Billyonaire: I love the new traffic law, but 1 year is too much for that offense. By the way, someone please help me tell PHCN to take light for my estate. Too much of everything is a disease.

Seun: If the punishment does not fit the crime, it is not justice. 1 year jail term does not fit this crime, and that's all there is to it.
When we read about Shariaists stoning girls for getting pregnant, we are indignant, because even though it works, it's not just.
The solution to petty crimes is not to make the punishment unreasonable and wicked, but to enforce reasonable penalties consistently.
1 year jail term is OK: you have to consider the level of hardship the crime imposes on other citizens, how rampant is the crime and how difficult has it been to stop this kind of crime in the past.

Interesting! I wish this law could be enforced in Rivers State. They drive like animals here. Kudos to Gov. Fashola. Other states should emulate this and who knows maybe sanity would return to this country.

The problem is not with the law,the problem is with the officials...what i went through when lasma impounded my car on three occasions,i don't wish it to my enemies. However, the fear of lasma is the beginin of road worthiness...

Well, so sad for the overzealous driver. The guy was probably scared he might be robbed of the money inside the hold up.
The law is the law. Even the bank is only after the release of their bullion van.
Its good to apply discretion when sent on an errand.

cyril83: how does d judgement worth d crime?...1 year jail term is fucking much,d offender is not a criminal forGodsake

Kindly answer these questions and justify your point:

1. What kinda judgement is been passed to murderers?

2. What if an accident occur in the process of violating the traffic law, and leads to someone's death. What kinda of judgement do you think the violator deserve?

But seriously the way people try to beat the traffic in Naija is very annoying, the worst is that they end up worsening the hold up sef.

Though i do think the punishment is too much for the offense.

Bullion van drivers and Government officials are the worst traffic offenders. If possible they will jump over cars on the road.
Re: New Lagos Traffic-Law Catches First-Victim - Bullion Van Driver by ojofu(m): 5:59pm On Aug 29, 2012
i thought bullion van drivers always travel with police escorts either behind him or in front of him, and this one wey the guy carry money, i very sure that he had an escort with him. If he had an escort with him then this story is not complete. I stand to be corrected sha.

kj_hova: 1 year jail term for a civic offence in Lagos State in the same Federation where Tafa Balogun & Mrs. Ibru bagged 6 months for criminal offences?! Something is sure wrong with this.

I see police men drive against traffic almost every day i hope one of them is brought to book

We ve so gotten used to dis tns everyday dt we find it hard to change. I believe no man is above d law nt even d bullion van containing money. True. That's what killed the Buhari regime. When penalties are too severe the the first victim is consistent application and when the blindfolded lady with the sword and scales can't see but can hear, favouratism arises and the whole thing collapses.

Anyway you can understand the sentiments behind such laws when you fall victim to Lagos trafficado.

slimdiggi: undecidedif he gets a good lawyer he might be acquited

reduced sentence but most definitely not an acquital when he has confessed to the offence. If the law is a strict liability one then there is no escaping it except the LAWMA decide not to prosecute. Once it gets to court, he would undoubtedly be found guilty.
