Since i put in manual gear oil in my car last week, the gear is now hard especially in gear1 and 2. My mech says the clutch disc needs a replacement. The question is why did it start immediately i added gear oil?

The hard shifting started because you probably put non fully synthetic manual gearbox oil in.

Peugeot recommended TOTAL 75W-80 for that box. But you won't find that oil grade in Nigeria, rather, TOTAL 85W-90, which is the closest. When you use the TOTAL 85W-90, the transmission will still work well, but the gear lever will become hard to shift into gears, especially 1,2 & 3. But with the recommended fluid, the shifting becomes very smooth.

I'm having the hard shifting too and in hindsight, it started when some guy drained my gearbox,
Please is this the reccomended, what quantity would fill the box http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Total-BV-75W80-Transmission-Manual-Gear-Box-Oil-TOT-149980-2-2x1L-2-Litre-/151312630583?pt=UK_Vehicle_Oils_Lubricants_Fluids&hash=item233aef8337

Yes, thats the recommended fluid.

The gearbox takes 1.75 litre (2 litres).

Sorry, I opened this thread specifically for Manual transmission. So, I would suggest you open a thread on your car issue or bring it up in Peugeot thread, if its a Lion. Thanks.

Have you checked if there is still oil or enough oil in it?

Your car owners manual will state the recommended mileage for manual gearbox fluid renewal. For example, Peugeot 504 GL owners manual stated drain and refill manual gearbox oil every 30,000 km. But other cars owners manuals may tell you not to change your manual gearbox oil, that the filled one from factory its for life, like my SV D9. Some don't keep to that claim. They would replace every 100,000km.

So, find out what your car owners manual says about your gearbox oil change interval.

Ironically, I'm not even qualified to post here, because after almost 20 years of driving manual cars, I have practically never had any trouble with my manual transmissions in ANY of the cars I have driven, except for one time I had to change all that clutch plate, disc, bla bla bla on a Benz 200, which the mechanic got right after two tries.

It is worth pointing out, for the benefit of the man who asked about which is better to learn with, that in some countries in Europe, when you are applying for your first license after learning how to drive, they give you two kinds of licenses: the first is a FULL drivers license given to those who learnt to drive with manual transmissions, and the second is a restricted license given to those who learnt how to drive with auto transmissions, which allows you to drive ONLY cars with automatic transmissions.

Real men drive manuals.

a bit of correction

you are not given option as you say but you are only given the licence according to type you did learn to drive and tested on

if you did learn, drive and tested on manual, then you get a manual licence, no need to be given automatic licence becoz you can drive an automatic striaght away

then for one who did learn, drive and tested on automatic its different thing altogether, your licence would be for automatics only and you wouldnt be able to drive manual straight away, you would need to be taught again to drive a manual

so you start as leaner again, get tested and pass and you are given your manual licence

as for UK a manual licence is like a two in one licence you can drive both manual and auto

but automatic is just for auto only

so learning a manual is the best
