•Arrested in Lagos, ‘deported’ to Anambra

By EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha and DURO ADESEKO, Lagos

The Onitsha South Local Government Area Secretariat Annex, in Anambra State, was built for administrative purposes. Today, it’s occupied quite alright, but not by workers alone. One of the halls in the complex has been turned into a refugee camp.

In the hall are men, women and babies, who were brought to Onitsha by agents of the Lagos State government and figuratively dumped on Anambra State government some weeks ago. Arrested in Lagos and “deported” to Anambra, these people are now refugees in their land. They have been given temporary accommodation and being fed by Anambra State government.

And their security is in the hands of operatives of Nigerian Civil Defence Corps (NCDC). Residents of the commercial city of Onitsha, especially those in Upper Iweka, woke up a few weeks ago to behold about 600 strange persons. It was gathered that they were brought in the dead of the night by a trailer, whose departure point was not known immediately.

The Anambra State government, on its part, had swung into action and took custody of the strange visitors. It was later learnt that they were people picked up from the streets of Lagos and moved to Onitsha. Speaking on this, Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, had charged the people to be alert and vigilant at all times. He thanked members of the public for bringing the information to him as soon as the destitute persons were dropped, adding that increased vigilance in all the communities in the state would help forestall this type of incident.

The governor had said he had directed law enforcement agencies to impound the trailer that brought the people as well as take custody of the inmates, pending investigations. Saturday Sun gathered that when investigation revealed that the inmates were ferried from Lagos, Governor Obi expressed sadness that Nigerians could be taken from one state in the country and dumped in another state. He was said to have confronted Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, at the Governors’ Forum parley on this.

The Lagos governor was said to have denied knowledge of this. Not satisfied, Governor Obi has written a petition to President Goodluck Jonathan. Giving a hint to this earlier, the governor had said his government would no longer tolerate a situation where people of the state were discriminated against or have their appointments terminated by other state governments, when indigenes of other states are gainfully employed in Anambra.

He said: “Investigations have shown that most of them (those ‘deported’ from Lagos) are not from Anambra State, but were dropped here. I am going to make a report to the Federal Government that Nigerians cannot be refugees in Nigeria. It is a dangerous trend. “We have seen a situation where Anambrarians working in other parts of the country are sent packing, even when they have served faithfully where they were.

We have not been doing the same thing. In schools, we have most of them from other states. Even teachers and students, most of them are in our school system where we offer free education benefit.” Obi said his government would not accept a situation where people were arrested in other states and repatriated to Anambra State. “The wisest thing to do is that they should have been handed over to us to be prosecuted, according to their offences. Most of them are not from Anambra State and we are investigating,” he said.

FASOLA IS A CHEAP LIAR and a fearer of Igbo

It is on the basis of the same cowardice that Dudu Negro, Aigbofa and other Yorubas here think that Lagos must first deport fellow Yorubas to be able to justify deportation of Igbo and hausa/fulani

A strong, fearless Yoruba (something scarce in those parts) will deport Igbos without sacrificing fellow Yorubas. Can Yoruba do that?

During the reign of Adebayo Alao-Akala, as governor of Oyo State, there was a protest about citizens of Oyo being dropped at the middle of the night in Ibadan, the state capital. The Lagos State government ignored the protest. Ogun State government also protested when its citizens were deported from Lagos. The protest was also ignored.

And Dudu Negro was lying the last time around that Yorubas did not complain about the deportation of Yorubas from Lagos.

Your case is simply a sad one.

Keep projecting your fear to the Yorubas. Igbos fear Yoruba like no man's business.

Its been what...., three or four days now and these people are still in a refugee shelter in Anambra. What doea that say abiut these people and the government of Anambra?

The people are homeless and dont have homes to go even on their own soil otherwise they should have left refugee shelter and go home. If their own soil have no home for them then they should become responsibility of the FG, not of Lagos State. Their people dont want to go get them.....their govt has no alternative mean of support for them beside keeping them in shelter and making a news mockery of them to stoke emotions.....FG has not stepped in to help them....but every mtthrfvkng ibo baboon is blaming Lagos State.....a forein land where these do no good parambulators were deported from.

If Obi is happy keepig them in shelter and other SE state govs dont have a problem with....and Gej has no means of supportbfor them....then why should Fashola loose his sleep?

You are obsessed with this deportation...are you one of the deportees?

Abia deported fellow ibos in 2011....so whats so alarming to you that Lagos deported fellow Yorubas?

This deportation and the follow uo to it says a lot about why ibos in the North would rathen stay up there in the middle of fire and risk life than return to their people.......their people in SE are worae than the predators up there killing them in the name of jihad.

I cant believe that four days or so afte and these people are still livig in a doggone sheler.

In Yorubaland we use name to locate family compound and relatives. This is what it possible for Lagos to place Yoruba deportees with their relatives for proper rehab. How do you trace roots in East? How do you place an individual to family or clan?

If yiu cant find their family then hand them to their clan or their Eze. what the hell!!!

Thats a polite way of telling Obi to focus on whats important. There are Anambra citizens in Lagos in gainful business and obedient to the law....if Obi is interested about the well being of his citizens those are the ones deserving focus. Its belittling for governors to be discussing case of deported hooligans whose contributions to society is deficient.

Obi need to grow up!

Destitutes, Traffic holdup Gala and ware hawkers, drug peddling 'imigrants', urban rearers of goats . . . What do these pple av in common ? . . . They av no business being in Lagos.
For those of us complaining about the fear of 'igbo' by the Yorubas . . . Even the Lagos breed 'igbos' fear their counterparts raised in the east . . . Every day we see buses arriving lagos from the east filled with human being but empty on their return home. . . Lagos is not a no man land where you can come in with a small bag and start selling gala or belts on the streets . . . Keep your taxes and develope the east into a Lagos.

The bit about the Igbo deportees still living in shelters is eye opening and quite disgraceful. Equally disgraceful is the deportation of these victims in the first place. One can understand why Fashola is now denying being knowledgeable of the deportation. SMH

but it can swear out my head that 8/10 of the deportees are not igbos. So you want peter obi to dump them into the river niger before you know that they are not igbos. Fassholeiola is a callous man but peter obi has igboman blood inside him.

Why did Obi not complain about the deportation of gainfully employed Anambras from Abia but will shamefully not only protest deportation of jobless hooligans but also write petition to Gej demanding intervention?

Whose interest should a governor push....lawfull citizens denied livelihoods or lawless criminals denied opportunities?

Obi need to get his prioprities right and act like a governor, not like a local govt chairman. ....he needs to grow up!

It's either u r blinded from the truth or you chose to live in denial, going by your utterances here. Even if all you are saying should be believed, is that the civilized way to deport? Like ritual killers that found their victims invalid? In a democracy? In the same country? Please pump ur brakes and stop ranting.

Stop making up your own facts if you want to be taken seriously. The notion that 80% of the deportees are not Igbos is very significant and if true, Obi should have made that a major talking point because not doing so would make Obi, senseless, incompetent, and a dummy - I'm sure that is not what you are implying.

@sheyuy, According to the story posted by the OP, Obi was said to have confronted Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, at the Governors’ Forum parley on the deportation issue. The Lagos governor was said to have denied knowledge of this.
