This may not be economically correct. Your single-dwelling reasoning breaks down completely when weighed against the concept of marginal cost of production. So what is marginal cost? In economics we define marginal cost as the change in the total cost that arises when the quantity produced is incremented by one unit. That is saying the cost added by producing one additional unit of a product or service.

Lets conceptualise this by some real production example. So for example, now that Christmas is upon us, you were contracted to supply Christmas hamper to a company. If the initial cost of producing the first hamper is N10,000, the per unit cost is N10,000. If the marginal cost of producing one additional unit is lower than the per-unit price, the producer has the potential to gain a profit. Now due to the benefit of economy of scale, if the per unit cost of producing 10 hampers is N9,000, there is the insentive to produce more hampers because the more you produce, the cheaper it gets. Now what has this to do with building vertically or building horizontally? Plenty.

To bring this in lets settled for some simplifying assumptions:

We will assume that the total cost of building a two wing 2 bedroom unit is N5,000,000.

We will again assume that the cost of decking the unit is N3,000,000.

At this stage the magic of the concept of marginal cost sets in.

To build horizontally, the marginal cost of building the next unit is N5,000,000 with a total cost of N10,000,000. This is very clear, the investor needs to find another N5m and build the next unit and he has invested a total of N10m in the same plot of land.

But to build vertically, the analysis changes drastically as the investor needs to find an additional N3m for decking and if to go by your three floors reasoning, the investor need to find yet another N3m to deck the 'top' of the unit. So to achieve the same unit in your single-dwelling concept, the investor will use N11,000,000 to achieve the next unit that N5m would have achieved with a horizontal concept.

It is cheaper to build horizontally than vertically. It is only advisable to build vertically if the land will cost an arm and a leg as a result of location and the budget is big, real big.

I detest burglary on windows. It takes away the finesse and the beauty of the window area.

Just as Egun said, a determined armed robber could easily take down the burglaries. See how beautiful the windows are looking. Install these big burglaries and look at the windows again

I want to see a crystal clear windows with live flower cups or pots rather than looking at a prison-like burglary and thick nets. Our peculiar situation and circumstances in Nigeria is one of the reasons the interior of our homes are not that all eye catching.

Back in the USA I had a different idea of what living in Nigeria was all about. I’m wiser now. I think.

I have direct experiences.

Thief: A close neighbor said it took about a minute and a half for the thief to be inside his bedroom via the window with burglary. There are various types and sizes of metal used for burglary. There’s hollow and there’s solid. There’re small size and big size. In my humble opinion if you’re not using solid in big size then it’s a waste of money.

Fire: I’ve watched two houses burn to the ground here in Ibadan. Fire trucks eventually arrived but well after the damage has been done. If anyone was home they’ll have died from the noxious fumes. I don’t think our government tests building and furnishings for release of dangerous fumes in the houses.

I have burglary in my BQ. I’m not sure if I’ll have burglary on my main house.

I reall with that Nigeria would adopt liberal gun laws like we have a n the USA. I also wish that we have a Castle Doctrine.

What I have now is a staggered level of increasingly high levels of defense.

Level 1: High fence topped with razor wife. A casual thief will move to a softer target but a determined one will simply cut and slide them to one side.

Level 2: My Dobermans. I was all giddy as they grew up into terrifying defense animals but saddened to hear of dogs being jazzed to sleep during robberies.

Level 3: Burglary at the windows and allegedly armored entry door. Well I now know the burglary bars are a wishful item and sledgehammers made quick work of a similar door. Also folks have said homeowners end up opening doors for the thieves anyway.

Level 4: Safe room. If all else fails the. It’s to hide in the safe room. It’s hidden but they’ll eventually find it.

Level 5: Last resort is the scorched earth defense. My lips are sealed.

Baba is well prepared. Honestly, if you are not game with the strong iron bars, all those ones that comes with the windows are rubbish. Even me myself can pull out those empty pipes.

May be the burglary is for petty thieves. Hardened and determined armed rubber knows no boundary. I saw where they used plier to clip off and brought down an entire barbed wire mesh on the fence and climbed over and into the compound.

But for gun liberalisation, hmmm!! We will be having dead bodies on the road every day.
