Please for the benefit of everyone, I mean those that can and cannot speak.. Spoke.. Spake... English very well, can we have our own NIGERIAN ENGLISH. William Shakespeare is an English poet but the English he used then is not what we use today, Moral: English keeps changing everyday... Anyone trying to correct another persons english, should probably go back to william shakespeare. We as Nigerians we have the right to our own english. English has evolved and it is still evolving, the Anglo saxons, the romans. The truth is that English is actually a blend of many languages even the anglo saxon had a blend of the dialects of the west germanic tribes. Nigerian English all the way 1 Like |

MRbrownJAY: many may write I AM in such form to ease their typing by writing the word the easiest way possible.....I, for example, always write DONT, CANT, WONT SHOULDNT etc instead of can't, won't, shouldn't.......or better yet ITS instead of it's, and thats because its easier for me to write. now, if i have to write something more official then i certainly will know how to write these words properly. Nah who you wan make i ask |

I teach English Language in a private school, I want volunters readers to spot the remaining errors within the book. chreld_b: Speaking of wrong and careless usage of words, another disturbing trend I have noticed is the use of "molestation" in place of "molested". It has become so common on NL that I am almost beginning to think that people do it deliberately. You see sentences like these. "The bad men took her to the place and molestation her", "is it because she stole a blackberry that they molestation her". Now thats irritating. Bwhahahaha! Okay that one is all on SEUN. Apparently if the word R^PE is ever typed, NL is gonna burst into flames. Do you want NL to burst in to flames? Well do ya? Do ya?!!! SMH! What did NL ever do to you? 2 Likes |

dabigwalls:The word "organisation" is the correct spelling in standard British english. This is b'cos Nigerians use the British english as the official language. If it is spelt like this- organization, it is wrong b'cos that is the American english and we are not using American english as our official language b'cos we were not colonised by the Americans. Other words that should have "S" instead of "Z" are specialise, neutralise, analyse, socialisation, colonise and so on. 1 Like |

nikkyshyne: ^^ Lol chreld_b. That is nairaland's dictionary for you. The word R-A-P-E is being replaced with Molestation when you click on the submit button. Don't mind oga Seun. He did that with so many words. I find c.u..m which was replaced with 'precipitate' funny.imagine. Vib.rator is now presented as Romance-Machine. What if it was used in another context? The meaning'll be lost then. Seun has to step back a bit |

manny4life: @Op, you've tried. I'm no expert but I've seen so many misplaced or misused words that imply differently, nonetheless, as long as we understand them, it's all good. For instance, I've seen folks writing "I learnt that", I thought learnt wasn't correct but learned? Hey, if it fits their boat, so be it. "I learnt that" is correct. That's past participle. |

caukerzee: please, put more light to the 'being' and 'been'. I am one of those people who really forget the differences. Where do i use which? being is present tense while been is past tense. Eg: I'm being persecuted for a crime I know nothing about. That's present continuous. I have been persecuted for things I knew nothing about. Past tense. |

chronique: This example of the use of "learnt" is NOT past participle. This is why I insist on us learning our own languages and stop this Colo mentality on display here. "I learnt that" is PAST TENSE "I have learnt,I had learnt" those are past participles But I would rather be correcting Ijaw any day Can we taalk about OUR Yeon languages please |

I don't understand the "but it's not our language" argument. If you're learning English, then learn it well. We jump and shout when our names and words are butchered by foreigners. Don't mutilate someone else's language because it's not yours. Respect another's language the way we respect our own. 1 Like |

Don't mutilate someone else's language because it's not yours. Respect another's language the way we respect our own.If you travel widely you will observe that many people; Japanese,Germans,French etc speak English quite poorly and no one makes fun of them. Why do we make fun of ourselves for BAD ENGLISH but not for BAD YORUBA or BAD IGBO that is the koko and indicates COLO MENTALITY. Even in England many people have bad grammar. You hear people say "HE SHOULD OF" instead of HE SHOULD HAVE more often than not. As we speak probably less than 10% of literate Nigerians can write in their mother tongue let us deal with that |
