Explosion at north Nigeria Catholic church

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) — Witnesses say an explosion has struck near a Catholic church in north Nigeria, a region under attack by a radical Islamist sect.

An Associated Press journalist heard the explosion after 9 a.m. Sunday in the city of Bauchi. The AP journalist said the blast occurred at St. John's Catholic Church in the city.

Emergency responders declined to immediately say whether there were casualties, though the explosion occurred during an early morning Mass.

A radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram has attacked churches throughout Nigeria's north with gunmen and suicide car bombers. The sect is blamed for more than 680 killings this year alone in Nigeria, according to an AP count.

people came out yest to protest about a private film made thousands of kilometres away while they have never come out to protest/openly criticize Boko Haram which operates right under their noses. Hypocrisy!!
Christians will continue to attend mass and go to church everyday because, nothing, even persecution can separate us from the love of Christ.

So sad. BH strikes when they want. So sad its the innocent people that will pay for the Government's inconpetence with their lives. JTF will be busy shooting DEAD anybody they can sight, as if killing suspects will end it, instead of gathering enough intelligence to prevent further attacks. And someone will pop up now to tell us to they are on top of the situation. Life really does not mean anything in Nigeria. Very sad.

Is it a repraisal as a result of its captured leader or taking out of anger because of the anti-islamic movie? These folks believe fighting for their god is obligatory. Shall we still sit back while they wear away our numbers? Impossible!

Police and military surrounded the church and did not allow journalists inside the cordon. Yushau Shuaib, a spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, said a suicide bomber targeted the church.

"Rescuers have evacuated the dead and injured," Shuaib said.

Muslims being the peace-loving and violence-averse people they are will surely protest against these killings of non-muslims by their radical brethren. This surely needs more reaction than a movie in America about a prophet who's been dead for centuries.
