I have always maintained that people learn from our debates or arguments here, especially the theists vs atheist arguments. Jesuoul has become one of our favourite moderators whom we hold as a standard for other moderators. Everyone here seems to like her. But was Jesoul always like this?


Let's take a look at the evolution of Jesoul after many interactions with atheists.


The humble excessive christian beginnings (2007-2010)

Jesoul started posting topics, she wasnt really knowledgeable and tolerant with atheists. We can see this in one of her earliest topics where she was begging atheists to believe in hell with a scary youtube video and a quote from the bible! This was quite funny because ex-christian atheists will generally tell you that they can not fear hell since they have no belief in it or god.

Furthermore, Jesoul made a thread discussing "the problem with the atheist". This thread had a lot of fallacious arguments and was quite harsh on the atheists. First off, she claimed that atheists can not understand the bible because they are reading it without the holy spirit (lol ). In that same thread , sealso claimed that atheists make endless and abstract arguments that end in anger and strife.

Jesoul then started threads saying that atheists should have their own section because she was fed up with the atheists bashing God and that christians and muslims should be left alone. Along that line, she also made a thread saying that the religions section should be renamed to "bash christianity section" because she couldnt handle the criticisms on christianity.

One of Jesoul's worst threads was a thread on the Haiti Earthquake where she sounded a bit fundamentalist. On that thread, she went on to to talk about God's mercy in saving a couple from the earthquake disaster while ignoring the thousands of people that suffered in the earhtquake without God's mercy.

Jesoul's age of enlightenment and reason (2010-2011)
After some serious debate with Nairaland atheists and unbelievers, Jesoul started to question her religion. She raised topics asking some deep questions on christianity

Jesoul the intellectual and modern christian (2012 and beyond)
This year, Jesoul has been very tolerant of atheists with her respectful comments and questions on many threads. She is the kind of theist that doesnt resort to insults and abuse (*cough* Davidylan, ehem) when her faith is challenged.

Jesoul is one of the few christians that can talk about homosexuality in a mature manner with a mature opinion. This really highlights her evolution on certain issues.

JeSoul: I support the rights of individual states to decide for themselves. As long as the people vote and decide - not over-reaching Justices in courts making their own personal amendments to the constitution. In my own state of Mass, we were the first to legalize gay marriage in the country.

What do I personally think? I support Civil Unions - so they can enjoy the same societal 'rights' and 'priviledges' married heterosexual couples enjoy - insurance, healthcare etc etc. I am not for re-defining the term marriage, it should remain "a man and a woman". This gives them the rights they clamour for, while maintaining the integrity of a institution that has been in place since the stone-age.

Furthermore, let us compare her evolution on the issue of atheists criticizing religion;

In 2009 she said;

Unfortunately as I've found out, one man's 'bashing' is another man's 'freedom of speech'. It is not our job to muzzle speech just because you/we don't like what they're saying.

In summary, Jesoul has changed for the better. She is a christian that many atheists here do not have a problem with (unless she moves my threads to another section because of Toba).

no controversy here - you're 1000% right that I've definitely changed from when I first came to NL in 2007. Infact, I will go a step further and say I'm also ashamed of some of the things I used to believe in - because they weren't borne of study but rather the blind following of tradition & hearsay. There is no shame in "changing your mind" as you acquire more knowledge and listen to diverse viewpoints. This is how we all grow in life and become better human beings. One of my favorite quotes of all time goes:

"one can only learn when he gives up the illusion he already knows"

and if I were to tell of some of the things concerning faith, religion, christianity that I quietly question in my heart everyday you'd probably think I've crossed over to your side lol. But to me honestly, faith is not being stuck in a rigid set of beliefs - but rather being comfortable with asking questions that may challenge those beliefs - and then adjusting those beliefs accordingly. I am comfortable saying "I don't know" to certain questions and being content with it. And after all the ceremonial dust from various doctrines/beliefs settles, one thing will always remain true for me - that Jesus came and died for my sins, and I will try to live my life after the greatest commandment - to love God & to love you (my neighbor) as I love myself. Tongues, tithes, hell, trinity, sabbath etc etc all fade sharply into the background in light of that commandment.

Hey, we are all learning too. There are still things I learn about christianity from Nairaland.


However, I must say that I dont really have problems with skeptic christians who are christians but always question their faith. Such christians are very careful on how they represent their religion to others.

(Fundamentalists like Joagbaje and co get my blood boiling with the lies they spread)

I forgot one point - you said atheism caused it - not atheism per se, but some of my atheist friends here certainly affected how I view athiests in general. Atheism itself? nah, I have never doubted & will never doubt that God exists. That truth for me is non-negotiable .

Because I couldn't fathom why any tolerant xtian would keep banning me for airing a non-obnoxious view on the religious section, as if i'm a novice to the rules.
