Removal Of Rickety Vehicles From Lagos Roads: Ultimatum Given By State Govt. by Ravon: 8:45am On Mar 14, 2020 |
...Sensitises Articulated Vehicle Owners on Road Safety As part of the efforts to further unlock traffic gridlocks and ensure free vehicular movement across the metropolis, the Lagos State Government, through its Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), has organized a stakeholder meeting to sensitize articulated vehicles owners about the need to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before putting them on roads. The sensitization, according to the State Government, became necessary in view of the frequent traffic jam resulting from the frequent breakdown of rickety vehicles and articulated trucks that daily ply Lagos roads and the danger they constitute to citizens’ safety. The Director, Vehicle Inspection Service, (VIS), Engr. Akin George Fashola who chaired the meeting, stated that the stakeholders' meeting was aimed at bringing different players together to educate them on government policy relating to the movement of dry and wet cargo within the State as well as intimating them with regulations guiding road carnage by articulated trucks in Lagos. He added that the increased traffic in the metropolis, occasioned by the regular breakdown of articulated vehicles, indicated the need to inculcate the culture of safety in motorists plying Lagos roads as well as enlighten them on the need to be more cautious and responsible in their daily operations. Fashola warned that the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) will, henceforth, uphold the State government’s zero tolerance for rickety trucks and articulated vehicles to promote safety on Lagos roads. He disclosed that there was an agreement among participants that a period of six weeks be given all stakeholders involved in haulage movement to revalidate their documentation and put their vehicles in a proper working condition, failure of which such vehicles would be impounded by the VIS. While warning operators of articulated trucks, tippers, and tankers to comply with all guidelines on Safety and Standard operations or be sanctioned, the Director listed some areas of agreement between all parties, such as zero-tolerance for rickety trucks and articulated vehicles on Lagos roads; all drivers of articulated vehicles should ensure they hold the required Class-G drivers license; and there should be adequate publicity on radio, television, and newspapers on government directives to sensitize other members absent from the gathering. Other decisions include the following: all articulated vehicles that develop mechanical problems should not be allowed to load or leave their loading points; there should be a collaboration with haulage companies that own computerized testing facilities that meet global standard practice to enhance compliance and safety; there should be continuous training and retraining of drivers, among others. - The highpoint of the stakeholder's meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the State Government and Trucks Owners to ensure safety and free vehicular movement on Lagos roads. https://lagosstate.gov.ng/blog/2020/03/14/lasg-gives-ultimatum-for-removal-of-rickety-vehicles-from-roads/ 3 Likes

He should introduce road tax too to deter people from buying cars they don't need. Abandon vehicles should be left in personal drive or junkyards. 46 Likes 5 Shares |

Lagos State Govt ask yourself are the roads good anuf for our cars? Nigerians are facing undue hardship already and any move to further complicate things is not welcome. 13 Likes 1 Share |

Lol... Those danfos should be the prime target.. Death traps - Tyre fit just fly comot whilst in motion, wipers don't work, horns don't work, smoking exhausts etc.. Unclean - You can't have a white attire on and not get stained. It's impossible except you take extra extra extra precaution. Unreliable - They can decide to offload their passengers anywhere as it suits them Ugly - Simply put, they're an eyesore. VERY uncomfortable - Wooden seats with no cushions with metal backrests. . You'll get to your destination fatigued. Unhygienic - Oil smears everywhere, dirty seats, uncleaned windows etc.. 82 Likes 3 Shares |

Good move. This is one of the problems that make Lagos a glorified shi.thole. When they said Nigeria is the Africa's worst in availibility of potable water, they actually meant lagos. other cities (could have) scored reasonably well, but only Lagos discouraged the researchers from examining the whole nigeria any further. The concentration of slump, low lives and dirt called lagos must be brought to an end. #nomansland The African Mentalist. 18 Likes |

Ok only if these VIO decide to discharge their duties deligently without taking bribes but if other wise then it will be business as usual, very crazy to be held up in traffic when you have an important appointment to keep due to break down of these trucks on our roads. Crazy 1 Like |

Lagos State government is really trying with all these laws, to restore sanity to the roads. But the major challenge is Implementation. After 2weeks of any order, they all return to status quo. Okada and keke Don already returned for my area. |

This is the ultimatum, that would reduce traffic....... 50% of cars on our roads, are rickety............... I sent a message to Ambode about 3 years ago, to take this step, he ignored me as usual...... The only way this would work, would be through 100% enforcements. I hope they have invested in vehicle pounds........... |

I think Oyo State government should also consider this policy. The number of rickety vehicles especially those expired MICRA and BUSES on the streets of Ibadan is embarrassing. But I doubt if our governor (who seems to running a populist government) could ever contemplate such policy. 4 Likes

There is a problem with the Nigerian System. In the developed world, all vehicle are subject to Road worthiness test every 3 - 6 months, that test determines which vehicle is fit to ply the road or not and would only be allowed to move on the road when all necessary repairs have been done and vehicle certified road worthy. But in Nigeria reverse is the case,VIO will issue road worthiness pass without even seeing the vehicle or the driver. 2 Likes |
