I don't why some people are blaming ACN. Obasanjo from Ogun state, a PDP Nigeria president for 8 years.

Gbenga Daniel aka OGD an Ogun state PDP governor for 8years.

Ibikunle Amosun present Ogun state governor approximately 1 year.

Please, wise Nairalanders connect the dots.

[b]People trying to justify whose responsibility it is to fund this and similar schools across Nigeria are missing one crucially important point. It is the Citizens of Nigeria (not simply children of Obafemi Owode or Ogun State) who are suffering here. It is future Nigerians and the future of Nigeria that is being destroyed and eroded here. How, in the future, will the majority of children schooling in this sort of environment, not be slaves of some sorts to their counterparts growing up in the likes of UK, USA, Canada, Italy, France, etc? Fellow Nigerians, this is beyond party politics. It's not about asking the Ogun State Government to go to Edo State and borrow ideas. I'll be surprised if there are no Edo, Delta, Anambra children in this school. It's, therefore, about holding public office holders accountable. Imagine how the LGA Chairman was complaining about previous governments. Since assuming office, what has he done, even if only to stop the villagers from 'desecrating' the school grounds. Many thanks, in deed, to the reporter who highlighted this issue. Shame to the Christian and Muslim religious leaders walking the corridor of power in all States of the federation and in Abuja, 'cavorting' with government officials, past and present, but failing to ensure that the Citizenry enjoys the dividends of democracy. I really feel sorry for Nigerian children - in any States of the federation - who, through no fault of theirs, are being made to put up with this kind of degrading situation when those who are in government today had it so good when, in years gone bye, they were children and school pupils.

Don't say that oooo. Nairalanders and South Westerners treat ACN and their members like pastors. Evenn if they steal, molest or defraud people etc. The quote is "Touch not my annointed".

For a Governor who can spend 1.3billion on a single road, People are still defending that type of school in his state that PDP. bla bla bla.

I have never seen such schools (except abandoned ones) even in rural areas. I agree though that the matter should not be over politicised.

Why is it that Ogun state is always in the frame though? It points to a systemic failure in my opinion.
Here's a vid on the same issue, the villagers actually use the school as a toilet:

. I think we ve forgoten that this present ACN government ve not spend up to two year in office, about two weeks ago they flag up reabilitation of over 200 public schools in ogun state, I think quetion we should be asking is what did PDP use their 8yrs for while in office because we can not blame govt that is not up to 2yrs for this kind of massive delapilated structure in those schools, everything shld be put at the door steps of PDP

Isn't this a great example of what's gone wrong in this country? There's a major problem and instead of thinking of ways to solve it and putting pressure on government, we play the game of my ethnic group is better than yours, my political party is better than yours, my religion is better than yours. We've been playing this game for decades and look where it's gotten us.

I believe the solutions to these problems lie in Professor Fafunwa's idea from the 1980s (wider scope in education) and Dr Ezekwesili's idea (alternative management and competitive management) and in greater and honest activism from the people.

We urgently need to implement these three things in order to transform our system of education.

Evidently d 40 lap toppers are on hand to see who will mention Jonathan bc pry schs fall within d purview of local and state govts.

But these are direct results of fraudulent diversion of funds and monumental corruption. Things that EFCC and ICPC are given billions yrly to stop. They however remain under the attorney General and d president used only for purposes of blackmail and keeping 'errant' troublemakers in line.

Roads remain death traps, Ngerians die needlessly everyday in poorly equipped hospitals, armed robberies and kidnapping, these are symptoms of a deep malady and an irresponsible and inept fed govt.

I believe we should examine solutions so that we'll know what we want our governments to do. That seems more productive than "my ethnic group is better than yours".

Dr Ezekwesili's idea.

Unfortunately Dr Ezekwesili's idea leaked and the people that saw the leak did not understand it. They thought she wanted to sell Federal Government Unity Schools. This lead to a fear campaign. "They want to sell the schools. If they sell the schools only the rich will be able to afford education. If they sell the schools, teachers will be sacked. Etc. However, that's not what the plan is about.

The Plan

What, in Nigeria, are known as "Public Secondary Schools" are owned and controlled by state governments. Dr Ezekwesili conducted research into these schools (and also Federal Government Unity Schools) and declared that no right thinking and sane person who has a choice would send their child to a public secondary school. She also discovered that Unity Schools had more cleaners than teachers and that the authorities had stopped inspecting the quality and standards of schools.

She therefore declared that public secondary schools should not be left to the states alone, but management and inspection of schools should be a collaborative effort of the Federal, State and Local governments.

The plan was to contract out the management of the schools to private companies, while the government monitors quality and standards of the school. This would also bring competition to the management of the schools, with each company/school competing for the tag of the best school in the state, etc. Companies whose schools do not measure up to standards would have their contracts terminated and another company would be asked to step in. The companies would be paid by the Federal, State and Local governments.

The monitoring team would be comprised of federal, state and local government officials. Parents-teachers association (PTA) officials and officials of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) were added to the monitoring team after protests, strikes and demonstrations were held because people thought the government wanted to sell Unity Schools.

(Unity Schools are secondary schools owned and run by the Federal Government. They include Kings College, Queens College and the Federal Government Colleges).

So, what do you think of this idea? Would it work? Is it a better funding/management alternative?
