Most of the components of these locally made cars are still imported and how many vehicles can a Nigerian company like innoson manufacture annually to meet the demands of the MDA's? This is likely unrealistic for now rather government should first start by creating enabling policies and assisting with capital for the assembling companies to be more competitive and efficient before making pronouncements
Re: FG Bans Foreign Cars For Ministries, Departments And Agencies by armadeo(m): 12:04pm On Dec 21, 2012
solomon111: if the Nigerian market of these foreign car companies are threatened, they would be forced to come and invest in our power-sector to enable them manufacture in the country.
Afterall, the power-sector is already undergoing privatization.

Ridiculous suggestion. I"ll just power the plant and pass the cost to the consumer its not my place to provide power for ur country that's what's govts do.

Good initiative no doubt. i have always been advocating for this however i dont think it will work. I also dont think the retardeen is sincere.
The day i see him give up his fleet of presidential benz limousines/sedans of all kinds littering Aso grounds and replace them all to Innosuns and their kind, then i will take him serious.
he is the head, he should lead and woe betide anyone within government that does otherwise.

mosun_ade: Why are they not saying this policy is a ploy to enrich INNOSON, just like they shouted about the imported sugar policy, they said it was a ploy to enrich Dangote. Double standards. Now I know not to take some people serious anymore.
The truth is that every govt policy is targeted at enriching pple who can in turn enrich the economy. If govt enriches Innoson, surely, he would in turn employ many unemployed pple to work in his plant, and these ppke will in turn enrich their various families and the circle goes on. The more cars sold. Means more VAT and which in turns increases govt revenue. Do you know the multiplier effect of banning imported refined sugar in Nigeria? More people will go into production of raw materials like the cane, more will set up sugar processing plants and employ thousands, the graphic artists will be engaged to produce the packages, more paper millers will have to produce the small cattons for packaging of the processed sugar, more transporters will be engaged in transporting the sugar from the plants to the markets, the value chain is endless and the ripple effect is hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs. That is how to create economic boom and reduce unemployment. When Obj banned the importation of froozen poultry products and fruit juice, Nigerians criticised him, I ignorantly joined too. But today, Dansa, Chivita etc are all over the place producing and employing tens of thousands of Nigerians directly n indirectly. Same for poultry, infact my gfriend told me her mum's poultry is overwhelmed by the quantity of demand she has now and she had to engage more hands. This is how economy grows, not by creating 1500 jobs in INEC, 2000 in NNPC, etc

you want them to sap all overof our 4000MW finish?
Big industries do not rely on public power to produce, most of them before commencing operation do build a mini power station to take all their plants and machineries. Do you think that PHCN is what give Dangote and Ibeto and Larfage electricity? Even the refineries do ve their power station too.

Innoson is just a private Enterprenuer while Dangote is a GovernmentAgent he is either in Aso Rock or frolicking with some Governoers in Benin , lagos or Kano, he and Femi Otedola were OBJ's man just like Mike Adenuga was to IBB

Is presidential fleet part of MDA? Or u did not read the op and jumped to your conclusion cos your fellow retardeen name was mentioned.
Re: FG Bans Foreign Cars For Ministries, Departments And Agencies by faithin9ja: 6:18pm On Dec 21, 2012
What utter rubbish.

OBJ as military head of state forced all MDA then to buy Nigerian produced cars, hence PAN (Kaduna) and VWON (Badagry Expressway) could survive. The first sign of economic reality under IBB everybody including MDA's starting buying 'tokunbo' cars from Europe.

This is a stupid policy trying to manipulate a market. Why do Nigerian politicians always think they can change a market forces and we the gullible public always fall for it (just like the fuel-subsidy fiasco).

If it even works it will mean MDA's will be buying sub-standard vehicles at very high prices.

Those students of economics will remember the basic Adam Smith policy on comparitive advantage. Nigeria has no business in trying re-invent the wheel. We have no business trying to build and sell vehicles to ourselves.

Watch the chinese, they specialized on cheap simple manufactured products like toys, cheap radios, made millions of these things, made milions of dollars then started investing in motor vehicles including buying complete motor companies abroad. The chinese bought Rover from the UK for example.

Instead of fooling ourselves by 'assemblying vehicles in Nigeria like PAN and INNOSON why cant we specialise in making even just spark plugs which we will export around the world or better still tyres using the rubber from our plantations (if we have any plantations left).

Do the math; a company that makes 10 million spark plugs a year and INNOSON with their CKD buses - which company will make more money?

The real reason why it wont work while its a good idea. As long as Aso Rock is filled with imported cars for the use of the retardeen, asking MDAs to do the same is pure talk. That lies my argument and that is the basis of my first post dumb. The retardeen must learn to lead by example.

Series22: hilux is manufactured by Toyota, and Toyota has a plant in Nigeria. So therefore, any Hilux van manufacture in Nigeria is a made in Naija goods.
CONCLUSION: Hilux is a made in Nigeria car
Where is Hilux plant located in Naija?

samguru: This is one of the best policies i believe will drive massive job creation, there is nothing wrong with Innoson Motors,it can compete with Honda,Kia,Toyota,BMW,Mercedes Benz of this world only that our penchant for foreign vehicles will never reduce.
Take for example my brother ride this brand of Innoson car and it is working perfectly for more than a year he has been using it.These vehicles are configured and built in such a way to survive the rugged and tough Nigerian environment compare to the brands have mentioned above.
bob Izua motors bought innoson motor since 2009 and he is still using it till date. It is African pride

Very good move from the presidency/FGN.It would help solve employment issues and technology transfer. Atleast we have several Auto companies in Nigeria. we have Innosun Anambra,PAN kaduna,Anamco Enugu and Volks wagen Lagos. because alot of them were gradually fading away. With this they would revive them and employ more staff. Also the Toyota,Honda,Kia and Hyundai car manufacturers that refuse to base in Nigeria would be considering the need to compete by setting up plants in Nigeria.

At least this will encourage Toyota, Nissan, Honda and others to build assembly plants in Nigeria.
I'm surprised that our government still thinks pro- made in Nigeria.
