Seun: If the punishment does not fit the crime, it is not justice. 1 year jail term does not fit this crime, and that's all there is to it.
When we read about Shariaists stoning girls for getting pregnant, we are indignant, because even though it works, it's not just.
The solution to petty crimes is not to make the punishment unreasonable and wicked, but to enforce reasonable penalties consistently.

Right on point there. this amounts to killing a fly with a sledge hammer. this is injustice in the face of justice!

did you call it a petty crime?
let's assume unfortunately, the van knocks down an innocent passer-by,what will your judgement be?if this had happened,we will still be thesame set of people who will criticize the government for not putting measures in place to guard against such occurence.
if na Oyinbo make such law,we go clap for them,so far na our own government/people make such law,na bad law.
may God help our way of reasoning.

kj_hova: 1 year jail term for a civic offence in Lagos State in the same Federation where Tafa Balogun & Mrs. Ibru bagged 6 months for criminal offences?! Something is sure wrong with this.

This law will not hold ground if contested up to the Supreme court. Oh how I miss Gani
i hope you miss Ganiyat too?
please, tell us more on how this law wouldn't hold ground if contested on the supreme law court,Mr Ganiyat.

This is madness! I still don't understand why a first time offender, who committed a driving offence could be jailed for a year - without an option of fine. This is pure jungle justice.

A fine should be appropriate for this type of offence, anything more than that, is just pure madness. You can't treat people like animals, just because you want to sanitize the system.

Everything works backwards in Nigeria smh.
Re: New Lagos Traffic-Law Catches First-Victim - Bullion Van Driver by profola2be(m): 3:06am On Aug 30, 2012
tlops: one year jail term seems too much for the crime. suspend his driving license shocked. 3 month community service, reasonably heavy fine.

like someone noted, the cost of housing a person for a year is irrelevant in Nigeria since they'll packed like fish. but seriously I wish the guy the best of luck: Goodluck.
see me see wahala.
which driver's licence
?
is it the one you could make order for in the comfort of your room?

Desola:

Did he break the law? Yes!

What is such a person called? - An offender.

Is the offence committed found in the criminal code? - Yes

What is manner of offence does that make it? - Criminal

The offender is therefore called: A criminal.

desola,do u own a car?i doubt this,cos of ur responses,com to okokomaiko,where d road network is in shamble,and traffic jam can last 4hours,and more,especially in d evening.u'll scream.at dis side,one way is ur sure bet,due largely to bad road,else u sleep on d road..i'm not a pro-one way,but other corrective measure would be welcomed..

I know the disobedience traffic law in Lagos is horific - sometimes also caused by unbelievably terrible roads.

Still, I think this is draconian, and Gov. Fashola (still the best governor in Nigeria) would have to bactrack on this one soon.

You cannot put someone in jail for a traffic offense not involving death or injury for one year - in fact you should not even jail them!
Someone needs to take the Lagos State Government to Federal Court on this one.

We should not embark on Sharia-like law enforcement in the SW. A fine, suspended licence, and impounding the vehicle for a period of time are all good options.

There is no need to start crowding jails and creating hardened criminals by carting working people to jail for misdemeanours.

Fasola has less than 4years to go.PDP will use his draconic traffic law to score political point during campaign.oga fasola, pls take it easy with lagosian.a law is meant to correct, and not to kill psychologically..repair al d bad roads, and see who will take one way..lagosians attitude are product of the society they live...

Not like I'm in support of reckless driving O. I understand driver's situation. It's not a good feeling, being in a loaded bullion van and getting caught in traffic. And almost everyone believes you are carrying tons of money. Not a good thing at all.

i belive this is a clear message to bullion van drivers and their employers that it is no longer business as usual, and they are not exempt from the law.

susku mayaya:
Most of the drivers are seconded staff i.e not a direct staff of the bank. So The driver is on his own while the bullion van is the bank's property and hence, their action.
The driver is a staff of bankers warehouse, a cash-in-transit company. The bullion van is not d banks property but that of d company. BW only has d responsibility of transporting d banks cash, that was why they brought another van to evacuate the money. Mind u, there was at least one policeman in that van with the driver who must have geared him up to drive against traffic..,and now d poor guy is on his own. Stupid company, my cousin worked for one of them and he almost died in a road ambush. The van is always more important than the employees cos dem get plenty standby drivers.

I am sorry but I disagree with you. A person driving against traffic is a menace to both pedestarians and other road users on that lane. Not to talk of a complete nuisance. What is wrong is wrong, which d so called "victim" had admitted. 10 yrs ago, how many Nigerians wore seat belts while droving? Lastma came ard and things slowly took shape...now its a necessity. We wear d belts almost automatically. Abeg, he shld face d music in jail (which wldnt be up to a year considering d time d case will keep being adjourned) and may it serve as a big deterrent for those who do it as a habit esp military personnel and danfo drivers!

Were there no Police escort vehicles with the Bullion Van? If the Bullion Van had Police escorts they too should be arrested for I'm sure they'd drive against traffic too.

A month inside the prison as an inmate in NIGERIA is enought to put "some brain" into any slighty insane human like someone driving against traffic. For God sake, a year with no option of fine as a first offender is rather TOO MUCH. A month imprisonment with fine and community service could suffix here. Mind you on getting out, anyone in a prison for that long based on such offense will become more emboldened and a criminal because he'ill believe like most of us do that justice/punishment has not been appropriately served and the society has not been fair on him. Seriously o, the punishment for the offense should be reviewed. Pity

basisop: Haba! 1 year jail term for driving against traffic? Too much for the crime.
One year jail term is even too small ƒσя driving against traffic. Just 2 days ago a passenger bus collided with a trailer driving against traffic, 10 passengers died leaving only one survivor. Driving against one way is equivalent to murder.

Don't be silly! That is such a lame excuse for not punishing an offender - "is there even space availale in those prisons" what an argument!

I wonder if you would be so concerned about the stupid stigma if he had hit you - an innocent pedestrian. What irrational mentality! The same law that is seeking to protect you and your rights as a pedestran or road user is the same one you're kicking against. I just don't understand Naija people.

erico2k2: YOU GUYS NOW HAVE A GOAT FOR A GOVERNOR
So all of you are agreeing with the fact that the Driver should hold up and wait for traffic to clear in LAGOS full of rouges is someone MAD or something. The Bullion Van has MONEY in it and its not meant to stand for more than 1 minute,it should be allowed to drive against traffic with a warning siren to alert oncoming traffic, SOON an AMBULANCE DRIVER will soon be arrested for driving one way then you guys will agree now that YOU GOT A GOAT IN POWER, rubbish angry angry angry

You've just displayed how BRILLIANT you are. Bravo! Now tell me.

1. What is a LAW?

2. What is the whole essence of a LAW?

3. If a LAW wouldn't favor you, won't you cover up your LAPSES? (security wise)

Lastly, between LIFE and MONEY which one is more IMPORTANT to you?

***Now who is a GOAT?

If some of u have ever being to/stayed in d east, you'd understand how delicate a bullion van is. How many of u don witness bullion van road robbery before? If d type of robbery that happens in d east were to happen on a busy lagos road just once, am very sure dia would b an amendment to that traffic law.
