Lazy and old cargoes teachers, shifting blame on corpers.90% of those teachers are due for retirement, going to classes with 1972 lesson note to teach pupils. Why won't they fail?

jamesbridget13: thats very correct, am a serving corp member now, studied mass communication n been asked 2 teach english, told d sch authority i cant take d oral aspect but they insisted i still handle d subject, i prefered social studies, crk or govt but i wasn't given. I ll like 2 point that most permanent staffs re not serious in d public schools.

Mass Communication can't teach English? Hmmmmm

This burtress what l said that studying Engineering does not mean the person should be able to teach further maths.

Not even those that studied mathematics can teach it effectively ... it takes those that studied maths education to be able to teach it effectively. it includes class room management and all that.

Enough said about corpers who can't teach. Me think d reason why corpers dat did not attend Univ. of Education are posted 2 schools is because 'there's not much space in d labour market where dey can serve'. Schools r now like a dumping ground 2 accomodate dem, afterall dey must serve Nigeria by force.
But what do u say about some private schools dat can't afford 2 pay qualified teachers & dey ll employ several corpers cos dey know dat dey r cheaper. Some of ds corpers r made 2 teach 2-3 subjects which dey r nt qualified 2 teach. Who's responsible 4 monitoring these schools? Dey exist Ikorodu Lg in Lagos & Ogijo, in Sagamu Ogun State.

Absolutely not all the corpers but without corpers some public schools would have been closed! I studied Electrical/Electronics Engineering so when i served i was suppose to teach mathematics, physic & others but rather i was given agriculture to teach from ss1 to ss3 & i did it very well couple with my secondary school experienc &notes, atlast the principal of the school was impressed.

As if corpers were absent when students were performing better in exams.
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by doyka: 10:30pm On Dec 11, 2012
That statement is baseless. The so called trained teachers that
Can't speak good english, or the ones that come to school twice
in a week. I wonder what will happen in some of these schools if
Corp members are not posted to them.
Can U imagine a school where a corper is the HOD Chemistry, or
the school I served, where I was asked to teach maths & physics
in SS1, SS2 & SS3 and the foolish principal was paying me N3500
monthly

CohenJane:

This is not true. In maths, we call this type of argument necessary but not sufficient. It may be necessary for an Engineer to know Further Maths, but not sufficient to teach it, they are two different things entirely.

The fact that you know something may not be a sufficient and neccessary ground for you to be able to teach it.

People that teaches further maths are those that studied Maths Education
yes,you are right.
I never thought of it that way.

I am studying electrical electronics engineering and if there is any EE engineer out there who can't teach further maths, his certificate should be seized n he should be sent back to school.
Maths is an extensive part of engineering, when i say maths i don't mean 2+2 but real further mathematics.
If at all he can't teach, it should be becos he has no teaching skill and not because he doesn't know or umderstand further maths.
teaching skills is what am talking about. even if an EE corper is told to teach further mathematics, as long as he lacks teaching skills its absolute rubbish.

I dont like it when pple generalize issues. i am so sure that u are an education graduate trying to hype urself while talking down on others. not so true
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by Nobody: 10:38pm On Dec 11, 2012
Secondary school educational system has collapsed and removing corp members will dissolve the system completely.

Agreed, there are some corp members that can't spell their name correctly but it will be suicidal to generalize on this.

Corp members not only teach the students, they also lecture the teachers.

But come to think of it, if corp membes are removed from secondary schools, where else will they be posted to?

Sometimes I wish I went Uni in Nigeria just so I could get involved with the NYSC programme

I've always fantasized about strapping two long canes to my back(ninja style) to unleash on students...

The same way I was destroyed in my single year at a Nigerian High School... grin grin

If a student's foundation in a particular subject is faulty, oh dear! Even a first class graduate in Education will need Chriss Angel's kind of magic to make that student an above average one.

That said, the Teacher Council should first look inwards. Filter and remove old cargos with their old school teaching methods, make teaching salaries/allowances attractive so as to attract qualified teachers with real passion and zeal for teaching both in Nigeria and diaspora.

Only then can our young ones be the best we want them to be. One cannot keep using same methods to get new results...

As for the Youth Corpers being the result of the mass failure? Not always true!

Dear teachers council,we (corpers) sincerely thank you for your efforts in sanitizing the system.we sef no even want teach for school either. Besides, you guys should remove the log in your eyes before asking your neighbour to remove the speck in her eyes-deal wth your teachers first before attacking corpers.85% of the NCE holders can't even speak correct english and most of them are soOooooo lazy

The Teachers council is not totally correct!some corp members r far better than some teachers in secondary schools.wait a minute!do these so called council executives supervise their teachers in public secondary schools periodically..these teachers are only active when d month is winding up...some corpers are naturally gifted teachers.A graduate in education is no better!I've seen a whole lot of them and my heart only sinks for my unborn kids!

Orisirisi, nonsense and ingredients. Abegi, make we hear word o,na our fault say NYSC force us go school?! They should quickly scrap the whole teaching parole sef. I studied microbiology, was told to teach biology but what i read is different from the curriculum of the students. I didnt attend college of education so how do u want me to teach. Am poor in teaching. Not everyone has the gift. Shikena
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by Nobody: 10:50pm On Dec 11, 2012
Well am on the fence on this...
For example, someone like me who has a degree in Applied geophysics to be told to teach economics or government or biology will likely results in failure for the students concerned. During my service last year, I taught mathematics, Physics and geography. Though my teaching skills are next to nil, i made considerable impact that the students and the teachers still call me today to say thanks. I hate teaching then but had grown to love it. Doing masters now for possible lecturing.

