It is AFTER you have subsidised input for farmers, given all the necessary support, and increased productivity THAT you then do the protectionist moves

That way, the gap is closed easily

But Nigeria is a country where most people lack sense
So I am not surprised with this dumb move

First you raise your production, then you can apply protectionist measures.

If other countries retaliate against our own limited exports now, what would we do?

Nigeria cannot produce even 5% of the production yet Buhari's number one goal is to ban.

Expect rice prices to top 40K per bag.

This is what Buhari did in his military regime that people started queuing to get milk.

Socialist nonsense.

Exactly

Finally! Someone is talking sense.

Since we close our borders, our neigbhouring countries has been feeling the heat all because of rice among other things they export to our country legally and illegally. Nigeria is interested in stopping rice importation and not other things coming from them.
Make rice exportation illegal in your countries and we will open back our border. Simple!!

What can the FG do to create the environment you speak of?.... and what incentives do you suggest? If imported rice is banned..... people would be 'forced' to produce locally. The more they produce... the lower would be the price. This is a matter of supply and demand.... a demand is created.... people would move to supply.

Okay when China under Mao did yhwie autarky experiment
Millions died of starvation
And their economy was a wreck

It was when Deng Xiaoping opened up the Chinese economy to foreign capital, foreign investment and market based economics that China grew in leaps and bounds.

Market based economic a ALWAYS WORK
Closing your borders does not work
It does not help you

India at some point tried the autarky experiment too (tho briefly) and they were fvcked too
Until they are practicing the market based economics and the economy is better even tho the country Is still corrupt

Buhari mentality belongs to the era of autarky

Giving incentives to achieve policy objectives is what works

The Nigerian telecoms sector is testament to that.

The Nigerian banks are also testament to that.

Figures we don't know.... what we can agree on is Nigeria is not producing enough rice to meet consumer demand.

Figures is where u should have started ur discussion from. B4 I share d figures with u, let me tell u what buhari & osinbajo said about this issue this year.

In February this year, osinbajo said that Nigeria produces 90 per cent of the rice it consumes.

Buhari only last month said that Nigeria has attained food security and that d country is now self sufficient in food production especially in rice production.

According 2u, "what we can agree on is Nigeria is not producing enough rice to meet consumer demand".

Its either u are wrong or buhari/osinbajo are wrong. Who is wrong?
