Go to Asian countries and see the response you will receive if you try to break their customs.

I have always wanted to ask this question for sometime now cos i don't really understand the mystery behind it.

I went to a shop to buy some provision, i tried to pay the seller with my left hand because my right hand was occupied with my tool box, she insisted i must give her the money with my right hand which i have no problem with, but i really want to know the reason so i thought bringing it up here will go a long way hearing different people's opinions.

People see it as a bad manner, but to me, it means nothing. I believe one cannot wash right hand effectively without the left hand. So why the condemnation? Is there any religious reference to back it up with?

Thank you!!!!

It's Igbo culture not your society.

Two words:

Iliteracy and Superstition

Some Nigerians even go as far as believing a left handed child is a sign of bad luck.

Just last year I had to confront my nephew's teacher for trying to force him to stop using his left hand to write.
Nigerians and our stupid superstitions

Not only culturally rejected, religion also reject esp. Christian and Muslims. But op, Can u use your right hand to clean your yansh after poo?

Substantiate your point. Washing bum with right or left hand is inconsequential. Prove it scripturally that using left hand is bad. If it is then why did God give it to us?

I think this is as a result of the name given to left hand by our people. Especially the Yoruba, they regard the left hand as 'Owo osi' and Osi is a bad thing as far as the Yoruba are concerned. Thus using left hand to give or receive something is regarded as bad habit. Also, Islamic religion also frowns at using left hand because it is regarded as a satanic habit.
No
There is a difference between "Osi" left and "Osi" rubbish....even in pronunciation.
Get your facts right

when I was a child, I was a southpaw, but my parents wouldn't allow me to make use of it, they always scold at me not until I changed to the right hand.
psychologically, it has been affecting me negatively mostly in my academic and lifestyle, because when I make a research about people who are compelled to use the right hand instead of the normal nature, I found to know that it really affect their brain.
barrack Obama is a southpaw, babatunde fashola and so many others are southpaw and I see no reason while people should condemn it.

Not saying you're one but that is how sheep behave. They follow mindlessly, without questioning, even things that do not make any sense.
Someone asks a valid question, and knowing there's no answer that makes logical sense, you use the "follow our culture" mantra. Na wa.

Its very barbaric and tormenting..
I grew up left handed and it was hell for me... One day in my mums shop i already had it up to here..I offered a customer her balance with my left hand because i was so used to it, she scolded my as if i stole from her and i got angry and fired back..
I told her to cut off her left arm if she feels it is so useless nd both her and my mum were suprised..i was about 15 or so...

Not only Nigerians. I watched a Korea film where the boss rejected the same act from his junior one. So, don't condem Nigerians alone for this it is universe.

I think is African mentality. I left my 1yr and 8 months old baby with my mother some years ago because of a job I got in a far away place from my own place. about 2yrs later I came to pick up my daughter and I discovered she was using left. I tried telling my mother that I was displeased but she quickly told me that God created all hands and never condemned any, so why should we? That statement changed my mentality towards it, and when I wanted to register her in school, the teacher warned me and my husband not to disturb her on the hand she finds convenient. Since then, she's being using left and God helping her, she's being doing wonderfully well academically. So whether right or left, God made them all and we shouldn't condemn any when we can't even make a single finger.

Most Africans wipe their butts with the left hand after pooing. Hence it is considered an insult to use the same hand when handing something to elders.

Apologies to lefties.

I use my right hand to wipe my butt. It is more accurate.

Even in the Bible Joseph before de died called his two sons both the eldest and the youngest, he switched hands by placing the left on the eldest and placed the right on the younger one, he wanted the younger son to be greater than the eldest son.
