He develops paresthesias over the radial and volar aspects of the forearm. During the accident, he probably injured which one of the following nerves?C- musculocutaneous nerve. Or antebrachial nerve...it passes behind the cephalic vein and divides opposite the elbow joint into a volar and dorsal branch. It originates from C5,6,7 of the lateral cord of brachial plexus , innervates muscles in the anterior (flexor) compartment of the arms and lateral surface of the forearm. The muscles are coracobrachialis, biceps brachii, brachialis,.... Damage to the nerve causes inability to flex and supinate the elbow joint, which if not treated causes weakening and wasting of the muscles of the arms. 4 Likes |

Johnfavour: Please, the USMLE exams, are there writing centers here in naija and how much does the exams cost? No, there's no writing center in Naija I think the only african country with a centre is Ghana. Total cost depends slightly on the country where you'll be writing. Rough estimate is about USD1200 for step 1, I think about 1500usd for step 2 ck. You can only write step 2 CS in the states. Not sure of the cost. And I absolutely have no idea about step 3 as it's the least of my worries now. |

To add, for 500 &600 level, there are MCQs, theory, clinicals(short case and long case) and orals. To pass, you must fulfill the criteria of having 1) a Pass Mark of 50% 2) pass in clinicals. Meaning if you have more than 50% and fail the clinicals, you have failed. Clinicals comprises of short case and long case. In short case, your clinical skills are examined and graded. In the long case, you're given a patient to take a history, make a physical examination and state how you will manage successfully. This doesn't apply in all the schools. Some schools use an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) pattern for clinicals. 3 Likes |

lomaxx: A 45 year old, previously healthy woman presents with jaundice, confusion and fever. Initial physical examination is unremarkable except for scattered petechiae on the lower extremities, scleral icterus, and disorientation on mental status examination.A plasmapheresis |
Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by lomaxx: 7:21am On Sep 07, 2014 |
ogagusps3: A plasmapheresis Correct answer. In the question, 5 things were obvious 1)hemolytic anemia (fragmented RBCs on blood film, low haematocrit, increased total and conjugated bilirubin) 2) thrombocytopenic purpura (low platelet count, petechia, ) 3) renal abnormality (increased bun and creatinine) 4)Neurologic disorder (confusion, disorientation) 5) fever These features are very suggestive of a thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura(TTP). Anytime you see a question with the pentad of those features up there, its a TTP. If you have no Neurologic manifestation and more renal involvement, it's a Hemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (HUS). The treatment of choice is a plasmapheresis(plasma exchange). Corticosteroids, splenectomy, aspirin etc are subtherapeutic. Happy Sunday. 2 Likes |

Why are pathologists so underrated in Nigeria? Why are they always facing unnecessary rivalry from the MLS? Isn't the pathologists supposed to be the overseer of d labs? When I read some comments about how people see pathologists, I feel like crying..I want to be a pathologist but I don't like what I'm seeing.. |

When I read some comments about how people see pathologists, I feel like crying..I want to be a pathologist but I don't like what I'm seeing..Pathologists are underated world over. Not as glamorous as other specialities; they work behind the scenes. The problem with MLS will blow over, as soon as MDCN performs its regulatory duties effectively. Pathologists are trained to run and head medical labs world over; why shld Nig be an exception. Follow your passion and dreams. Specialists are few, more so pathologists. Work dey plenty. The guy who discovered Ebola is a pathologist; i think he was even a resident then. Google him; also Royal college of Pathologists. |
