Hello all,

I am trying to get information of student visa processing for Canada. Specifically i want to know

1. How much and how long the medical exams cost and takes. Can one start the medicals before applying for visa or one needs to apply for visa first?

2. What is the best way to go about the police report? Directly myself or use an agent? How much does it cost?

3. Is IETLS necessary?

The person seeking Visa already have the admission letter and has paid half of the school fees. The admission is against September 2011.

Responses are highly appreciated.
Re: Travelling To Canada by Delta007(m): 3:04pm On Jan 17, 2011
You do not need IELTS for a study Visa. You cannot do medicals before applying for a study permit. Go to nigeria.gc.ca to get info on the requirements of a canadian study visa.
Police reports are gotten from the CID HQ in Alagbon. they need your fingerprints, so you need to be there in person.

gel03:

please i need suggestions from delta007 and debosky or anyone with suggestions. VERY URGENT PLEASE

i have a bachelors degree in business administration but graduated wit a 2.2 (2.97) cgpa and for this reason, getting a masters degree program there in canada is difficult. so far, i have applied to memorial university for masters in employment relations as i was told they require 50% from nigerians.

I'm not clear what 50% means - were you offered admission or did you mean to say 70 or 80%?

i also applied to university of lethbridge for a mgt as a second degree program with major in human resources(undergraduate with co-op) and now i wanna apply to george brown college(PG HUMAN RESOURCES with 4months co-op). i have just changed the application for uleth to a one year mgt certificate because i was told that if i complete d certificate program with a 3/4 gpa, i will be eligible to apply for an msc in mgt.instead of doing another undergraduate degree for about 2yrs, i felt 1yr certificate program and then proceed to the 1yr msc. What do you guyz think? please i need your candid advice.

To be honest, you need to be clear on what you want to study and the resources available to you. In general, I'd advise going to a university like Lethbridge over a college, but the co-op placement is an attractive factor in the college. You'd need to assess both programs to see which offers more of the content you are interested in.

With regards to the certificate to masters route, you need to decide whether you're looking at remaining in Canada or returning to Nigeria. If you want to remain in Canada, you might want to do some market research as to whether jobs in HR require masters degrees or not and choose a path accordingly. If undergrad degrees are more popular, I'd advise doing the mgt second degree instead.

To conclude, I'd recommend doing the mgt as a second degree, and then going for a masters if necessary. With the co-op experience included, I think this will give you an opportunity to gauge the employment market before deciding whether you require the masters degee or not.

This of course depends on how old/young you are, your available resources and your intentions - leaving or remaining in Canada.

You are right. The cost depends on the person you meet. Price ranges between N2000 and whatever the Lord lays in your heart. grin Goodluck!

It cost me 3500 naira when I did mine (depending on your bargaining power). when you get to Alagbon with your passport photograph and photocopy of your data page, don't talk to the touts outside bcs it will be more expensive. Just walk up to the finger print officers office. I have the card of the officer at the finger print office that did mine. Pop me an email on tosin_raphel@yahoo.co.uk if you need his cell phone number.

@ everybody, If i get a letter of recommendation from my high school principal, is it going to help?
Can i apply with N2m in the account bcs the school sent me a bill of just $5000 (although thats for one semester)
does anybody know how to contribute to this thread from a blackberry mobile device?
Thanks in advance and I wish everybody Good-luck. grin

^^ The court should be sufficient for age declaration - just make sure you state you were born in Akure when you go to do this.

How Do I Arrange Employment For Canada?

@Delta007 @ debosky
I am a newbie here and I raised the aboved-named topic as a new post but was banned thereafter, Maybe newbies are not allowed to raise topics here.

Wrt my qualification, I’m a Physics graduate (BSc. Industrial Physics-2nd class upper division), NIIT trained Network Administrator (via MCITP program), and Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist, MCTS (I am also planning to write one or more Microsoft Certification Exam before the end of January).

I understand that with my qualifications, I can work as Systems Administrator/Network Administrator/HelpDest support Technician/Computer operator etc - NOC 2281-B and NOC 2282

I had been self-employed for nearly 2years in IT, repairing computers, laptops, and other IT works for both individuals, companies and Banks on small scale contract level.
Traveling through education stuff would have been a better option but it requires high funds which is not readily available to me now.

Please any useful information will be appreciated. Thanks

Like I told you on the other thread, I doubt you'd get a job from Nigeria. Your best bet is to migrate as a student. Why not try applying for a Masters program first? Some post grad programs have funding and you never know, you may get the required funding for your education. Secondly, I think there's the commonwealth scholarship; I dunno much about it but maybe you can look into it. You may want to broaden your scope to include the US as well. Just my thoughts.

P.S. The bots Seun installed are full of bugs. I have been banned a number of times and I have never spammed this forum. So, do not take it personal. It's unfortunate that Seun does not seem be interested in fixing this problem.

