First and foremost, I want to encourage you to be focus and never allow this present situation to weigh you down. Your mum needs your assistance now than ever.

However, as a fellow engineer with experience, I don't want to believe that a civil engineer should be looking for job with d levels of problems in d country e.g housing shortage, flooding in different part of d country, bad roads etc. I want you to look inward to your problem, because the solution to your problem is simple. I will start by asking d following qtns:

1. What options did you specialise? Is it structural, highway, geotechnical etc? Can you interprete drawings? Can you analyse a structure etc?

2. Which city are u located? Because the perfect city for you right now is where opportunities are located. For example, flood location in several part of d country, major cities like abuja, lagos n other major cities where there is housing shortage. This is d basis of your profession, move closer to opportunities, and stop writing test up and down.

3. What major software can you utilise? E.g autocad, staadpro etc.

4. You can utilise the power of internet to your advantage and market your skills and experience because the world is a global village. So drop ur email address and for opportunity to solve problem, not only encouragement. You don't knw who might be reading your trend.

As an engineer, we are nature builders, drop an engineer in a village and see it transformed into a city. So, are you sure that you are one of us. If Yes, then bubble up for d challenge ahead, you are supposed to be job creator and not otherwise.

Finally, for me to continue with you, I will need your email address.

Pls, can you drop it here.

maasoap: Just because we don't know you, any lie is welcome. What is your business, how did you start, how much was your start up capital? Abi your business is a secret one?

If I answer you that'd be the 3rd time I'm answering that question on this forum, that you're unfortunate doesn't mean you go about calling others liars.
Since everything said online is a lie to you I won't bother answering you, if you want to know come over to Port Harcourt, I'd pay your return flight ticket and Hotel expenses so you see with your own eyes what my business is all about and I'd show you receipts & bank tellers I used in paying when I started up.
I'd rather put my money where my mouth is rather than argue here with you.

Life is a bitch. I graduated with a pass and I now have a good paying job. My appointment letter was handed to me on a platter of gold. No application, no interview, nothing.

victorD3: You studied civil engineering and still in a search for a job? Well I do't know what to say. I studied civil too and now keep 2 jobs, one is a government civil service and the other a private construction firm. Not that am from a rich background but because I love what I studied and understand how hot the profession is now. Step up your game and relocate to a more busy and infrastructural tasty city.
You're a civil servant, end of story. Or can I know the name of your "private construction firm", your registration ID, projects your "private firm" had handled before?

I took you up because of the simplicity of your advice: 4500naira for the registration, then business cards. And after that, contracts will just be flowing like ......... Or may be I'm having problem with your advice because I didn't understand the type of contracts you are talking about.

This is the best comment I have read here. U can sit down and blame everything and anything for your problems or you can take responsibility.

drop an engineer in a village and watch him transform the village into a town. This is a bomb.

And those who are seeing every obstacle to him starting his own construction firm are nothing but quitters and failures who do not hold themselves responsible for their lives.

Except you didn't get that 2.1 result with your head, u hv no reason to not know what to do. Nevertheless I believ down inside you, you want to be a musician.

I'm proudly a young hustling engineer providing solutions in the construction, electrical and software industries.

Your life is your creation.

man119: I graduated in 2006 with a second class upper and completed my youth service in 2007.

Knowing that I came from a poor background,I started preparing for aptitude tests and interviews during youth service, learning vital softwares within my financial capacity.

From 2007 till date,I have written so many tests and have being invited for several interviews, but at the end of the day, the" man know man" issue crops up (don't want 2 name firms) and those of us that are children of nobody get thrown into the gutters we came from.

The issue tearing me apart right now is my mother's health. After loosing my dad in the Liberian peace keeping mission (He was a soldier @ 342 field artillery brigade, owerri), she went through a lot of trauma and was diagnosed of a heart problem.

The little money I make from daily construction site struggles (instead of staying idle) is nothing close to what is needed for her surgery. Apart from looking for daily bread, I write stories and songs to take my mind away from all I'm going through.

Click the link below, scroll down to download to listen to one song I did

http://www.mp3upload.ca/music/view/83737

A friend that has always being there for me suggested that I air the song, that it might be the breakthrough.

Considering my situation, all the years gone, the humiliation, insults and above all, my mothers health, should I keep applying for jobs or go ahead with music?

Please I need your advice to be strong. I see every one here as my strength. Your advice means a lot to me right now.
Man mi,I tink God has shown u ur way for not gvin u job since so face ur musik u wil meet favour der.bilivvvvvvvvvvvvv

Thanks for your time.

i think you have a valid point
i never thought it all along that line ,how can a 2.1 be looking for job for 6 years and not even get a teaching job no matter how small , many construction companies will employ him with a 2.1

The problem is waiting to be called for employment...from tbe big firms. If nobody wants to hire you then volunteer to work for free......who doesn't want a free worker? It is a way of getting your foot in the door and proving your talent. Then you seek formal employment.Or... be self employed....by giving extra lessons to civil engineering students...or finding and teaming up with othra in your field.

Have you tried other things like studying for a masters? maybe it will improve your chances in the labour market. Best of luck!

Nigerian certificates are all thesame. God opens doors for people or didnt you hear that Phd holders applied as drivers in Dangote recruitment

Since you have identified something you're good why don't pursue it. Music is good and that may be where your destiny is. In the meantime you can start a business with very low start up capital and which provides you an avenue to reduce if not eliminate your mums medical bills. If you are interested, please contact

Omo I fell sori for you o! but this is the kind of society we have designed; try farming, me myself, I'm currently in the states, but I'm coming back home to start a farm. The easiest way to beat poverty is to produce a marketable good; farming is gold, I wonder why a lot of our young ones are not flocking into that area
