For the new oil-palm plantation entrants, your land preparation suppose to ready by now if not the earlier the better. Don't be deterred by delay in rainfall or prolonged dry season.
Do the booking for your seedlings now to avoid unnecessary rush and other things.
To my clients on this thread, please adhere strictly to the advice given...Play the GAME according to the RULES......

I have been hearing lots of people, talking about different types of Agricultural produce they can plant or would want to plant, But what i have not seen on these forum is for someone to really come out and tell us, all the stress, difficulties, ups and down he/she went through before setting up there plantation.

I want to start by saying i have managed to secure mine self 13 plots of land. Each plot is a 100 by 100 feet. i want to start up an oil palm plantation. I have been able to buy 1755 oil palm Nursery from NIFOR. My story goes like these.......

Each oil palm nursery cost 150 Naira
Loading of each oil palm Nursery inside the vehicle is 20 Naira each
I paid 50,000 to convey the goods from IMO state to Ibusa Delta state.

On getting to the farm, the vehicle could not get to ibusa on time, the vehicle got to ibusa around 9.30pm. So the vehicle had to park in the house for the night. The next morning the journey to the farm began around 6.30Am, on getting to the entrance of the farm, the vehicle could not go in, because of poor road network. The vehicle managed to drive in but as the vehicle drove in, some sticks punctured one tire. So we had to off load the hold oil palm nursery on the ground. So we hard to go hire a pick up van. The van owner charged us 6,000 to convey the nursery to a location closer to mine own farm because there are other people farm in front of mine farm. now after that, i had to call the Hausa boys to use there wheelbarrow to convey the nursery to the farm, they charged 24,000. na wa ohhhh

Now the next stage is for me to plant. My mum's brother did one of these Agricultural causes is school, so he is a professional when planting oil palms.

We used a spacing is 8.7feet. you heard me clear, 8.7 feet. while they where doing the measurement, you know when planting oil palm, you have to do pegging, some hard roots was sitting on the sport where he was suppose to plant the oil palm, there was so much roots on the ground, we called the Hausa people again, they charged me 30,000 to uproot all the hard roots. so work continued. As am specking now, they have finished planting the 1755 oil palms. They would be buying more 200 palms because its like the land is more bigger than with i was told.

While am putting these here is for the new people that wants to go into farming. People, if you must go into farming, you must have money..... The more you go into it, the more unforeseen issues comes, and if you don't have cash to solve the issue immediately, your work would be suspended.

Also it does not end in just planting, there are still lots of things to be done before the said three years when you would starting harvesting.

So far so good, i have don't lots of mistakes in setting up mine oil palm plantation. If i have read some post that advices one on NL about setting up Oil palm plantation, i would not have made these silly mistakes.

if you are setting up an oil palm plantation.

Never you buy expensive lands.
Buy from NIFOR in your State not from outside your state
Let there me good motor able rood, so the vehicle conveying the palms can go into your land direct.
Make sure there is know roots in the ground that would disturb when planting

I would update later when more things comes into mine head
You mentioned 8.7 feet. Are you talking of the depth or spacing? If you mean spacing, you got it very wrong. I studied agriculture too. For newbies, the actual spacing for palm plantation is 10m X 10m (intert & intra row spacing. Depth of planting could be about 10cm. Beware, before you make mistakes.

You "studied" have you got practical experience? Are you saying there is ONLY ONE way to go about it?

cheesy He said "he studied". Well experience is needed too.
From studies, experience, recommendations and professional views
8m x 8m
8m x 9m
9m x 9m (standard)
9m x 8m
Triangular or Straight method ( layout)
All in all engage professional in this aspect.
Any mistake now will jeopardize the aim of this agribusiness.

Folks, I am negotiating the purchase of about 5 hectres somewhere in Ogun state, I have gone to inspect and observed that the land is frought with wild Palm trees.

My question is, will they affect the hybrid that I plan to get from Nifor? Should i fell them or leave them? The villager advised that he could get someone to work on it, earn some money from them before mine begins to yield.

I need your informed opinions please?

You can leave any stand that is out of your mark prior to time yours will reach flowering stage. At least to gain while still tilling but don't be carried away.

9m x 9m is the most suitable spacing to allow good canopy and easy access with the use of farm machines, to prevent the leaves of one plant touching others and minimize the effects of shading.