@alikote
Alikote:

pls has any done the informational tec professional course in lambton college canada what is the prospect am intrested is a one yr programe

Yes there is Information Technology Professional for one year but it is a graduate certificate that is used to work or proceed for masters like PGD. Most graduates of the program Nigerians inclusive get jobs with Research in Motion those pple who design and create all dem softwares for Blackberry and some other reputable industries. I have their brochures etc and I contacted the Nigerian Graduates of the program via facebook. I think that is the / one of the most reputable program in the college.

There is also Information Technology and Web designing which is 2 years. The advantage of this is you can get 2 years work permit but its up to you.

I applied for the ITP too and I should be getting the decision soon. Yes the job prospects are good, that's one good deal with IT you dont need a masters degree almost immediately its about work experience and your practical hands on experience.

The program comes with a 13 weeks work experience or what peeps call internship or practicum

@gel 03
Are you planning on living in Canada after your masters?

If yes, then I second debosky, I think its better to do a second degree of 2 years that involves internship or work experience. I was in a rush for masters too at first but a very good second degree is better than a random masters degree. While you r doing the second degree then you can map out a structure by then you should have been used to the terrain. You might even get a very good job and postpone masters for later.

If No, then I dont think naija embraces certificates or PGDs when you would be competing with other candidates with 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree from foreign countries infact they would be wondering why u left naija for PGD. But a masters degree is the best bet for you for naija market. And work experience too matters in naija.

Getting into a masters degree in Canada with 2:2 is freaking hard, just pray Memorial University accepts you

@delta

Some colleges are good. All pple have to do is look for reputable courses that have been approved, accreditted, tested and proven to be qualitative and sought after. For example, Lambton College as a whole is not all that but the ITP programs has a lot of job prospects and its respected by even Microsoft and Google these are major players in the IT industry. Seneca college is good too likewise some institutes of technology. I know you love quality likewise me but when u dont get into the best, you improvise & get into the best program in a better inst so stop disliking colleges.

Adios!

I never said colleges were not good. They are for a different market segment. If an individual residing in Canada (a PR or Citizen - perhaps a new immigrant or high school grad), paying minimal fees, then it only makes sense to go do a program that can get him/her into the workforce and a college will do just that. It's advantageous as the individual does not rack up unnecessary debt/costs. However, an individual coming from Nigeria, paying higher international fees, higher cost of living, etc; assuming the person is not able to establish him/herself in Canada and has to relocate to Nigeria after the program, of what use is such a program in the Nigerian context?

@Delta, debosky, disguy, cuddlemii and Rare, am so happy that you guys are back to the forum after some period of break. you guys are veteran on this thread and you have done so much in proffering good answers to questions bothering ppl. please i will like you to advise me on this key step i want to take in my life. To start with i have an HND from yabatech wit an upper credit, and am presently working with a multinational company as a technician. with my qualification i tried searching for schools that i can do masters with even if it requires me doing additional courses to meet up the minimum requirements but i could not get any which left me the the only option of graduate certificate program. guys i want you to advise me on the prospect of this program and the possibility of doing masters after completion as well as the chance of getting job after the completion of the program.
I'll be expecting your responses.

@Charlie how are you coping with the cold weather in Manitoba, hope u're acclimatizing very well. wishing u all the best.
Re: Travelling To Canada by DisGuy: 2:32pm On Jan 24, 2011
@ pharmow
I no be veteran o, my advice is generic as I'm not an expert in anyway

I'd have advise you to search for postgraduate diploma instead of Post graduate certificate but I'm not too sure how it is in Canada BUT you should also go further by checking schools that accept the certificate for masters programme
you also have to consider the cost to cover both the PG and masters course afterwards

I hope others will be able to advise you better

what course did you study and what course are you interested in studying?
Re: Travelling To Canada by pharmow: 6:33pm On Jan 24, 2011
@ Disguy thanks for your prompt advise, i did microbiology and i intend doing biotechnology(because is related to what i studied) or environmental science (as i already have international certs in occupational health and safety).

disguy i still consider you as veteran cos u've contributed immensely to the forum.

@all please do you know of schools that accept post grad cert or dip for masters program in aforementioned courses. your responses will be appreciated

Why the hostility, "johnkent" just made a very good point. You don't just come here and expect people who make out time out of their busy schedule to feed you with information "hook line and sinker", in return for derogatory remarks from the likes of you. How on earth is the UK's immigration connected to the CIC. Moreover, just for reminders, this thread is about travelling to Canada, which obviously is boldly written on the title bar.

Just as an advice, spend less time listening to information from third parties. I believe you can make out time to peruse the information/news online, and come up with a thought challenging poser. Afterall, every information is just a click away.
