Truth is, let ur CV be as fanciful as a peacock, if it doesn’t have the right qualifications it won’t matter.

Location: Based on how strong the company is, if you like be staying in Sokoto and the company is in Lagos, if you have the right skills, the company will rent accommodation for you. I have a friend that recently started working in Dangote refinery project and they moved him to Lagos with accommodation.

All you need is a very strong skill, I bet you my last penny this guys will look for you. The only reason why the OP posted this is that, all the people attending an interview for a position are all, Bsc with 2:2, a few 1st class and some 3rd class with some funny certifications to make up for the 3rd class. Too many options for the company to pick from so they look for minor and irrelevant things to make the selection process.

I think this whole thing is based on stereotype, people just go on with what they have been told, read and very little of what they have experienced themselves.

If a company needs you, they will go extra mile to get you.
what kind of skills are you talking about the?

The OP is right and to a large extent very wrong on some of his point. He just dey speak English.

Whatever skills you have, never rule out the almighty number one factor. CONNECTION. Recently, I went for an interview on banana Island. From the secretary to the head of the organization. They kept asking me from where did I apply, who invited me, how did I find out they were recruiting. This is just a mere internship for 6months or so.

The woman just look for flimsy excuse to dispatch me with the usual we go call you syndrome.

Also, A CV written by the best recruiter in this world will not do shit if you dont have the necessary requirement on such CV.

Spot on is the skills and experience with what you can offer. This can actually get you the job but yet not still guarantee without connection.

By the way, i am still on the look out. B.tech in mech engineering, 2.1 nysc completed last march. Any opening or recommendation would be highly welcome.

Please you need to define exactly what you mean by a strong skill, and give relevant examples of such a skill.

Even in private companies, connections too matter a lot. I have seen candidates with 2nd class upper, being bypassed for a candidate with 3rd class. And yes....the 3rd class degree holder, got the job.

As for having additional degrees, it may help or it may not. It all depends on the company and the role you are being hired for, within that company.

I have seen Masters' degree holders turned down in favour of BSc holders, because they were overqualified for that role.

I have also seen Ph.D holders searching for jobs but unable to get one, due to pure discrimination, for a variety of reasons.

Sometimes the society causes a strong havoc on our graduates. They are being forced to know that connection is the key to securing a well paid jobs thereby looking for connection instead of applying for a job.
We need to focus on why we graduated from school. Don't let any man tell u that you need a stronger connection to secure a seat. If you're determined enough you will succeed.

Although the economy is very bad and connection is a key factor. what are you doing to improve yourself in this Buhari economy? I know one big brother who is close to 40 but stay at his parent boy quater doing nothing but smoking weed , drinking and chasing olosho. His parents are managing so I dont blame him for being comfortable. Some boys says they can never be anyone's driver or cant work at this job or that job because they are school grads. Yet even in this Buhari economy, if you are not ready to hustle. Then don't expect improvement or connection to help you out. My own take, get good at a trade, start small. Because it is better to make even N500 than no money at all.