Hello everyone, I want to appreciate everyone who contributed to this thread and will still contribute. Most especially the OP for birthing this thread. I am a graduate of Agricultural Engineering and with a strong passion for owning an oil palm plantation someday in the future. But my major challenge as I speak now is the major resources.....( Land and money), but the WILL is there....you know, where there is a will, there will certainly be a---------. Having said that, I have fone through this thread from page 1 to present. With respect of raising fund , I have been thinking of an Idea of going into palm oil business which involves buying the product during periods of glut supply and selling during scarce period. But the challenge is, I don't know what the returns will be like, if it is worth going into, also what is the shelf life of palm oil like, can it undergo rancidity after storing for long period ? How about the cost of warehousing? will the proceeds from this idea make economic sense from the cost-benefit-analysis. please anyone with suggestions in this line can help me, or better still help me to polish my idea. Thanks in anticipation.

I could notice you talked about mechanizing palm tree plantation to replace man work. I am from Ecuador, I currently have 70 hectares of african palm tree of different ages, the oldest has 5 years. I am also interested in eliminating hand work and only using machines to work in the plantation, I have only managed to get a machine to cut the weed around the palm tree instead of using people. But I noticed you said you have a machine for harvesting the palm tree, I still contract people to harvest the palm tree but I want to change that. If you could show me what kind of machinery you are implementing in your palm tree plantation I would appreciate it so much!

Hello house,

Honestly I don't know where to start or what to say exactly but first I'll commend the spirit of ''I CAN DO'' that most Nigerians possess that drives us to want to succeed against all odds despite the challenges and obstacles staring us in the eyes as a result of the inept govt we have that pay lip service to agriculture in the land where agriculture is our natural occupation before the advent of civilization and the coming of white slave masters to our shores.

Kudos to okine4real for creating this trend and the 1st group of guys that keeps the discussion alive with practical hand-on experience and attached photographs to rekindle our zeal, it has really lifted my spirit for I'm so happy leaning on the shoulders of you guys and tapping from your vast experience due to your contributions that sought to enlighten others from making the same mistake some of you encountered.

I literally went through the 17-pages trend in a go and it has broaden the little knowledge I have in farming especially Oil Palm farming. This is a great advantages of the internet and modern technology and I'd wish most of our jobless youth roaming the streets of our cities in their sagged trousers carrying phones that their worth is equivalent to acres of land in the villages would so much look up this page in the phones they're carrying around. This would have mopped up unemployment from our dear country and made us employer of work-force.

I've always being an avid supporter of agriculture and farming though in a large scale but Rome they said was not built in a day, I'm a civil engr by profession but has passion for farming and I intend to retire to it someday hence I'm planning to start with a little...we could start small and go big, Dangote starts from somewhere but most of our youths are contended working for 40k a month, that's if they were lucky to get such a job and it really sadden me.

But once again kudos to all commentators on the forum.....,okine4real, felixzo1, igbonla, mangam, chief consultant tjadeniyi.

On the final note, I'll really appreciate if anyone tell me where I can get say 30 hectares of land in readiness for my adventure into this money ritual farming and as expected where the price would be considerable ok for this sort of investment.

Thanks a bunch and I wish those who have already planted a bountiful harvest.

It my pleasure to be here and appreciate all here too. May God bless the OP: okine4real and other ogas in the house, this thread has been a blessing reference to some of us and through this thread I have visited many farms for on-the-spot assessments, advises, recommendations etc. I have gotten many calls. Many thanks to our people in the diasporas who are having their farm projects here in Nigeria, I appreciate your courage.
To be candid some people have interest in this agribusiness and have invested "biggerly" but they are missing it and wasting resources (I have seen a lot), all because "they are not playing the game according to the rules".
Please try to separate business from hubby, experiment/research, and also create a distinct line between business and family/friend. Let business be strictly business.
Thanks all.

@rex0105, pleasure is mine. I bet it you will thank your God and bless the day you read this thread if you follow and execute this your plan. But my brother consult well because any error at the beginning can jeopardize the aims and objectives.
Pertaining land acquisition, try interior/rural areas of states like Akwa-Ibom, Edo, Ondo, Osun etc.

@Gameorchard, to set up? How do you want it? List out your preparation.
