Family Section Debate by Tgirl4real(f): 4:32pm On Jan 31, 2013
A user suggested this topic : "Is it RIGHT or LEGAL for an adopted child and a child of the same parents to marry?"
for debate here. The topic was motivated by this thread : https://www.nairaland.com/1179222/whitney-houston-daughtergets-engaged-brother he came across recently.

And I think it wouldn't be a bad idea if we had a Family Section debate.

We can think up more topics as time goes on.

If you are interested or you think it's a good idea, kindly signify here.

Thanks.

Legal? According to which country's/state's constitution/law? Who are we to decide if it's legal? Or do you mean "legalize" (that's if it's not already legal)?

Tgirl4real: "Is it RIGHT or LEGAL for an adopted child and a child of the same parents to marry?"

Since I have the option to go with 'RIGHT' or 'LEGAL', if i decide to go with LEGAL, that's like having "is Same-$ex marraige in NewYork legal?" as a debate topic. That's no debate. It's a True/False question, so you might wanna edit the topic.

Actually, I see nothing wrong with it.

As long as the two concerned aren't biologically related, then anything goes jare.

One-for-all-and-all-for-one I say.

Re: Family Section Debate by EfemenaXY: 8:19pm On Jan 31, 2013
^^ Lol!

Shebi you know the ancient Egyptian Queens and Pharaohs married their siblings?

So it begs the question: Who really decides what's wrong and what's right? What's socially acceptable for one tribe may be an outright taboo for another tribe.

Lemme give you an example:

Traditional Eskimo / Innuit culture dictates that if a male visitor visits a home, the host is obliged to give the visitor a female member of his family (or sister, I think) to the visitor to sleep with...so as to keep him warm at night.

Now, you'll agree with me that this is a taboo for West African / Nigerian culture, abi?

So, this just goes to prove that our "understanding" of what's right or wrong is subjective. The only time it's definitely clear is if an act is committed against the other person (i.e abuse be it physical or emotional)

The bolded is not true, there are some parts of Nigeria that practice this thing you call a taboo. i think it's in Benue or Plateau. can't remember.

I really don't have any date in mind. I would prefer you indicate your interest and decide on a convenient date.

honeric01:

You may be correct...but note the keyword there, "some"...meaning this practise is not prevalent nor widely practised in Nigeria / West Africa. So it's safe to assume that it largely regarded as a taboo.

This brings me back to the point I was trying to make, that our understanding / definition of right / wrong or what's acceptable is largely dependant on societal values and is most definitely subjective.

The topic is not the type to generate strong opinions from either side - most will not support it so it will be a damp squib.

Pick something juicy like DK recommends.