Some states have acute shortage of teachers...most schools in some have only one or two teachers. Who will teach the students? Baboons or Obasanjo?
Think of it, corpers 'sabi' past the so called teachers. I experienced this during service. REFORMS is what is needed.
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by Bj5all(m): 10:51pm On Dec 11, 2012
the fact that there are some corpers even among those the studied education that are not responsible at discharging their duties, that doesn't mean there ain't gud ones that skuls in the villages found indispensable even among those that didn't study any education relation discipline
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by olu4life(m): 10:52pm On Dec 11, 2012
and by the way, they will continue to fail in the north. Cos the students hardly understand english,na war for us wey no hear hausa. So what do we do than to just go to class for the sake of righteousness twice or thrice a week. Abeg make we they yarn the truth
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by Nobody: 10:57pm On Dec 11, 2012
This is absolute balderdash. I served in Niger state and I can categorically state that the hope of these students lie mainly on these corpers. So they want to say that corp members who are in contact with these students once in a week for just a year are the cause of mass failure in the schools? Lazy f00ls.
I would even want NYSC to stop posting graduates to schools maybe then we'll go back to what the year was supposed to be used for, gaining valuable experience.
Having said that, some graduates are heavy crap.
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by Nobody: 10:59pm On Dec 11, 2012
The truth is that some of these so called trained teacher are even more dull than corpers.i remembered the encounter i had with the principal of the school i was posted to when i did my youth service.immediately the old man learnt that i studied Geology,he was so excited and told me that he had looked for a Geography teacher for months now.i bursted into laughter and he became confused why i was laughing and when i was done he asked me why i was laughing.i told him that i was surprised he thought i could teach geography and he said ofcourse i could because two of them were almost the same(GEO-logy and GEO-graphy).and to shock him the more,i let him to know that i did not even take geography class for one day in secondary school let alone of in university.in a nutshell, not that i couldn't have handled it perfectly well but it would have been a case of a round peg in a square hole.most often than none, they have always assigned wrong subjects to the right candidates(corpers).
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by dominique(f): 11:02pm On Dec 11, 2012
The teachers council are looking for where to place the blame. How about the extremely lazy teachers who delibrately neglect their duties and place most of the responsiblity on inexperienced corpers? That's what I experienced in the school where I served. Me and the hod are supposed to sharing the ss1 class, he had shared the arms unevenly giving majority of the workoad. To my utter shock, the student of the classes he was taking came to complain to me that they were about 4 lessons behind and the note he was giving them was totally incomprehensile. Got to a stage I started taking all six arms. Eventually I rebelled and I stopped going to classes regularly and the eediot had to report me to the authorities without approachin me first. Soon after he starting avoiding me as if I get his time.
Most teachers in schools (both public and private) are quite negligent and passive and do nothing to motivate the students to learn. Some are even totally incompetent. You won't believe that some teachers in the north can't read talkless of speaking english. What are those ones supposed to impart to students?
Teachers council should flush out the lazy, incompetent unqualified teachers out of the system and employ competent qualified teachers and stop shifting blame abeg.

[quote author=nezpablo]Truth be said, only trainedw teachers shld teach in schools. However, mass failure is nt caused by corpers only bt by unqualified/lazy teachers. I thought english during my service year. I read mass comm and i impacted well. Those students still call me though we may nt see again. They call me coz they can't forget me. But, i inherited poor students who can barely write a composition, hardly speak correctly. If they fail,is it d fault of corpers? Or the teachers in d school? So d fault is nt corpers per se bt our education institution.[/quote.]. . . Did u just say mention the fact that u taught english?
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by Nwogbe: 11:11pm On Dec 11, 2012
whether u read edu or nt isnt d point. As someone that was given a university training and really pass through skul witout paying for ur grades u should be able and capable to teach in a sec skul. The issue is d half barked graduate dat our unis and polys turn out. I use to be one of d best teacher in ma skul when I served buh never read education thu.

hmmm copers no blame them at all. when I served in Bayelsa state, The Principal requested deliberately for 13 copers to serve in his school. This gave the Teachers who has various Businesses in Town time to go for their normal business only to show up on pay day and give the Principal some %. we practically ran the school. there were Teachers we donot know who shows up only on pay day.so how will the student pass .They did not like our set because we hated how they abandon all the work load to us.I read Economics in uni and they wanted me to teach Economics and C.R.K. which I refused. They said we were the most stubborn set ever posted in that school because we do not go to their staff meetings and we did not sit in their staff room for one day.so they should not shift blames on graduates that were trying their best to help embarassed
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by tpia1: 11:18pm On Dec 11, 2012
Teaching skills are sometimes innate.

I did not study education, but i have very good teaching skills, even if i do say so myself.

This is because i have a lot of enthusiasm for the subject, as long as its something i'm interested in, or have a knowledge of.

I hate for students to not have an insight into whatever i'm teaching them.

And thank God, i've had feedback as well which validates my opinion here.
Re: Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council by tpia1: 11:20pm On Dec 11, 2012
So, my point is, not having a degree in education doesnt necessarily mean someone wont be a good teacher, although of course its important in establishing some basic foundation in teaching.

I know overseas, you have to have training in education before you can teach.
