Larufa: The Central Bank of Nigeria has announced that it is going to introduce a N5,000 note into the system.

The faces of three prominent Nigerian female activists are to be used on the new note. They are those of late politician and social mobiliser, Margaret Ekpo (1914 - 2006); late politician and activist Hajia Gambo Sawaba (1933 - 2001) and late politician and women's right activist Funmilayo Kuti (1900 -1978).

There are more than 1,001 reasons we should be concerned with this demonic and unwholesome move by the CBN Governor, He is indirectly saying in a clear tone language that, “come 2013, Nigeria will become a place strictly for the rich” and where do the masses fall? Definitely, the masses are not in their plans, what a way to go! At a time unemployment is at its highest, astronomical rises in prices of common goods, insecurities, surging population pressure, devaluation of our currency, inflations, lack of basic amenities in our urban areas, underdevelopments in rural areas, uncontrolled brain drains, a staggering GDP, workers paid in dribs and drabs, alarming crime rates among the youths, tensions about the unity of the country soaring ominously, and many more. The only thing Mallam (indeed he is a Mallam) Sanusi can think of is to take us back to the prehistoric age economically so that those legislooters (he was trying to appease as a result of the autonomy clause they were threatening to remove from his office) can have bundles of =N=5,000 notes bundles to spray at their wild parties on ladies of easy virtues. These were the same rogues Sanusi accused last year (2011), of spending 25% (imagine that) of the recurrent expenditure of the country’s budget on their own overheads!

What do you expect immediately =N=5, =N=10 and =N=20 are changed into coins, of course they pale into insignificance, meaning your pure water sachet, bread, garri will definitely turn to essential commodities……but why are these guys so heartless? I mean there are more than enough reasonable things to fix (as listed above) instead of a trivial thing like this. Oh my God! What a country governed by Ignoramus!!!

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country is the yardstick for measuring how rich and poor a country is. It is the broadest measure of aggregate economic activity and encompasses every sector of the economy or simply put, the total value of goods and services produced in a country. If GDP grows at a higher rate than the population, standards of living are said to be rising. If the population is growing at a higher rate than GDP, living standards are said to be falling. Think about this, there has not been any reasonable change in our GDP right from 1960 at least when one put into consideration the exchange rate. For instance, our balance-of-payments problem was revealed in the foreign trade figures for 1960. In that year exports were valued at £161,000,000 and imports at £215,000,000. Thus, there was a trade deficit of over £50,000,000, compared to about £20,000,000 in 1959 and £31,000,000 in 1958. Is it different from what we have today? Are we not spending more on imports than what we realize from exports? In the year 1958 it was on record that, Nigeria was the world's largest exporter of groundnuts, palm oil, and palm kernels, but what is our story today? In today’s world the GDP is based on 3 sub-units namely; (i) Agriculture, forestry and fishing; (ii) Industry (manufacturing, mining, construction and transportation) and (iii) Services (sector catering for small and medium scale industries - entrepreneurs). Unfortunately, the services sector that we ought to give a big boost to is jettisoned for unnecessary over spending on capital expenditures in our budgets.

Note: A higher percentage in Service over Industry is a sign of a growing and matured economy while a higher percentage in Industry over Service is a sign of an ailing economy. The question is where are we today? Of course, an ailing economy! Indeed, this is what you get when a Mallam is your CBN Governor!
